Training about Data Archive
You will learn:
What a data archive is, and its benefits for you
What a data archive with a ‘Data Seal of Approval’ entails.
How to put small, large and complex data in the data archive with two methods:
do it together
do it yourself (hands on session)

2. What will you learn today
• What a data archive is, and its benefits for
you
• What a data archive with a ‘Data Seal of
Approval’ entails.
• How to put small, large and complex data
in the data archive with two methods:
– do it together
– do it yourself (hands on session)
3. Data Archive
• Multi disciplinary, multi institutional
data archive to ‘freeze’ research data
and data descriptions for future use.
– improve long-term accessibility, usability
and discoverability.
• In the archive, we store completed,
valuable data sets from completed
technical-scientific studies.
4. Trusted archive
By storing your data sets in a trusted archive, you can be
assured that:
• No physical incident will occur. We use advanced backup
facilities
• That the data sets can easily be located and retrieved.
We allocate descriptive metadata that remains inextricably
linked to the data, according to international standards
• That the formats in which the data is stored will
remain legible. The software with which the data sets can
be read is described and stored with a link to the data sets
• That copyright will be protected. We do this by allocating
descriptive metadata. You determine whether and when to
make your data available to others.
5. Data Seal of Approval
The 16 Data Seal of Approval
guidelines are based on the
following five criteria:
1. The data can be found on the Internet
2. The data are accessible (clear rights and licences)
3. The data are in a usable format
4. The data are reliable
5. The data are identified in a unique and persistent
way so that they can be referred to

6. 16 guidelines
Data Producers:
Sufficient information
to assess the quality of
the data
Recommended formats
Repositories:
Technical infrastructure
Ensures integrity of
digital objects
Access and availability
Data consumers
Respects the licences
of the data repository
regarding the use of
data
7. Upload your data
2 ways to upload your data:
Do it yourself:
After registration you can upload your data yourself.
The data file must not be bigger than 4Gb.
Do it together (with us):
Everything but the selfupload
Eg:
Datasets with ‘unusual’ formats
Series of datasets
Datasets bigger than 4Gb
Here we do a lot of awareness
8. Do it yourself
Go to:

Upload your data

9. Do it yourself
Take the dataset you used for the data management plan
(or any dataset you wish to upload)
Notes de l'éditeur
3TU.Datacetnrum was initiated in 2007 by the libraries of the 3 technical universities of the Netherlands: TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and the University of Twente. The real start with datasets being ready for reuse was in 2010. The main goal is long-term access to research data.
The centre consists of three different parts: Data Archive, Data-labs and Services.
1. The data producer deposits the data in a data repository with sufficient information for others to assess the quality of the data and compliance with disciplinary and ethical norms.
2. The data producer provides the data in formats recommended by the data repository.
3. The data producer provides the data together with the metadata requested by the data repository.
Guidelines Related to Repositories:
4. The data repository has an explicit mission in the area of digital archiving and promulgates it.
5. The data repository uses due diligence to ensure compliance with legal regulations and contracts including, when applicable, regulations governing the protection of human subjects.
6. The data repository applies documented processes and procedures for managing data storage.
7. The data repository has a plan for long-term preservation of its digital assets.
8. Archiving takes place according to explicit work flows across the data life cycle.
9. The data repository assumes responsibility from the data producers for access and availability of the digital objects.
10. The data repository enables the users to discover and use the data and refer to them in a persistent way.
11. The data repository ensures the integrity of the digital objects and the metadata.
12. The data repository ensures the authenticity of the digital objects and the metadata.
13. The technical infrastructure explicitly supports the tasks and functions described in internationally accepted archival standards like OAIS.
Guidelines Related to Data Consumers:
14. The data consumer complies with access regulations set by the data repository.
15. The data consumer conforms to and agrees with any codes of conduct that are generally accepted in the relevant sector for the exchange and proper use of knowledge and information.
16. The data consumer respects the applicable licences of the data repository regarding the use of the data.
