Honor Our Veterans – Serve those who served!
Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center will carry out a National Day of Service and Remembrance on Friday,
September 11, 2015, to provide support to veterans and immediate military family members (including
widows/widowers) throughout the Monadnock Region. We are seeking veterans and adults age 55 and
over to serve in teams to help less-able veterans and their families with home repairs, weatherization,
safety, and seasonal projects. Volunteers with special skills, as well as willing laborers, are welcome.
The National Day of Service and Remembrance is now the nation’s largest day of charitable engagement.
It was developed to provide a permanent and constructive way for individuals to annually remember and
pay tribute to those lost and injured on 9/11, and to help recall and rekindle the spirit of unity, compassion,
and service that existed in America following the 9/11 attacks. Together, with the Monadnock United
Way with their Days of Caring, businesses, and many community volunteers, we aspire to make this a
significant event in the Monadnock Region.
For more information and to volunteer, please call Monadnock RSVP at:
(603) 357-6893 or (603) 924-7350 for the Greater Peterborough area.
Monadnock RSVP is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way agency.

The America Reads
Program is looking
for New Volunteers!
Did you know that the percentage of children who
read well has not improved substantially for more
than 25 years? Thirty-eight percent of 4th graders
read below basic level. Would you like to help
change this statistic and improve a child’s life in the
Monadnock region?
If you can commit at least one hour a week, you
can help a child who is falling behind in reading.
Monadnock RSVP’s America Reads Program will
match you with a child in your community to read
with them at their school and provide you with the
training you’ll need to be successful.
If you are interested in joining the America Reads
Volunteer Program, you will be asked to attend
one of the two training classes for new volunteers.
Prior to the training classes, volunteers will
complete an interview and application process.
All volunteers also undergo criminal background
and reference checks.
Fall trainings will take place:
In Peterborough:
Monday, October 5, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
In Keene:
Tuesday, October 13, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
A quick call or email is all it takes to get the process
started. To find out more about America Reads,
contact the Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center at
(603) 357-6893 or send an email to rsvp@mfs.org.

A Little of Your Time Makes a Big Difference
Recently, a CVTC Volunteer Driver arrived at a resident’s home to take him to the doctor. The doctor’s
office had just called to cancel the rider’s appointment. The rider asked, “You’re already here; do you think
you could take me to the food bank? I haven’t eaten in three days.” The driver whisked him off to get
groceries, then took him to the River Center to sign up for fuel assistance and other services that were
available to help him. Everyone knows that there are unmet needs in their community; until one hears a
story like this, it doesn’t really hit home.
Monadnock United Way (MUW) reports that transportation is the greatest need in the Monadnock region
after affordable housing. Contoocook Valley Transportation Company (CVTC) was established in 2008 to
providetransportationforresidentsfromAntrim,Bennington,Dublin,Francestown,Greenfield,Greenville,
Hancock, Jaffrey, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon, and Temple. In 2014, our caring volunteer
drivers provided 2,019 trips for people living in the Eastern Monadnock region. Destinations included
doctor’s offices, grocery stores/food banks, physical and cardiac rehabilitation, dialysis, chemotherapy and
radiation treatments. CVTC is looking for more volunteers; we’d love to hear from you! Choose the rides
that work with your schedule. It is easy to sign up for trips online or over the phone.
We are happy to answer your questions about mileage reimbursement, training and insurance. To learn more,
please contact Marsha Gibson: marsha@cvtc-nh.org or direct-dial (603) 821-0569
Rindge Woman’s Club - Fall In With Us!
If we were students writing a paper on what we've done over the last couple of months it would include
fun things like: Our annual Ice Cream Social with homemade ice cream and all the fixings, a trip to scenic
Lyndeborough for the District Luncheon, maintaining/improving the Mother’s Garden at the Cathedral of
the Pines, and sprucing up the plantings around town.
Our next adventure will be preparing for the Rindge Woman's Club Harvest Fair. It all comes together
on October 10 at the Meeting House and Common and will include arts and crafts, doll boutiques, jewelry
jackpot, fresh produce, delicious homemade food items, and our famous Basket Raffle. Plus, our Cafe will
be open for lunch! The Harvest Fair helps fund our many donations to community activities including our
scholarships, the Got Lunch program, Camp Quest, the Veterans Association, and many more.
If you enjoy “lending a helping hand,” socializing, and fun activities, please come to one of our fall meetings
(7 p.m. at the Meeting House, September 10, October 8, and November 5). As a special treat, our November
guest speaker will be Andrew Card, the new President of Franklin Pierce University. He will be discussing
his background, what brought him to Franklin Pierce, and his goals and plans for the University's future.
Everyone is welcome!

Fire Prevention
By Eric Poor
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6 through 12 this year. Rindge Fire and Rescue plans to celebrate with an
open house on Oct. 3 at the Fire Station at 275 Main Street in Rindge Center. We hope to see you there.
One of the most important places to practice fire prevention in the home is in the kitchen. According
the National Fire Prevention Association two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen – more
than any other place in the home. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office offers the following
safety tips to help prevent kitchen fires:
	 • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food.
	 • If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
	 • When you are cooking food check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
	 • If you have young children use the stove’s back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at
least three feet away from the stove.
	 • When you cook wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.
	 • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels and other flammable items
	 away from your stovetop.
	 • Clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops.
	 • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen area.
	 • In the event of a fire in a cooking pan turn off the heat and use a lid to extinguish the fire. Do not
throw water on a grease fire or try to carry a burning utensil away from the stove.

No Secrets to
Investment Success
Many people seek the “secrets” to investment
success. Is it timing the market just right when
making “buy” or “sell” decisions? Is it finding
“hot” stocks? Actually, these types of moves
have little relevance to most investors — even
the successful ones.
Instead of looking for secret winning formulas,
follow tried-and-true investment moves. For
example, rather than jumping in and out of
the market in a vain attempt to “buy low and
sell high,” simply stay invested. By doing so,
you can ease the impact of short-term price
volatility — and you’ll always be prepared to
take advantage of the next market rally.
Also, don’t waste time looking for “the ground
floor” of the next big thing. The vast majority
of new companies won’t achieve that level of
success. You’re better off forgetting about the
ground floor and instead building a strong
foundation of quality investments suitable for
your risk tolerance and time horizon.
You won’t find any shortcuts to your desired
financial destination. But by taking the slow
and steady path, you can work toward getting
there.

  • 2. -2- Honor Our Veterans – Serve those who served! Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center will carry out a National Day of Service and Remembrance on Friday, September 11, 2015, to provide support to veterans and immediate military family members (including widows/widowers) throughout the Monadnock Region. We are seeking veterans and adults age 55 and over to serve in teams to help less-able veterans and their families with home repairs, weatherization, safety, and seasonal projects. Volunteers with special skills, as well as willing laborers, are welcome. The National Day of Service and Remembrance is now the nation’s largest day of charitable engagement. It was developed to provide a permanent and constructive way for individuals to annually remember and pay tribute to those lost and injured on 9/11, and to help recall and rekindle the spirit of unity, compassion, and service that existed in America following the 9/11 attacks. Together, with the Monadnock United Way with their Days of Caring, businesses, and many community volunteers, we aspire to make this a significant event in the Monadnock Region. For more information and to volunteer, please call Monadnock RSVP at: (603) 357-6893 or (603) 924-7350 for the Greater Peterborough area. Monadnock RSVP is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way agency. Thank-A-Vet All you American veterans living and residing in Rindge, don’t forget about the RAMS Thank-A-Vet Program. All U.S. Veterans living and residing in Rindge are eligible to a free turkey. Monadnock RSVP’s America Reads Program will match you with a child in your community to read with them at their school and provide you with the training you’ll need to be successful. If you are interested in joining the America Reads Volunteer Program, you will be asked to attend one of the two training classes for new volunteers. Prior to the training classes, volunteers will complete an interview and application process. All volunteers also undergo criminal background and reference checks. • 4. -4- A Little of Your Time Makes a Big Difference Recently, a CVTC Volunteer Driver arrived at a resident’s home to take him to the doctor. The doctor’s office had just called to cancel the rider’s appointment. The rider asked, “You’re already here; do you think you could take me to the food bank? I haven’t eaten in three days.” The driver whisked him off to get groceries, then took him to the River Center to sign up for fuel assistance and other services that were available to help him. Everyone knows that there are unmet needs in their community; until one hears a story like this, it doesn’t really hit home. Monadnock United Way (MUW) reports that transportation is the greatest need in the Monadnock region after affordable housing. Contoocook Valley Transportation Company (CVTC) was established in 2008 to providetransportationforresidentsfromAntrim,Bennington,Dublin,Francestown,Greenfield,Greenville, Hancock, Jaffrey, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon, and Temple. In 2014, our caring volunteer drivers provided 2,019 trips for people living in the Eastern Monadnock region. Destinations included doctor’s offices, grocery stores/food banks, physical and cardiac rehabilitation, dialysis, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. CVTC is looking for more volunteers; we’d love to hear from you! Choose the rides that work with your schedule. It is easy to sign up for trips online or over the phone. • 6. -6- Fire Prevention By Eric Poor Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6 through 12 this year. Rindge Fire and Rescue plans to celebrate with an open house on Oct. 3 at the Fire Station at 275 Main Street in Rindge Center. We hope to see you there. One of the most important places to practice fire prevention in the home is in the kitchen. According the National Fire Prevention Association two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen – more than any other place in the home. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office offers the following safety tips to help prevent kitchen fires: • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food. • If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove. • When you are cooking food check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you. • If you have young children use the stove’s back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove. • When you cook wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves. • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels and other flammable items away from your stovetop. • Clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops. • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen area. • In the event of a fire in a cooking pan turn off the heat and use a lid to extinguish the fire. Do not throw water on a grease fire or try to carry a burning utensil away from the stove.
  • 7. -7- No Secrets to Investment Success Many people seek the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right when making “buy” or “sell” decisions? Is it finding “hot” stocks? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to most investors — even the successful ones. Instead of looking for secret winning formulas, follow tried-and-true investment moves. For example, rather than jumping in and out of the market in a vain attempt to “buy low and sell high,” simply stay invested. By doing so, you can ease the impact of short-term price volatility — and you’ll always be prepared to take advantage of the next market rally. Also, don’t waste time looking for “the ground floor” of the next big thing. The vast majority of new companies won’t achieve that level of success. You’re better off forgetting about the ground floor and instead building a strong foundation of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t find any shortcuts to your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there. This is Jason J.
