The sociological eye means looking at the things for what they are, as best we can give
the blinders of interest and ideology, of small knitted groups and ritualized belief. It is not an
individual enterprise. Chaining our efforts together as long term network of theorists and
researchers improves one’s own sociological vision, provided we make the effort. The sociological
eye holds up a periscope above the tides of political and intellectual partisanship, spying out the
patterns of social life in every direction. A sociological eye enables you to see what others may
not notice. It allows you to peer beneath the surface of the situation and discern social patterns.
Sociology like everything else, is a product of particular historical conditions. But also Collins
believe in a distinctive intellectual activity. Its appeal is strong enough to keep it alive, whatever
its name will be in future and whatever happens to surrounding institutional forms. The aim of this
activity is to draw many of us into sociology. One becomes hooked on being a sociologist. The
activity is this, it is looking at the world around us, the immediate world that you and I live in,
through sociological eye. There is sociology of everything, you can turn on your sociological eye
no matter where you are or what you are doing. You may be in meeting , you can check pattern of
whom is sitting next to whom, who gets to work , who makes eye contact, and rhythm of laughter,
speech making so on. In the same way you can scan the class and ethnic pattern of neighborhood,
look for lines of age segregation etc. so in every walk of everyday life, it is sociological arena of
discovery and the source at which we renew our energies and our enthusiasm.

Randall Collins feels that all of us who are turned on by sociology, who love what we do, have
sociological eye. This gives us new theoretical ideas, the world viewed by sociologist is not bound
by immediate micro situations. The sociological eye sees suggestions of social movements
mobilizing or indicating class domination or conflict. Whatever we read with sociological eye
becomes a clue to the larger patterns of society. Collins claim that all kinds of sociologists, micro
ethnographers and statisticians, historical comparitivists and theorists alike, have sociological eye.
Collins suggest that turning on the sociological eye is the main way that many of us has become
sociologists, but it isn’t the only way. There is another way which also acts as a continuing source
of energy and commitment that is the path of social activism. Many of us become interested in
sociology because we had social commitments. We wanted to do something to the society, help
society, fight injustice and elevate the oppressed. This image of sociology has long been foremost
in public eye. Sociology has two commitments what Collins called ‘sociological eye’ and ‘social
activism’. Both can be combined, some feel both are same. In 1950s C.W.Mills ‘The Sociological
Imagination’ regarded true sociological commitment to social activist and reconstruction of
society. Probably the sociological eye will always be the possession of a little group of devotees
within larger society. The sociological eye expands the people’s vision in visualizing social
pattern.
