INTRODUCTION
In order to enter the Airline Industry
students need to acquire basic knowledge
of arrangements made by the various
organizations for passenger travel & Airline
flight operations.
In this module the sections explains the
responsibility of each organizations towards
the smooth functioning of Airlines by
coordinating with the respective
Governments.
Apart from objectives and Aims also outlines
in brief the legal rights of the passenger in
case of death injury or loss.
On the completion of this section students
will be able to understand the role of
International organizations and
conventions such as-
IATA, UFTAA, ICAO, PATA, TAAI Warsaw
Convention, Chicago Convention, & the
Bilateral Agreements.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA ) is a
trade association of the world’s airlines. Consisting of
268 airlines, representing 117 countries.
It is headquartered in Montreal, Canada with executive
offices in Geneva, Switzerland.
IATA represents it’s members interest by promoting safe
reliable services.
IATA organized first world wide tariff or traffic
conference in 1947, which worked out agreements
related to fare construction rules.

IATA plays an important role in the creation of essential
training and validation of materials for airlines and
travel agencies, for the safe-keeping and processing.
Functions of IATA
IATA has many functions like
1. price setting.
2. World wide accreditation of travel agents.
3. Assigning two-letter and three-letter codes to the airports
and airlines.
4. It regulates the shipping of dangerous goods and publishes
the Dangerous Goods Regulations manual(DGR).

Universal Federation of Travel Agents Association
(UFTAA) originate from the Universal Federation of Travel
Agents Association created in Rome, Italy on November
22nd 1966.
UFTAA represents national travel agents associations in a
significant number of countries .
The headquarters of UFTAA is in Monte Carlo, MONACO.

FUNCTIONS OF UFTAA
1. To unite and consolidate the federations of travel
agents and to globally enhance the interests of
their members.
2. To stand for the travel agents activities before
various world-wide bodies, governmental
authorities and suppliers.
3. To assists in solving conflicts resulting from
commercial relations for which harmonious
settlement can not be reached.
4. It develop and assist the professional training of
travel agents.
5. UFTAA also lobbies to oppose legislation
directly harmful to tourism industry.

PACIFIC AREA TRAVEL
ASSOCIATION (P.A.T.A)
PATA is a non profit organization set up with the objective of
promoting developing and facilitating travel to and within
the pacific area region and the south east area region
including India.
Pacific Travel Association was founded in the year
1951 to stimulate interest in the pacific region as a
vacationland.
PATA’s 1st conference was held in 1952 and it’s
headquarters established in San Francisco, U.S.A in
1953.
PATA’s first Asian office is made in Manila,
Philippines in the year 1976.

Functions of P.A.T.A
1. Develops, promotes, and facilitates travel in the
pacific areas.
2. It initiated PATA code for Environmental tourism.
3. It focuses on the travel opportunities and build up
awareness and specific contracts among the travel
trade in countries from where the tourist originate.
4. PATA represents countries in the Pacific and Asia
that have united to achieve a common goal.

INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION
ORGANIZATION (ICAO)
International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO) is a
specialized technical agency which is created on April 4,
1947 for the purpose of promoting the safe and orderly
development of civil aviation throughout the world.
The ICAO is composed of 185 member nations that
meets once every three years at an assembly.
The Agency headquarter is in Montreal, CANADA.

FUNCTIONS OF ICAO
1. ICAO ensure the safe and orderly growth to
international civil aviation throughout the world.
2. It meets the needs of the people of the world for safe
regular, efficient , economical air transport.
3. It prevent economical waste caused by unreasonable
competition.
4. It avoid discrimination between contracting countries.
5. Also promote safety of flight in international air
navigation.

The Warsaw Convention
1929
The Warsaw Convention is an International convention which regulates
liability for International carriage of persons ,luggage or goods performed
by aircraft for reward.
It was signed on 12th october ,1929 in Warsaw. It was amended in 1955 at
The Hague and in 1975 in Montreal.
In particular the Warsaw Convention has the following rules
:-
1. Carriers issue passenger tickets.
2. Carriers issue baggage checks for checked luggage;
3. There is a limitation for period of 2 years within which a
claim must be brought (Article 29); and a carrier’s liability
is at least:

Objectives of Warsaw Convention
1. The important objectives of War saw convention is the
carrier is liable to the passenger, shipper or consignee
unless it can prove that it has taken all necessary measures
to avoid damage.
2. Warsaw Convention set compensation for injury or death
at about £5,000 or £10,000 ($ 10,000 or $ 20,000) on
flights only outside the U.S.
3. It sets rules for documents of carriage, for legal jurisdiction
and the air carriers liability and limitations.
4. The Warsaw Convention provides that a plaintiff can file a
lawsuit at his or her discretion in one of the following
forums:-
i) The carrier's principal place of business through which
the contract was made.
ii) The domicile of the carrier.
iii) The place of the destination

Montreal Convention is a convention for the
unification of certain rules for international
carriage by air.

OBJECTIVES OF MONTREAL
CONVENTION
1. The Montreal Convention was brought
about mainly to amend liabilities to be
paid to families for death or injury whilst
on board an aircraft.
2. Under the Montreal Convention, air carriers are
strictly liable for proven damages up to 100,000
special drawing rights (SDR), a mix of currency
values established by the International Monetary
Fund (IMF).
3. It amended important provisions of the Warsaw
Convention's regime concerning compensation
for the victims of air disasters.
4. The Convention attempts to re-establish
uniformity and predictability of rules relating to
the international carriage of passengers, baggage
and cargo.

OBJECTIVES OF CHICAGO
CONVENTION
The aim and objective of the organization are to
develop the principles and techniques of
international navigation and to foster the
planning and development of international air
transport such as:-
1. Insure the safe and orderly growth of
international civil aviation throughout the
world .
2. Encourage the arts of air crafts design and
operation for peaceful purposes.
3. Encourage the development of airways,
airports and air navigation facilities for
international civil aviation .

During this assignment I have learnt a lot about how to make a
particular assignment with perfection. For me It is a great
experience to make. Everybody like our teacher friends all help
me to make this assignment.
Our teacher Ananda Sannal gives us the freedom to choose
whether we like to present it individually or as a group.
This assignment gives me a knowledge about the International
associations for Aviation and Travel like IATA, UFTAA, PATA,
ICAO and also about their functions and objectives.
I must say, from this assignment I understand how those
association work and their contribution to the travel industry.
