A. COMMUNICATION
2. e.g. clear, effective speech In my role I was able to engage with
a wide range of people – from junior
placement staff like myself,
experienced work colleagues and
Clinicians across a number of
medical professions.
Firstly - my time in the work place
has improved my confidence in
communication. I was required to
contact clinicians by phone in a
professional way. I learned to
address medical consultants and
secretaries to gather information,
seek clarifications and request
documentation, whilst explaining my
requirements clearly, deadlines for
completion, and the need for them to
assist me.
On occasion I would need to write,
requesting information using
department standard formats.
I learned to complete my tasks
efficiently, noted by additional work
being assigned to me, throughput
and accuracy of my work.
As I became more knowledgeable in
the tasks, I was became very
comfortable in guiding the junior
doctors through completion of their
application.
David established himself quickly,
learned his responsibilities and was
able to be an effective member of
the team quickly.
He has a great manner, and is
engaging and personable with the
people he contacted and worked
with.
He demonstrated his ability to
communicate well – training team
colleagues, and explaining the
necessary processes to junior
doctors .

B. WORKING WITH OTHERS
e.g. co-operating
- getting on with people About 2 months into my employment
our team gained a new member. I
was given the task of supervising the
employee, training and supporting
them.
My colleagues came from a variety of
backgrounds and ages, I was able to
work in various teams under a
number of supervisors, with each
team change adding some new
learning, often coached by other
team members.
As work backlog occasionally
increased – there would be a need to
work together to share and help
complete work with deadlines. This
needed collaboration between the
team with different knowledge.
I believe I was a popular team
member, accepted within the team.
David was placed in a team that
were responsible for the
anaesthetic - specialising junior
doctors. He worked well within the
team, both asking for help and
offering out his help.
David was able to complete work
without supervision and appeared
confident throughout his final month
working at Lead Employer.

C. IMPROVING OWN PERFORMANCE
e.g. enthusiasm, commitment After finding my feet in the workplace
and getting comfortable with the
tasks I was given, I was able to ask
for more work, broadening my
responsibilities and experience.
I had no experience of NHS,
payment procedures and
administration at this level, but was
able to gain an understanding of the
context of the work.
Throughout my placement I
maintained excellent timekeeping
and attendance and did additional
hours when asked, including
weekend work. I felt it was important
to dress appropriately and work
business casual clothes to maintain a
professional image.
Working to expected performance
targets I was required to manage my
time, and make appointments to
align with the availability of the
clinicians I needed to speak to.
David managed his workload and
kept his leader informed when he
had spare capacity.
When addressing the junior doctors
he showed a good level of maturity
and professionalism.
David was punctual, supported us
with overtime when asked to meet
the deadlines. He maintained a
good level of organisation and focus
in the workplace.

D. PROBLEM SOLVING
e.g The nature of the work was
procedural, but for many reasons,
each case presented its own
challenges – in terms of missing
information, language barriers,
scheduling and prioritising.
For example – understanding how
long certain information would take to
collect, meant initiating work, then
planning next steps later in a week.
Where certain information was not
available – it was sometimes
necessary to research other ways of
verifying identification. It was
necessary to analyse and spot gaps
in employment history that could be
barriers to employment.
Often around a deadline David
would make sure he was
prioritising tasks before starting
work.
He was able to complete some of
the more complex cases, and used
initiative to gather the necessary
information and records.

E. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
6. e.g I became very experienced in the use
of Microsoft products and the use of
company business applications.
Skills such as document
management, attachments, copying
and pasting information were part of
everyday work.
I had to use spreadsheets, and
learned about formula features,
formatting, printing and analysis. I
had to write letters using Word.
David showed that he was already
well experienced in the use of
various software. His tasks
required lots of use of Microsoft
Excel and Microsoft Word. He was
competent on business systems,
learning quickly.

F. APPLICATION OF NUMBERS
e.g
- calculating / evaluating Data management was a key part of
my responsibilities. I was able to
collate and analyse data in
spreadsheets.
The processes required verification of
numerical information such as
salaries.
The core business systems required
capture of data to indicate the validity
and completeness of employment
materials.
I have always been comfortable with
numerical analysis.

G. WORKING PRACTICE I was taken through induction and
orientation when I joined, ensuring I
was able to work safely in the
building, with awareness of the
necessary safety procedures. I was
required to follow strict NHS
regulations for data security and
confidentiality, which required me to
encrypt emails.
Clearly – confidentiality was
imperative – given the nature of
personal information I was handling.
It was my first experience in a large
office setting – and an interesting
insight into the responsibilities of the
individual and company to ensure a
safe and efficient workplace.
I also came to understand the NHS
employment processes very well.
David understood his
responsibilities and the obligations
on him.
He settled in well and adapted well
to the workplace.

maintained.
My Chemistry and laboratory
experience worked very well for me –
as I understood the need to follow the
detail steps and controls associated
with the work.
I learned a good telephone manner,
was able to perform the necessary
computer activity and document
handling and storage.
David showed that he was

(iii) Quality of work

10. - reliability of service The role was all about detail –
gathering multiple data sources
together to create a single profile.
To support accuracy and quality, I
made document templates, which I re-
used to ensure was consistent quality
in my work.
This helped my efficiency, service,
and efficiency when working under
pressure.
David showed a good level of
reliability. The emails that he sent
out always looked professional and
contained all the details required
e.g. how to contact for further help.
There were a lot of deadlines that
David had to meet and I feel as
though he handled them well.
I believe that he worked efficiently
within his team and worked well
under pressure.

H. PROFESSIONAL / ORGANISATIONAL
AWARENESS
e.g general presentation The company was responsible for the
employment of junior doctors and dentist
for the NHS for multiple host trusts. It
provided a central service to apply NHS
standards of verification to candidates,
and gathered the necessary evidence to
safely employ and pay. The company had
expanded in recent years as the local
health service changes shape.
For the various stakeholders – it was
important that I was trustworthy, and
maintained high standards of
confidentiality throughout.
I was able to gain some understanding of
personal issues as a direct consequence
of the work activity – but also got an
insight into the structure and management
of a large pool of temporary and
permanent staff, working on a ‘bank’,
providing a flexible workforce to meet
somewhat seasonal demand.
David showed that he understood how
the company works and the need for
confidentiality and professionalism.

COMMENTS / PROPOSALS:
Briefly reflect upon the
assessment, including ideas to
improve your employability skills
I enjoyed the work experience,
and did gain some thoughts on
the nature of work environment I
would and would not enjoy in the
future.
I felt it was very important to be
punctual, polite, well presented
and to be as efficient and
accurate as possible.
When in doubt – I felt it was good
to ask early, rather than waste
time in a wrong direction.
I also determined it essential to
engage with colleagues and
support a friendly and
collaborative working
environment.
I have been invited to work with
Suzanne again in any spare time
I have in the coming months.
