Teacher
Data scientist
Evangelist for human agency in ai
(you will know what that means by the end of this talk)
What is the world we envision when we think of artificial intelligence?
According to the WEF, the Ai revolution will usher in a new renaissance
Reduced work week
Basic income
Frees us to do creative jobs
Projects we are already working on today
– self driving cars
– UAV’s that process image data to predict pipeline leakages
- self-diagnosing machines
With this world of possibility comes a new ask of humanity.
We are still in early stages
“narrow ai” instead of “general ai”
Why should we care?
Runaway ai
Racist and sexist algorithms (show some headlines)
But what can we do? Facebook – Amazon – Google – Accenture … we hold the power, the resources, the development teams…
This is where I become a teacher. Social contract is everyone’s responsibility.
This same question was asked 70 years ago, in a completely different context.
We asked that question over 70 years ago.
Post wwii nazi trials
Wrote for the new Yorker
Eichmann in Jerusalem
Not my fault, I was just following orders - Banality of evil
When we say terms like ‘racist algorithm’ we erase human responsibility in our language
We anthropomorphize our AI when we need to shift the blame, but we treat it like a machine when we get benefits.
When we remove the human from the equation we create our own dystopian fears.
We need to improve data literacy for all people
We need to create standards and think about how to regulate AI
We need everyone to have access to the tools to build AI or learn more if they are interested
Social contract to enable the use of AI tools
Only with enabling these factors can we arrive at an AI future that’s bright and hopeful.
At Accenture, I work on regulation and helping the biggest clients in the world. What about the regular people, or those most at need
Emphasis on education and democratization.
“why does no one create AI to stop bombs from falling on our children?”
It is not JUST up to the facebooks and googles and amazons and accentures of the world…we cannot do it alone. It is up to all of us.
Our future is not determined. We are not headed to an AI dystopia or utopia. We are headed to the future we create for ourselves. What do you want that future to be?
Democratization – I encourage you to visit my website and sign up for office hours. Am now connected to Syrian refugees and able to make an impact on their lives. For some of the women, I’m the first woman phd they’ve ever met.
I hope to help you and learn from you as well.
