Treatment and focus group lesson
1. AUDIENCE INPUT
Lesson objective
• To identify the next step for your music video, based on the needs
of your research and planning.
Starter
• Do you know what song you are going to do? No? Go and create
a small poll (look online for options) and put the choices you have,
based on the interests and needs which you audience outlined.
Everyone in the class will complete it. Upload the results to your
blog saying you conducted a poll as there were many options.
• You do know what song you’re doing? Well done! Go and print the
lyrics and (individually) annotate them with your initial ideas.
2. LESSON OUTCOMES
Grade Outcome
C All will identify areas that need further
exploration by a focus group (poll and focus
group).
B Most will identify five solid questions (for focus
group) which will allow their focus group to help
to develop your initial ideas for your video.
A Some will schedule and arrange your focus
group. You may use other members of the class
but they cannot be in your group.
A* Few will write a draft treatment for your music
video.
3. EXAMPLE LYRICS
Everyone
stood side by
side with their
mothers.
Everyone sat on
the hood of Ellie’s
car. Yaaseen
filmed driving,
winks at camera.
Shannon blows
a kiss after
applying
lipstick, in the
mirror.
Fern is seen in the background of
every shot, picking up litter,
dusting and generally making
things tidy.
Fatima looks into
camera and
points both
fingers at the
camera.
Kayleigh
twerking like
Miley Cyrus,
whilst wagging
her finger in a
‘no’ gesture .
Everyone in a line, Amy walks
the line as camera goes down
the line with everyone starts
whispering and pointing.
Amy grabs camera, pushes her
face in with a ‘I know I look
good’ expression.
4. EXAMPLE TREATMENT
What is a treatment? Read my example
and try to establish what is it!
Can you suggest some alterations I
might choose to make to my music
video and suggest WHY I should make
them?
5. TREATMENT
A treatment is a document which summarises;
• The overall idea, narrative or concept for the music
video.
• The resources that will be needed to create the music
video.
• The justification for the ideas (which come from your
target audience, genre and artist research etc...)
6. TREATMENT AND
FOCUS GROUP
Lesson objective
To schedule a meeting with a focus group of students from your
target audience.
Starter
• On your pieces of paper, dedicate different parts to the results
of your questionnaire that relate to the psychographic
information from your audience.
• All results which need to be built on should be on the paper.
7. LESSON OUTCOMES
Grade Outcome
C All will identify areas that need further exploration by a focus
group.
B Most will identify five solid questions which will allow their
focus group to help to develop your initial ideas for your
video.
A Some will schedule and arrange your focus group. You may
use other members of the group but they cannot be in your
group.
A* Few will write a draft treatment for your music video.
8. QUESTIONS FOR
YOUR FOCUS GROUP
Good questions to ask are things such as:
• Here is our idea (tell them about it), what do you think
about it? What could be improved?
• What locations do you think would be good to film in for our
song?
• What images / storyline do you imagine for our song
choice?
• What are your favourite music videos and why?
• Is there anything you hate in particular music videos and
why?
Do not all use these questions – they are only
examples. Think of the issues in your head
that a focus group could help you to flesh out.
9. DRAFT TREATMENT
Lesson objective
To construct a draft treatment for your music video, summarising
initial ideas from your focus group and questionnaire.
Starter
On white boards, bring together some conclusions about your
music videos construction.
• Target audience
• Content
• Narrative / concept / themes
• Technical aspects
10. BLOG UPDATE
As INDIVIDUALS you need to upload it to your blog
afterwards summing up:
• What you have learned from your focus group;
• How you will apply this to your music video production
etc.
11. DRAFT TREATMENT
A treatment summarises your intentions for your music video. It
is good to establish a draft of ideas following your focus group
work.
You will then return to a smaller focus group and tell them your idea,
having taken on board their ideas.
You may just take sound bites or quotations about the idea from
people from the focus group. You may use a website like padlet.com
to create a feedback wall?
