Supporting food safety, security and a sustainable dairy food chain
January 2014 — SmartAgri announced the release of iBo™" (1), its patented animal location-motiontracking technology(2) developed by a European collaboration of ICT-Engineering teams, and an
associated cloud service that supports automated management for dairy cows —the first of its kind in
the global dairy industry (3). The new product and service will be made available to selected producers
across Europe and North America.
With iBo™ which could best be described as a modern version of the traditional cow bell, where
producers know where their cows are at all times, the same sensing technologies developed for use
in mobile phones are incorporated into a tag worn on the cows collar, which automatically identifies,
locates, measures and records the animals movements and temperature changes. This animal data,
to include sensory data from the animals environment is collected in the cloud and presented as a
graphic on a website that reports on the location and trends in the animals activities and its’
environment that is easy to understand at a glance, facilitating management of the animals health and
enabling applications to support the animals lives and our demands for safe, quality food produced in
an environmentally friendly way.

iBo™ in use

Background
Given the global shifts in modern dairying, where there are fewer producers to manage increasing
herd sizes it is becoming increasingly difficult as the herd grows for the farmer to individually monitor
each animal’s behaviour and health. In response SmartAgri has patented and developed the iBo™
system and cloud based service to support the monitoring of dairy cows.

Service features
1. Continuous identification, location and health monitoring of cows in a herd
The iBo™ tag automatically locates precisely where a cow is, its activity, interaction with other cows,
and changes that are also linked to information about its environment. The data measured and
recorded by the iBo™ tag are automatically uploaded to the cloud using the dairyCa communication
system whenever the tag is in range of the receivers or a farmer holds a smartphone near the animal.
Once online, the data is presented graphically on a custom website that makes trends in the cows’
activities easy to understand at a glance. The system is based on an open platform that enables
producers to manually add or integrate additional information, such as milk production, food typevolume, animal weight or condition score using key features on the website. This helps managers get
a stronger sense of their animals’ health, production profile and welfare, while enabling real time
communication with the animals in a herd.

2. The dairy industry's first identification, location and tracking system specifically adapted for
dairy animals
The iBo™ tag uses a precision tracking system that identifies and tracks an animal in three
dimensions with sensors that provide animal identification/ position/ direction/ movement rate in
combination with environmental/ visual sensors in the iBo™ receivers that detect environmental
changes in green-house gas emissions, temperature and light. Automated inference technology is
used to identify, locate and track an animal, resulting in the dairy industry's first automated tracking
system fully adapted for dairy animals and their production environment. This, results in a highly
accurate measurement of an animals’ location and activity, linked to its environment and measured
automatically.

Data measured by the iBo™ tag and receivers are collected in the cloud, which provides unified
management of identification, location, productive, health for each animal and environmental data. In
the future, this will facilitate sharing information with veterinarians and research institutions.
In addition, SmartAgri plans to launch a joint study on animal behaviour and health in 2014 in
cooperation with key partners across the dairy food chain and veterinary research teams on food
safety and security. SmartAgri anticipates expanded features and services as a result of these
efforts.
