Welcome to SATELLITE 2016: The Conduit of Innovation!
The most important week of the year for the world’s satellite-enabled marketplace has arrived, along with our
35th
anniversary. We’ve come a long way since our first show. Nothing illustrates that point better than the fact
that SATELLITE 2016 will host more speakers this week than the total attendance at our debut in 1981. As
your chairmen, it is our pleasure to welcome you and your colleagues, peers, and friends to the Gaylord National
Convention Center. All of us at Access Intelligence Aerospace Group, and other affiliates and partners are thankful that
you have joined us at SATELLITE 2016. We are committed to making your investment of time and energy one that will
keep you coming back, year after year.
As you tour the Gaylord National Convention Center, you will find enhanced new content, complemented with core
sessions that cover what top experts think and how they see the evolution of our growing slice of the international
telecoms pie. For those joining us for the very first time, successfully navigating the 60 full conference sessions, more
than 80,000 square feet of exhibition show floor space, and numerous networking opportunities at SATELLITE requires
careful planning. Fortunately, we’ve designed the program so that each of you can hit all of the highlights
relevant to your interests, your company, and your career. Everything you need — times, locations, rooms, and events
— is mapped out for you in this SATELLITE 2016 program guide. Additionally, Via Satellite’s Show Daily provides a
precise look at the day’s schedule, hot news and interviews, networking events, and a matrix of the participating
companies on the showroom floor.
The SATELLITE 2016 conference program provides you with opportunities to hear from and even ask questions of top
executives driving the satellite-enabled marketplace worldwide, starting with the CTO and CFO breakfast roundtable
sessions and ending with our Thursday morning general sessions. In addition to our annual Satellite Operator CEO
opening general session in the Potomac Ballroom, we have created two new open general sessions for our conference
attendees: the Satellite Manufacturers and Global Launch Services panels on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons
(respectively) in the Maryland Ballroom. We’ve also crafted a brand new International Forum covering an entire
day of content (Wednesday), expanding to 11 International Forum sessions, and added keynote speakers for both
the Finance Forum and the Government & Military Forum. Full conference registrants should plan to attend the 2016
Satellite Executive of the Year lunch sponsored by Boeing on Wednesday, as well as our traditional reception and party
that evening, sponsored by Arianespace, to recognize and celebrate our winner, Michel de Rosen of Eutelsat, up close
and personal.
Our massive Exhibit Hall of more than 300 participating companies (50 of which are joining us for the first time)
opens on Tuesday morning, following the Satellite Operator CEO opening general session. While you’re visiting the
exhibition floor, don’t forget to check out our Innovation Theater, presenting hands-on demonstrations of ground-
breaking satellite products and service offerings making their debut at SATELLITE! We’re delighted to tell you that we
continue to see growth in Exhibit Hall and conference registrations, making SATELLITE 2016 the most successful event
in our 35-year history. These next four days here with us at SATELLITE 2016 will equip you to lead your company
successfully this year and in the years ahead.
As for next year, we’ll see you back at the Washington D.C. Convention Center, March 6-9 for SATELLITE 2017!

Room: Woodrow Wilson B-D
Lower launch costs and faster manufacturing turnaround times
make for lower risks for satellite CEOs, but also provide more
freedom and flexibility for satellite CTOs to get creative and
ambitious with long-term technology plans. Combined with the
impact of high-speed, high-throughput satellite (HTS) services
coming online, the satellite community finds itself invested in the
development of a widening range of technologies, standards and
consumer devices. The Internet-of-Things (IoT), for example, will
require satellite to some degree in order to realize software and
hardware developers’ visions of a seamless connected device
network. Can satellite determine its own degree of involvement
by investing directly in IoT software and hardware development?
Can satellite take a leadership role in developing the standard
that ties the IoT world together? This is just one example of
an opportunity for satellite CTOs to expand their influence on
the larger connectivity ecosystem. CTOs from a wide range of
markets will explain how HTS rollouts, constellation proposals and
enterprise, government and consumer needs alter the course of
satellite technology evolution and require greater involvement in an
expanding realm of innovation.

Developments in the Adoption of Commercial
Hosted Payload and Smallsats for Government Use
Room: Baltimore 1-2
While hosted payloads and small satellites offer different trade-
offs, they both offer attributes mission planners are looking
for — mission flexibility, lowered costs, less risk, faster time to
orbit, reduced operational and technical complexity. So what is
stopping the government from utilizing such an available, efficient
and highly secure HoPS platform? Is it a traditional mindset or
an innovative mindset that is affecting the alignment of buying
and selling process? Is it a policymaker misalignment? Is it a
misalignment within the talented personals exploiting their core
business coming from both commercial and government sectors?

Securing Satellite Networks in an Age of
Cyber-Threats (Part 1)
			 Sponsored by
Room: Baltimore 3-5
For most of its history, the satellite industry has operated point-
to-point or point-to-multipoint networks that gave hackers little
scope for doing damage.A hacker or two may have been able to
override television programming out of anger at the introduction of
encryption, but such interference did not open the network itself
to invasion.Today’s satellite industry, however, provides links into
IP-based government, enterprise, maritime and other networks
that are squarely in the sights of black-hat hackers, and their
customers are insisting that satellite service providers take steps to
protect their own operations, as well as the customer, from harm.
In this presentation, experts in cybersecurity explain key network
vulnerabilities, the core practices for managing cyber risks, and the
unique issues facing networks that connect to satellite.

Disruptions and Opportunities: MilSatCom and
ComSatCom in Both Space and Ground Segments
			 Sponsored byRoom: Baltimore 1-2
In military satellite communication and commercial satellite
communication, disruptive innovation can come in many forms.
It can come in the form of a new ground segment and/or in the
form of a new space segment. It can also be in the form of a
new launching vehicle, product, technology, footprint of satellites,
material, or process that leads to a step change in performance
and/or efficiency. Is this the right time to shift focus from a
traditional business model, stop living a successful syndrome
and move more into an innovative mindset that requires a lot
of reinvention and some sort of revolution in satcom business
models? How to transform a traditional mindset to change into an
innovative mindset that is so disruptive? Is disruption providing
opportunities within the satellite core business models?

Satellite’s Response to Evolving Media Habits:
Streaming, Over-The-Top (OTT) and Bandwidth Demand
Room: Annapolis 1-4
Although consumers’ TV preferences and habits are changing
dramatically, satellite continues its effort to stay relevant in a
world that is embracing IP-based delivery.A 2015 ConsumerLab
report conducted by Ericsson finds that the popularity of linear TV
remains high, largely due to the popularity of live content such as
sports and events, and the reliability of satellite is highly attractive.
However, the industry wonders whether or not broadcasters agree
with consumers and whether or not satellite will be able to cater
to key consumer demands and stay competitive in an OTT world.
This panel aims to discuss the effects that OTT will have on future
satellite bandwidth demands from broadcasters, as a majority of
the long-term capacity contracts from the mid-2000s expire.

Securing Satellite Networks in an Age of Cyber-
Threats (Part 2)
			 Sponsored by
Room: Baltimore 3-5
The second part of our Cyber Security session continues the
discussion on identifying key network vulnerabilities but expands
on how satellite operators and providers are strengthening
defenses against growing cyber threats. Several satellite
organizations in our community have been making strides in
advancing a “culture of security,” establishing security guidelines
for operators and enterprises, and developing processes based

A Satellite Acquisition Model for the Modern Age:
Enabling Service Men and Women Anywhere, Anytime

Sponsored byRoom: Annapolis 1-4
The DoD has reached a turning point in satellite acquisition and
deployment from narrowband to wideband, as well as protected
SATCOM.As the budget forecast for the foreseeable future does
not cover the replacement or addition of systems other than those
for existing programs of record, U.S. commanders would find it
unthinkable to proceed into combat without the very latest, most
advanced satellite capabilities. Participants on this panel will offer
their perspectives and background on the current acquisition
model and insight on a more proactive approach to integrated
architecture where COMSATCOM is complementary and ensures
robust and globally accessible SATCOM delivered as a service.
A key focus will center on how “SATCOM as a Service” allows
for access on demand to satellite capability, end-to-end, to
include transponders, equipment terminals, backhaul, capacity
and features. With no infrastructure charges or RD investment
on their part, customers travel from one location to another, and
simply “plug in” to get what they need, when they need it.

Space Insurance Workshop: How Insurers Analyze
and Assess the Risks of New Technologies
Room: Baltimore 1-2
With the growth of new technologies and new applications in
space in the next five years, insurance and risk management
will play an increasingly important role as projects move from
technology demonstration to commercial operations. Insuring new
technologies and innovations will be a key element in financing,
implementation, and operation of future commercial space activity.
In addition, the next five years will see the retirement of most
current launch systems and implementation of a completely new
stable of launch vehicles. Risk management for complex systems
requires specialized knowledge and adequate capital. How will

Spectrum Threats Post WRC-15: Peace,
Security and Spectrum for All?

Many in the industry were concerned that the WRC-15 Conference
would be a watershed, by which the security of all satellite
spectrum would be at risk. But this was not the case, the satellite
industry succeeded in rallying the international community to
recognize and re-affirm the role of satellite and the need for
security of its spectrum. How did this play out? With current and
future terrestrial spectrum needs accounted for, and satellite
telecoms spectrum secure at least to WRC-2023, are we entering

With SATELLITE 2016 we mark a departure from the past and
recognize a future where the dividing lines between fixed satellite
services and mobile satellite services continue to diminish at a very
quick pace.Joining our traditional Big Four — the CEOs of Intelsat,
SES,Eutelsat, andTelesat — is the chief executive of Inmarsat. This
expansion reflects our promise to engage the entire global satellite-
enabled marketplace with perspectives and points of view across
the broad spectrum of space-based services and products. It’s not a
moment too soon.Significant and measurable downward pressure
on transponder pricing has precipitated new approaches by the
Big Five to existing as well as emerging markets. As the technology
infrastructure for satellite becomes even more robust and affordable,
terrestrial solutions and orbital alternatives nonetheless threaten
to carve out prime pockets of profitability while also expanding the
addressable marketplace worldwide.Blood may be spilled in the short
term, but satellite has always been defined by resiliency. How will HTS
change the equation? What shape will the future satellite-enabled
global marketplace take? How will established players such as the Big
Five morph into multi-faceted service providers that take advantage
of the long view and operational efficiencies to serve core and future
needs? What new services will use existing satellite capacity?Which
companies will be winners, and which will be losers?

The Promise and Perils of Ultra HD
Sponsored byRoom: Baltimore 3-5
Once a format in search of a market, Ultra HD is showing the
early signs of broader adoption. The first company to roll out Ultra
HD was not a broadcaster or satellite TV company, but Netflix.
DirecTV got into the game with the launch of UHD channels, and
companies from BBC and Canal+ to Echostar and Eutelsat are
conducting serious demonstration projects. SES CCO Ferdinand
Kayser told an audience at IBC 2015 that the company expects
there to be 220 UHD channels over Europe by 2025.The stakes
are high for the satellite industry because the adoption of Ultra
HD should drive greater demand for bandwidth in contribution,
distribution and satellite TV, though advances in compression
will inevitably limit how much bandwidth is really required. In
this panel, customers and service providers discuss what early
experience with trials and deployment is telling us about the future
of Ultra HD, what issues and challenges confront the market, and
what we can expect in the years ahead.

LEO and GEO HTS: A Complex Interplay or
Multi-Player Game?

Sponsored by
Room: Woodrow Wilson A
HTS capacity is rapidly becoming ubiquitous among the satellite
operator community as higher, focused bandwidth expands
revenue potential. GEO and MEO-HTS have both proven to be
successful, and the entrance of LEO-HTS players promises to
transform an industry used to speaking of Mbps into one where
Tbps are the norm.A key issue is now the precise balance
between classic FSS and HTS, which is more complex than
ever. This NSR session will focus on all HTR orbits, including
opportunities and challenges across this new space.Amidst a
potential avalanche of HTS capacity entering the market bringing
much lower pricing, and with a glut of FSS capacity in some
regions, this discussion is vital to all within the satellite industry.

Satellite, M2M and the Internet of Things (IoT)
			 Sponsored byRoom: Baltimore 1-2
The Internet of Things is expected to transform the interactions
of both consumers and businesses with a panoply of devices,
ranging from cars to refrigerators to electricity meters. Satellite
has played a major role in supporting connected devices in remote
areas for both consumers, via personal trackers, and businesses,
by monitoring heavy equipment, trucks and pipelines. How will the
surge in cellular connections impact the satellite M2M market?
Will new opportunities emerge for satellite, or will satellite be
swamped, just like satellite phones in the 1990s, by omnipresent
cellular connectivity? Will satellite M2M remain a small niche, or
can it expand into much larger markets such as vehicle safety?
This panel will discuss where new opportunities can be exploited
and what capabilities are needed to ensure that satellite plays a
major role in the emerging Internet of Things.

Occasional-Use in a Fully Networked World
Room: Baltimore 3-5 Sponsored by
Occasional-use has long been the high-wire act of the satellite
business.Whether for sports, news, events, disasters, military
incursion or corporate meeting, satellite has been the primary path
to get live video, voice and data where it needs to go, calling for
high flexibility, dexterity and performance from everyone involved.
In an increasingly networked world, however, that primary role is
changing. Opportunities for satellite contribution are eroding under
the pressure of terrestrial alternatives. The ubiquity of networks and
mobile devices means that satellite, where it remains primary, must
interface with a complex constellation of systems to deliver value to
customers.A fundamental shift in operations and business practice
is taking place, and this session brings together customers and
service providers to explore what occasional-use is becoming as we
transition to a fully-networked world.

The Satellite Imagery and Remote Sensing
Renaissance: Can DataSets Change the World?

Sponsored byRoom: Woodrow Wilson B-D
There is tremendous value in comprehensive data produced by
remote-sensing/imagery satellites — not just in a pure economic
sense, but also in its power to change the way the entire world
operates. From accurate weather forecasting models to unlimited
toolsets for civil engineers and city planners, remote sensing has
evolved into a satellite product with the potential to become one
of the world’s most critical resources of information. For example,
Planet Labs recently announced that they are releasing a beta
version of “Planet Platform,” an open-license HD satellite imagery
database of California that anyone can use for whatever purpose
they choose. What makes Planet Labs, their peers and their
investors so confident in the future of remote sensing that they’re
willing to give the world such a vast, free sample of comprehensive
data? Remote sensing enthusiasts from a variety of backgrounds
have come together for this session to share the answer, as well as
demonstrations of the latest tools being developed for tomorrow’s
businesses, schools, farms, research facilities and consumers.

From Voice to Dominant Data: Satellite
Mobile Backhaul
Room: Annapolis 1-4
Mobile operators in emerging markets are under increasing
pressure to extend their services in rural areas. Either these
markets are becoming more mature or governments are now
willing to bridge the digital divide and enforce Universal Service

Space Debris and Situational Awareness: The
Responsibility of Keeping Space Safe and Clean
Room: Annapolis 1-4
There are more than 20,000 pieces of debris larger than a softball
orbiting the Earth, traveling at speeds up to 17,500 mph, or, fast
enough for a relatively small piece of orbital debris to damage a
satellite or a spacecraft. There are currently more than 500,000
pieces of debris the size of a marble or larger in orbit, as well as
millions of pieces of debris that are so small they can’t be tracked.
Space Situatoinal Awareness (SSA) is an inherently international
and cooperative venture, requiring a network of globally distributed
sensors and data sharing between satellite owner operators
and sensor networks. Learn what accurate space situational
awareness looks like from studies conducted on satellite-tracking
measurements, using global networks of commercial sensors.
The data produced by these systems can provide health, status,
event and trending information of all tracked objects in orbit.
Join a discussion about the steps that the commercial satellite
industry can take to ensure that the space environment stays open
for business and doesn’t become so cluttered with debris that
obtaining insurance becomes a nightmare.

conventional wisdom on its head, making spacecraft a disposable
commodity. Are advances in smallsat technologies influencing larger
spacecraft, or passing them by? What about flexible payloads with
the ability to dynamically reallocate capacity in response to changes
in demand? Is this enough of a game changer to give the satellite
industry a competitive edge and drive new construction? How have
the HTS and electric propulsion bandwagons weathered to ups
and downs of an unpredictable marketplace? What have the major
satellite manufacturers heard from the big operators who continue
to struggle with a relentless spiral of declining revenues from
core services? Is there enough business in the pipeline or on the
horizon to sustain the current suppliers or create conditions for the
emergence of a new generation of satellite manufacturers?

Despite a new era of constrained budgets, government customers’
needs for mobility solutions continue to grow. Flexibility to make
use of either government or commercial capacity depending on
availability and application requirements is becoming increasingly
important across the aeronautical, maritime, and land segments,
and has driven innovation in terminals. What are the future military
requirements for mobility, especially in the post-drawdown
environment? What impact will these requirements have on the
business and technology plans of equipment manufacturers,

Ultra HD in Central South America — Are the
Economic Conditions in Place for Mainstream Adoption?
Room: Annapolis 3-4
For years, the discussion regarding HD and Ultra HD adoption
in new markets always centered on the dependence of a major
worldwide sporting event to drive consumer demand. Brazil’s
good fortune in landing both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the
2016 Summer Olympic Games brought some in the broadcast
community to the belief that the two events would speed up
the nation’s path to widespread take-up of Ultra HD services.
Economic conditions in Brazil, however, have changed since the
beginning of the decade and so, outlook on the region’s ability to
invest in entertainment technology also has to change... Or, does
it? This session sheds speculation and brings satellite industry
leaders from Brazil and South America together to discuss and
determine which economic conditions need to be present in order
for Ultra HD to see widespread success - beyond just the cost of a
television set. Our speakers will discuss everything from state of
infrastructure to quality and quantity of content and more!

Satellites for a Social Cause – Providing Connectivity
Cornerstones for New Economies Around the World

Sponsored byRoom: Woodrow Wilson A
The Internet accounted for more than 10 percent of GDP growth
from 1995-2009. However, many critical digital economy
applications remain underserved by terrestrial backbone
connectivity — this creates a digital divide becoming ever more
prescient with the advent of IoT and ubiquitous connectivity
demands. Mobile and fixed satellite operator networks have a
crucial role to play in unlocking the next wave of digital enabled
growth. In order to position satellite at the center of the story
in emerging markets, deep engagement with enterprise and
government end user communities is required. This session will
share best practices in emerging market engagement, as well
as thoughts on the industry’s need to dramatize how the modern
world already runs on satellite, and how much more central a role
satellite will play on a hyper-connected, data-hungry planet.

The most important week of the year for the world’s satellite-enabled marketplace has arrived, along with our 35th anniversary. We’ve come a long way since our first show. Nothing illustrates that point better than the fact that SATELLITE 2016 will host more speakers this week than the total attendance at our debut in 1981. As your chairmen, it is our pleasure to welcome you and your colleagues, peers, and friends to the Gaylord National Convention Center. All of us at Access Intelligence Aerospace Group, and other affiliates and partners are thankful that you have joined us at SATELLITE 2016. We are committed to making your investment of time and energy one that will keep you coming back, year after year. As you tour the Gaylord National Convention Center, you will find enhanced new content, complemented with core sessions that cover what top experts think and how they see the evolution of our growing slice of the international telecoms pie. For those joining us for the very first time, successfully navigating the 60 full conference sessions, more than 80,000 square feet of exhibition show floor space, and numerous networking opportunities at SATELLITE requires careful planning. Fortunately, we’ve designed the program so that each of you can hit all of the highlights relevant to your interests, your company, and your career. Everything you need — times, locations, rooms, and events — is mapped out for you in this SATELLITE 2016 program guide. Additionally, Via Satellite’s Show Daily provides a precise look at the day’s schedule, hot news and interviews, networking events, and a matrix of the participating companies on the showroom floor. The SATELLITE 2016 conference program provides you with opportunities to hear from and even ask questions of top executives driving the satellite-enabled marketplace worldwide, starting with the CTO and CFO breakfast roundtable sessions and ending with our Thursday morning general sessions. In addition to our annual Satellite Operator CEO opening general session in the Potomac Ballroom, we have created two new open general sessions for our conference attendees: the Satellite Manufacturers and Global Launch Services panels on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (respectively) in the Maryland Ballroom. We’ve also crafted a brand new International Forum covering an entire day of content (Wednesday), expanding to 11 International Forum sessions, and added keynote speakers for both the Finance Forum and the Government & Military Forum. Full conference registrants should plan to attend the 2016 Satellite Executive of the Year lunch sponsored by Boeing on Wednesday, as well as our traditional reception and party that evening, sponsored by Arianespace, to recognize and celebrate our winner, Michel de Rosen of Eutelsat, up close and personal. Our massive Exhibit Hall of more than 300 participating companies (50 of which are joining us for the first time) opens on Tuesday morning, following the Satellite Operator CEO opening general session. While you’re visiting the exhibition floor, don’t forget to check out our Innovation Theater, presenting hands-on demonstrations of ground- breaking satellite products and service offerings making their debut at SATELLITE! We’re delighted to tell you that we continue to see growth in Exhibit Hall and conference registrations, making SATELLITE 2016 the most successful event in our 35-year history. These next four days here with us at SATELLITE 2016 will equip you to lead your company successfully this year and in the years ahead. As for next year, we’ll see you back at the Washington D.C. Room: Potomac Ballroom With SATELLITE 2016 we mark a departure from the past and recognize a future where the dividing lines between fixed satellite services and mobile satellite services continue to diminish at a very quick pace.Joining our traditional Big Four — the CEOs of Intelsat, SES,Eutelsat, andTelesat — is the chief executive of Inmarsat. This expansion reflects our promise to engage the entire global satellite- enabled marketplace with perspectives and points of view across the broad spectrum of space-based services and products. It’s not a moment too soon.Significant and measurable downward pressure on transponder pricing has precipitated new approaches by the Big Five to existing as well as emerging markets. As the technology infrastructure for satellite becomes even more robust and affordable, terrestrial solutions and orbital alternatives nonetheless threaten to carve out prime pockets of profitability while also expanding the addressable marketplace worldwide.Blood may be spilled in the short term, but satellite has always been defined by resiliency. How will HTS change the equation? What shape will the future satellite-enabled global marketplace take? How will established players such as the Big Five morph into multi-faceted service providers that take advantage of the long view and operational efficiencies to serve core and future needs? What new services will use existing satellite capacity?Which companies will be winners, and which will be losers?
