• Intonation is the variation in the pitch of the voice
when speaking.
• Intonation is about how we say the words, rather
than what we say.
• We use intonation to express our feelings and to
express whether or not we have finished speaking.
• If there were no intonation, our voices would sound
flat and monotonous like a robot’s
3. TWO BASIC
INTONATION
PATTERNS:
RISING &
FALLING
• RISING INTONATION: The voice rises sharply at the
end of the sentence.
- Questions expecting a yes/no answer
Example: Do you like reading?
- Exclamations expressing surprise and disbelief
Example: Such a lovely day!
No way!
- Listing items
Example: I’ll go and buy some sugar, butter
and beef.
- Choice questions:
Example: Would you like tea, coffee or ayran?

• FALLING INTONATION: The voice rises earlier in
the sentence then falls at the end of the
sentence.
- Wh Questions (Information questions)
Example: Where do you come from?
- Commands
Example: Sit down!
Open the windows!
- Statements
Example: I usually go to the theatre on
Saturdays.
He doesn’t eat meat.
5. EXAMPLE DIALOGUE
Selin: It’s my birthday soon. I’ll be
eighteen next Sunday.
Coşku: Oh, really? Are you going
to have a party?
Selin: I’m going to have a meal in
a restaurant with a few friends.
Would you like to come?
Coşku: That’ll be nice, thanks for
the invitation.
