THE INDIAN ARMY
INTRODUCTION-:
 Established by Britain, it is the second largest standing army
in the world, with 1,237,117 active troops and 990,960 reserve
troops .It was established in 1st April 1895.Earlier it was known
as British Indian Army. After independence it was known as
Indian Army.
Chief of Army Staff-:
 The current chief of Indian Army is
General Bipin Rawat .He is the 27th Chief
of Army Staff of Indian Army.
 He assumed office on 31st December
2016 after retirement of General Dalbir
Singh Suhag.
Strength-:
 Total strength of indian army consists of 1,237,117 active
personnel & 990,960 reserve personnel.It has 136
aircraft.
 PARA SPECIAL FORCES is the special operations unit
of the indian army.
ARMY COMMANDS IN INDIA-:
 The army operates six operational commands and one
training command.Army headquarter is located in
New Delhi.
 Central Command:-(Headquarters at Lucknow)
 Eastern Command:-(Headquarters at Kolkata)
 Northern Command:-(Headquarters at Udhampur)
 Southern Command:-(Headquarters at Pune)
 South Western Command:-(Headquarters at Jaipur)
 Western Command:-(Headquarters at Chandigarh)
 Army Training Command:-(Headquarters at Shimla)
Weapon systems of the Indian Army:-
 Primary small arms of Indian Army is INSAS
rifel.Which has been succesfully inducted by indian
army since 1997.
Tanks and Armoured vehicles:-
Indian Army have 4312 tanks & 6000+ armoured
vehicles
 Arjun tank,T-72,T-90
 BMP,APC
Artillery:-
Indian Army have 4612 artillery.
 Howitzer,Field gun,
 Selfpropelled artillery,Multiple rocket launcher
Missels;-
 Ballistic Missels-
Prithvi series,AGNI series

 Helicopters-

ARMY DAY:-
 In India, 15th January is celebrated as Army Day.Army
Day marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who
sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its
citizens.It is celebrated at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India
Gate and at all army HQs annually.
Major Conflicts:-
 Indian Army has been involved in many wars.Indian
Army fought 3 wars with pakistan which are 1965 indo-
pakistani war,1971 Bangladesh liberation war,1999
kargil war.Indian Army also involved in a war with
China 1962 sino-indian war.
THE INDIAN NAVY
INTRODUCTION:-
 Established by Britain,it is the world’s fifth largest
navy.It presently operates over 110 vessels,including
one aircraft carrier.Earlier it was known as Royal
Indian Navy but after 1934 it was known as Indian
Navy.
Chief of Naval Staff:-
The currrent chief of the Naval Staff is
Admiral Sunil Lamba,who took office
on 31 may 2016,replaced Admiral RK
Dhowan.
Strength:-
 Total strength of the navy stood at 67,228, including 1
aircraft carrier,11 destroyers, 14 frigates, 22 corvetts,16
submarines & other vessels.
 MARCOS (marine commandos).It is special operations
unit of the Indian Navy.
Navy Commands in India:-
 Indian Navy is operated with three headquarter. These
Head quarters are:-
 The Western Naval Command:-(Headquarters at Mumbai)
 The Eastern Naval Command:-(Headquarters at
Visakhapatnam)
 The Southern Naval Command:-(Headquarters at Kochi)
 The Western and Eastern Naval Command are operational
commands and exercise control over operations in the
arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal respectively. The
Sourthen Command is designed as the Training Command.

NAVY DAY:-
• In india, 4th December is celebrated as Navy Day.This
was the day when the Indian Navy played a significant
role in the bombing of karachi harbour in the 1971
war.The name given to the attack was Operation
Trident which was launched on December 4.Owing to
its success,the day of the attack has been celebrated as
Navy Day ever since.
Major Conflicts:-
 The Navy has been involved in 2 wars with pakistan.
While the indo-pakistani War of 1965 largely involved
patrolling of the coast,India’s navy played a significant
role in the bombing of karachi harbour in the 1971 war.
THE INDIAN AIR FORCE
Introduction:-
 It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an
auxiliary air force of the British empire and the prefix
Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services
during World War 2.
 After india became independent from the united
kingdom in 1947,the Royal Indian Air Force served the
dominion of India,with the prefix being dropped when
India became a republic in 1950.
Strength:-
 It is the World’s 4th largest Airforce.
 Indian Air Force has a strength of 139,576 active
personnel.There to be approx 1,720+ aircraft.
 It includes 900 combat planes(fighters & attackers)
Air Force Command in India:-
 The Indian Air Force is divided into five operational
and two functional commands.

Air Force Day:-
 India started to celebrate Air Force day on 8th of
October in the year 1932 as an auxiliary air force of
British Empire.
 It’s prime responsibility of securing the Indian Air
Space as well as to carry out the aerial warfare during
any clash.
Major Conflicts:-
 Since 1950 the IAF has been involved in four wars with
neighboring pakistan and one with the People’s
Republic of China.
PARAMILITARY FORCES
Introduction:-
 A SEMI-MILITARIZED FORCE
 Organisational structure,training,subculture,and function
are similar to those of a professional military.
 Not included as part of state’s formal armed forces(under
the law of war ,a state may include it in a armed forces)
 It’s not a military force , but equivalent to a military’s light
infantry force.
 Types:- Irregular military forces
police forces,
Border guards,
states’s military forces
Paramilitary Forces of India:-
In India it has not been defined in any acts.
 Used to refer following forces:-
Assam Rifels
Special Frontier Force
Indian Coast Guard
Central Armed Forces(till 2011)
 Paramilitary Forces subordinate to the Ministry of
Home Affairs,Ministry of Defence.
Assam Rifels:-
 Trace Lineage back to a paramilitary police force that
was formed under the british in 1835 called cachar
Levy.
 Named as Assam Rifels in 1917.
 Work under the control o9f Indian Ministry of Home
Affairs and perform numerous functions.
 It consist of:-currently 46 batallions
63,747 personnel
Special Frontier Force:-
 Paramilitary special force of India created on 14 November
1962.
 The SFF came to be known as Establishment 22 due to
Major General(retd) Sujan Singh Uban of Indian Army.
 Headed by the inspector general under Director General of
Security.
 It consist of 10,000 personnel
 SFF operations:-
 China
 Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971
 Internal operations
 Transport is provided by the Indian Air Force’s
Sarasawa based 117 helicopter unit Himalyan Dragons
which provides airlift cvapability with its HAL Dhruvs
and Mi-17 transport helicopter
Indian Coast Guard:-
 First proposed by the Indian Navy in the 1960.The
Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 18
August 1978 by the coast guard act,1978.It works in
close cooperation with the Indian Navy.It operates
under the Ministry of Defence.
 Indian coast Guard had 42 Coast Guard stations.
 There are 5 regional headquarters of Coast Guard.
 It consist of 15,714 active personnel,171 vessels,60
aircraft
Central Armed Police Forces:-
 The Central Armed Police Forces refers to uniform
nomenclature of five security forces in India under the
authority of Ministry of Home Affairs.
 They are the:-
 Border Security Force(BSF)
 Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF)
 Central Industrial Security Force(CISF)
 Indo-Tibetan Border Police(ITBP)
 Sashastra Seema Bal(SSB)
Central Reserve Police Force:-
 The CRPF is the largest of the CAPF units with 313,678
personnel in239 batalions.
 It includes:-
 The Rapid Action Force(RAF),a 10 battalion anti-riot
force trained to respond to sectarian violence.
The Commando Battalion for Resolute
Action(COBRA),a 10 battailion strong anti-Naxalite
Force.
Border Security Force:-
 The primary role of the Border Security Force is to guard
border of the India with Pakistan and Bangladesh ,it is
deployed both on the IB and the LOC.
 It has 257,363 personnel in 186 battalions with 100+ boats &
22 aircraft
Indo-Tibetan Border Police:-
 The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is deployed for guarding
duties on the border with China from karakoram pass in
ladakh to Diphu la in Arunachal Pradesh covering a total
distance of 3488km.
 It has 89,432 personnel in 56 fighting,2 DM and 4
specialized battalions.
Central Industrial Security Force:-
 One of the largest industrial security forces in the
world, the Central Industrial Security Force provides
security to various public sector understanding and
other critical infrastructure installations across the
country.
 It has a total strength of about 144,418 personnel in 132
battalions.
Sashastra Seema Bal(SSB):-
 The objective of the SSB is to guard the Indo-Bhutan
Borders.
 It has 76,337 personnel and 67 battalions,as well as some
reserved battalions.

NAVY DAY:- • In india, 4th December is celebrated as Navy Day.This was the day when the Indian Navy played a significant role in the bombing of karachi harbour in the 1971 war.The name given to the attack was Operation Trident which was launched on December 4.Owing to its success,the day of the attack has been celebrated as Navy Day ever since.

Introduction:-  It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British empire and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War 2.  After india became independent from the united kingdom in 1947,the Royal Indian Air Force served the dominion of India,with the prefix being dropped when India became a republic in 1950.
  • 21. Strength:-  It is the World’s 4th largest Airforce.  Indian Air Force has a strength of 139,576 active personnel.There to be approx 1,720+ aircraft.  It includes 900 combat planes(fighters & attackers)

  • 26. Air Force Day:-  India started to celebrate Air Force day on 8th of October in the year 1932 as an auxiliary air force of British Empire.  It’s prime responsibility of securing the Indian Air Space as well as to carry out the aerial warfare during any clash.

  • 30. Paramilitary Forces of India:- In India it has not been defined in any acts.  Used to refer following forces:- Assam Rifels Special Frontier Force Indian Coast Guard Central Armed Forces(till 2011)  Paramilitary Forces subordinate to the Ministry of Home Affairs,Ministry of Defence.

Assam Rifels:-  Trace Lineage back to a paramilitary police force that was formed under the british in 1835 called cachar Levy.  Named as Assam Rifels in 1917.  Work under the control o9f Indian Ministry of Home Affairs and perform numerous functions.  It consist of:-currently 46 batallions 63,747 personnel

Special Frontier Force:-  Paramilitary special force of India created on 14 November 1962.  The SFF came to be known as Establishment 22 due to Major General(retd) Sujan Singh Uban of Indian Army.  Headed by the inspector general under Director General of Security.  It consist of 10,000 personnel  SFF operations:-  China  Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971  Internal operations

Indian Coast Guard:-  First proposed by the Indian Navy in the 1960.The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 18 August 1978 by the coast guard act,1978.It works in close cooperation with the Indian Navy.It operates under the Ministry of Defence.  Indian coast Guard had 42 Coast Guard stations.  There are 5 regional headquarters of Coast Guard.  It consist of 15,714 active personnel,171 vessels,60 aircraft

Central Armed Police Forces:-  The Central Armed Police Forces refers to uniform nomenclature of five security forces in India under the authority of Ministry of Home Affairs.  They are the:-  Border Security Force(BSF)  Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF)  Central Industrial Security Force(CISF)  Indo-Tibetan Border Police(ITBP)  Sashastra Seema Bal(SSB)

Central Reserve Police Force:-  The CRPF is the largest of the CAPF units with 313,678 personnel in239 batalions.  It includes:-  The Rapid Action Force(RAF),a 10 battalion anti-riot force trained to respond to sectarian violence. The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action(COBRA),a 10 battailion strong anti-Naxalite Force.

Border Security Force:-  The primary role of the Border Security Force is to guard border of the India with Pakistan and Bangladesh ,it is deployed both on the IB and the LOC.  It has 257,363 personnel in 186 battalions with 100+ boats & 22 aircraft Indo-Tibetan Border Police:-  The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is deployed for guarding duties on the border with China from karakoram pass in ladakh to Diphu la in Arunachal Pradesh covering a total distance of 3488km.  It has 89,432 personnel in 56 fighting,2 DM and 4 specialized battalions.

Central Industrial Security Force:-  One of the largest industrial security forces in the world, the Central Industrial Security Force provides security to various public sector understanding and other critical infrastructure installations across the country.  It has a total strength of about 144,418 personnel in 132 battalions. Sashastra Seema Bal(SSB):-  The objective of the SSB is to guard the Indo-Bhutan Borders.  It has 76,337 personnel and 67 battalions,as well as some reserved battalions.
