1. The Bill of Rights Using this lesson, the student will be able to… Describe the Bill of Rights and how it protects the people. Identify the main purpose of each of the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution.

2. 1st Amendment Freedom of Religion Freedom of Speech Freedom of the Press Freedom of Assembly Right to Petition

3. 2nd Amendment “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed”

4. 4th Amendment Protects against illegal search and seizure without a warrant.

5. 3rd Amendment No soldiers shall be quartered in any home without the consent of the owner, not even during war.

6. 5th Amendment No one can be accused of a capital or infamous crime without a Grand Jury Indictment. No one can be forced to testify in his or her own trial. Everyone is entitled to due process of law No one can be tried twice for the same crime.

7. 6th Amendment Everyone is entitled to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of their peers.

8. 7th Amendment In Civil cases, if the amount in question is $20 or more, a person has the right to a trial.

9. 8th Amendment Protects against cruel and unusual punishment, and against excessive fines or bail

10. 9th Amendment The rights of the people are not limited to just those named in the Constitution

11. 10th Amendment Any power not specifically given to the Federal government by the Constitution and reserved for the States
