STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I love teaching adults in a higher education setting to help them achieve their learning
and career goals. I strive to be enthusiastic, approachable, and responsive toward my
students. I have seen firsthand that an instructor's energy and excitement has a positive
effect on the attitudes and interests of their students. I believe in continuously learning
and improving as an instructor and facilitator. The feedback I receive from my students
contributes to my advancement as an instructor. I am a firm believer in the Chinese
Proverb of “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you
feed him for a lifetime” and actively incorporate this concept into my teaching
Philosophy.
I provide prompt, personalized feedback and address student concerns in a caring
manner. I measure online success for an instructor by the successfulness of the
students. Having experience as an online student, I know what I expect from an online
course, and I strive to fill these expectations for my students. Three characteristics that I
find to be the most important in having a successful course are 1) a high level of
instructor involvement, 2) quick response time to the students, and 3) clear course
guidelines. I make it a policy to be present in my on-line classroom daily. Actively
involved in class discussions, I post probing questions to promote critical thinking. If a
student is struggling, I reach out and try to help them successfully complete the course.

2. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Theology Instructor 2013
University of Mary; Tempe, AZ
 Taught Theology 110: Introduction to the Bible. Introduced students to the elements
of a biblical worldview in the Catholic tradition. Topics covered include: Beyond Sola
Scriptura, the role of the faith community (Church) in understanding sacred scripture,
the importance and limitations of the historical-critical method in biblical exegesis,
the relationship between Christ as the Word of God and the Bible as the Word of
God.
Philosophy and English Instructor 2011 – 2013
Collins College; Phoenix, AZ
 Taught Philosophy 405-406: Ethics Presented students with an historical overview of
ethical thought beginning with Ancient Greece (Plato and Aristotle), moving through
modern deontological (Kantian) ethical thought to utilitarianism and its discontents
including postmodern and existentialist considerations of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche,
Sartre and Levinas.
 Taught English 101: Composition. Outlined the importance of clarity and structure in
writing, including the role of the thesis statement, the parts of an essay (introduction,
body, and conclusion) as well as the role of research, prewriting and outlining.
 Taught English 102: Argumentation. Explored advanced writing technique including
the importance of purpose, audience and tone as well as the three aspects of
persuasion and rhetoric, logos, ethos and pathos and how to use each effectively.
Philosophy Instructor 2011 – 2012
Estrella Mountain Community College; Avondale, AZ
 Taught Philosophy 101: Introduction to Philosophy. Laid out an historical overview
of the changing nature of philosophical inquiry from Plato to Sartre. Placed
particular emphasis on the connection/disconnection between thought and reality
with an aim to explore key philosophical problems including truth and perspective,
the mind/body problem, determinism and free will as well as the problem of God.
 Taught Philosophy 105: Ethics. Emphasized the continued importance of virtue
ethics even in a modern/postmodern environment. The connection between
metaphysics and ethics in a contemporary context is greatly questioned, but
impossible to ignore. Challenged my students to understand the Ancient Greek
understanding of “living well/eudiamonia” as still central to understanding human life
as a moral one.
