This presentation was given to a sold out crowd at Salesforce UX Lecture Series in San Francisco. This is the second presentation of this and it changed a bit. The focus is how to take the next we must take to improve our social software we are using, particularly for organization within their own walls. The shift of from the social patterns of early adopters to mainstream is really a large shift and things are really difficult to do as we have only just begun the trek again (groupware and KM were the two prior attempts). Understanding how to look at things through different social lenses so to see what is going on is essential. This presentation is 6 or 7 of my 40+ (now just over 50) social lenses to help do this. This presentation is a high level view, but enough to see gaps and where things could and should change as we move forward.

Presentation given to Projekt Management Austria conference, PMA Focus, on 18th October 2012. <br /> Abstract: Social media offers us new ways of communicating and new ways of connecting with people. An important part of project management is effective communication, so at first glance social media should be able to help us deliver our projects. But is this really the case? Do the methods of social media, and the ethos behind it, really assist us in bringing in projects on time, on budget, at the required quality? Can tweets really help deliver a project? At first glance, the worlds of project management and social media would appear to be very far apart. The ethos of each can seem to be in direct opposition to the other, leading to strong questions as to how they can ever hope to be used together. For example, project management is traditionally formal and defined - it deals with the assignment of work, monitoring and control of that work, and rigid reporting routes. Social media, by contrast, is designed to allow conversations, information sharing, and collaboration with self-selecting groups. The truth is, while project management can have its formal structures, it is also at its heart about effective communication. In the past we have used strict methods of delivering this communication to ensure it is timely, accurate, and effective - but couldn't the tools of social media, which is all about communication - allow us to improve on this? This talk will look at the new possibilities provided by social media, and try to understand how, and if, they can be brought together with project management to provide effective tools. We will look at the different technologies that exist under the social media banner, such as blogs, Twitter, and business networking like LinkedIn, and try to define if they are really offering improvements to the way we currently work, or if they instead present revolutionary changes that require a wholesale re-evaluation of how we manage our projects. By the end of this talk, I hope to enable you to make sensible judgements about which social media tools you can start using right now to improve your project management, and to answer the important question: is social media really delivering what project management needs?

Developed for the Australian Computer Society's Education Across the Nation series - First quarter, 2012 Social media is firmly entrenched in our society, both in our professional and personal lives. The way we communicate with each other has changed because of these tools. Understanding what content to share and how the information flows through your network is a critical step in addressing privacy concerns. Old privacy concerns are no longer valid and you may be unintentionally exposing yourself, your family and friends. This presentation is designed to provide information and frank discussion about the privacy issues surrounding social media. In addition, recommendations for corporate social media policies and the role of IT in social media will be addressed.

Project management does not exist in a vacuum. We have embraced the various new methods of communication to encourage better collaboration and team-work. It is now practically inconceivable for a project not to be using email, tele-conferences, even video-conferencing to maintain contact with the participants. But are we embracing the new technologies available now? Are we making best use of the tools we now have? With project teams becoming even more spread out over the globe, are we making best use of our new communication methods?

Who would have thought that the Prime Minister and inventor of the internet would be interested in that spreadsheet on your computer? More than just a hot topic, recent legislative and government initiatives such as data.gov.uk and INSPIRE have made it a reality for organisations to exchange data in an open manner. But do you know what it really means, how it affects you and what you can do to easily unlock and exploit the benefits? There’s so much data out there, stored in various ways: enterprise databases, spreadsheets, word documents, pdfs, access databases or even floating around in a text file on some obscure corporate network – it’s all data. With all this inconsistency, data can’t even be found let alone be used to the benefit of the taxpayer. Sharing data between organisations is a major challenge. And the challenge doesn’t stop at the inter-organisational level. The benefits of true Open Data are great; Eliminating the barriers and pain of data sharing and publication means a more informed general public; Access without restriction and a standard methodology that removes the technological challenges of sharing and re-using the data. Geospatial data has to be part of Open Data because everything happens at a place, whether that be a house, post code, county or country. We often see Geospatial data as special, but the reality is it’s just data and should be Open Data where it can be linked with other information such as Finance or Logistics to provide the complete picture.

As social media tools like Twitter and Facebook become core components of nonprofit communication strategies, there is a corresponding need to assess how well programmatic messaging and organizational identity are propagating in those channels: "We Tweet; is anybody listening?" In addition, nonprofits have an increasing need to know on what blogs, websites and other online venues they and their issues are being mentioned and discussed, both favorably and less favorably. This webinar will show you how to create a listening dashboard for your or your organization's use. I will also provide an introduction for social media goal-setting and a template for tracking your social media engagement.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
