Introduction
Case study 1 carried out at a bottling plant showed there were
still many inconsistences in the master data even after the 9500
line items underwent a cleansing exercise by an external
consultant.
Every storeroom has many types of gaskets and seals for
different applications.
Case study 4 deals with one type of material, – Spiral Wound
Gaskets, used for sealing pipe flanges containing high pressure
fluids and gases.

Initial Review Spiral Wound Gaskets
After multiple searches, 119
Spiral Wound Gaskets were
identified
Only 6 gaskets had been
catalogued in the correct format
ie: NOUN, MODIFIER.
This extract shows that many
gaskets didn’t even have a Noun,
never mind the Modifier.

Cataloquing
The list on the previous slide highlights what we regularly find
during our inventory audits
The short descriptions provided by vendors are frequently of a
very poor quality and these same descriptions are then used to
create the spare descriptions in the inventory module
In our training workshop we discuss 10 rules for better
treatment of vendor data categorised into

Critical Review

Spiral Wound Gaskets – “Before” and
“After Data Cleansing”
This slide shows
the affect of
standardising
descriptions. Note
how it is now
much easier to
find the required
spare.
A complete
description should
include
information of the
material

Other Pitfalls
In the review carried out at this site, Spiral Wound Gaskets had
been bought from 5 different manufacturers.
Different manufacturers use different formats to specify the
pressure, see next slide
3/4/600 # ASME
3-4-600 ASME

Avoid Multiple OPMs
In this company, where we conducted the rationalisation study,
there were 5 different manufacturers for spiral wound gaskets.
This lead to duplicates items:
Flexitallic
James Walker
Lamons
Garlock
Cefilac

Summary 60% Reduction in Line Items
Initial Findings - 119 Spiral Wound Gaskets
Multiple searches to identify all the gaskets
Stock existed, while POs for same material existed for the
duplicate bin
18 Gaskets supplied by OEMs i.e. Solar, Fisher Controls,
Union Pumps
Standardisation of norms developed after discussions with
engineering
Action & Benefit 60% Reduction in line items through:
Removing Duplicates
Combining SS304 & 316
Standardising on suppliers

Need Help?
This analysis was achieved by standardising gasket
requirements and physically reviewing gaskets in the warehouse
There were some gaskets provided by OEMs that had nil stock,
therefore, it was impossible to gather all the required
specification
Ramsoft (UK) with the cooperation of your warehouse team can
carry out audits and cleansing.
