The boss was complaining in our
staff meeting the other day that he
wasn't getting any respect. The next
day, he brought a small sign that

One day there’s a couple of kids in a

Grandpa and Grandpa were sitting in
their porch rockers watching the
beautiful sunset and reminiscing
about "the good old days," when
Grandma turned to Grandpa and
said, "Honey, do you remember
when we first started dating and you
used to just casually reach over and
take my hand?"
Grandpa looked over at her, smiled

Grandma and gave her a lingering
kiss on her wrinkled cheek.
Growing bolder still, Grandma said,
"Honey, do you remember how, after
we were first married, you'd kind of
nibble on my ear?"
Grandpa slowly got up from his
rocker and headed into the house.
Alarmed, Grandma said, "Honey,
where are you going?"
Grandpa replied, "To get my teeth!"
“I’m worried about you always being
at the bottom of your class,” said the
father to his son.
“Don’t worry Dad,” he replied.
“They still teach the same thing at
both ends.”
Father Sullivan was ministering to a
man on his deathbed.
"Renounce Satan!" yelled Father
Sullivan.
"No," said the dying man.
"I say, renounce the devil and his
works!"
"No," the man repeats.
"And why, in the name of all that is
holy, not?" asks Father Sullivan.

Secondary School Thurles has been named
the winner of the Senior Secondary Schools
Category at the Bord Gáis Energy Student
Theatre Awards. This is the first year of the
awards which have been set up by Bord Gáis
Energy to encourage and reward participation
in drama among school children across Ire-
land. The awards were presented by writer
and actress Amy Huberman at a ceremony at
the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Wednesday
9th April.

Last week the Hairdressing Salon at
Templemore College of Further Ed-
ucation was a hive of activity as stu-
dents and teachers revamped the
hairs of members of the Roscrea
Community Employment Scheme.
These brave volunteers (pictured
below) offered their precious heads
to the shave or dye challenge all in
aid of a worthwhile fundraiser for
The Irish Cancer Society.
The students and staff at Templem-
ore College were delighted when
Paddy Reidy – CE Supervisor ap-
proached the college and asked for
their help with shaving, dying and
transforming over twenty of his
members heads for this worthwhile
cause.
These brave volunteers work as
caretakers, general maintenance op-
eratives, environmental workers,
administrators and grounds keepers
under the Community Employment
Scheme and have been collecting
sponsorship for their shave or dye
challenge for the past number of
weeks. € 3753 was raised for the
Irish Cancer Society. Well done to
Paddy and all the team!

Celestial Green Ventures, an envi-
ronmental conservation company
based in Ireland, is pleased to an-
nounce the launch of their Social
Funding Programme, aimed at help-
ing small projects and start-ups all
over the Republic of Ireland make a
difference in their communities. Al-
though their primary concern is the
protection of the Amazon and sus-
tainable development for the local
communities there, the work carried
out by Celestial Green Ventures in
Brazil has served to reinforce the
importance of local programmes in
tackling major issues. It is for this
reason that they have decided to of-
fer financial support to 4 separate
projects, to the tune of €5,000 each.
All charities, not-for-profit, and
community based organisations that
are registered in the Republic of Ire-
land are eligible to apply for funding
through the programme. Given their
corporate objectives, they are partic-
ularly interested in assisting projects
that have a strong social & environ-
mental purpose, although applica-
tions are welcomed from all project
types. Ultimately however, the pro-
gramme is looking for creative, tal-
ented, and driven individuals with an
innovative & unique solution to
problems faced by people or com-
munities in Ireland.
Applications
Those hoping to benefit from the
support of the Social Funding Pro-
gramme can make an application up
to and including the 16th of May
2014. Applicants can submit as
many entries as they like, but cannot
be awarded support for more than
one.
The application process itself should
hold no surprises: applicants are re-
quired to provide a short description
of their proposal, along with project
goal’s, plans, reasons to select their
project, a complete breakdown of
estimated costs, and any other sup-
porting information.
The winners will be selected by a
panel composed of Celestial Green
Ventures employees and guest judge
Noel Griffin, former CEO of the IS-
PCA. The review period will take
place over the two weeks following
the closing date for applications,
with the successful applicants being
announced on the 30th of May.
Funds will then be awarded on the
6th of June 2014.

New Programme Seeks Projects

Originally organised a
number of years ago by New-
port resident Cathal O’Toole
as nothing more than a casual
meeting of like minded vin-
tage VW enthusiasts from a
vintage VW club called
Eircooled.com, Jumpstart, as
it is now known has grown
into quite the event.
Spurred on by the success of
the 2013 event the decision
was made to step it up so to speak and
the car park previously used in Lim-
erick was not going to cut it anymore.
As Cathal says the decision to move
to Loughmore was a simple one; “I
have friends living in and close to
Loughmore so I had seen how pictur-
esque the village is, I’ve experienced
the high quality food served in The
Cottage and the support the locals put
into everything held in their village so
it was simple really”.
The decision was made all that much
easier when Thurles based CM Signs
offered to sponsor the event. For
those that don’t know CM Signs, it is
owned by VW nuts Brian Maher and
Graham Cullen so for them, this part-
nership made perfect sense.
With the confirmation of the event
only happening at the end of January,
the pressure was on to get everything
in place. Prizes were sourced for the
goodie bags which were given out to
those that arrived early on the day. It
should be noted that there was no en-
try fee for this event, it was 100%
free so with the value of each goodie
bag ranging from € 10 to €40 depend-
ing on their content this makes this
event one of the most unique out
there. Added to the impressive list of
‘goodies’ were the prizes on offer for
various classes. Owners drove away
with a staggering €1,000 worth of
prizes which included magazine sub-
scriptions, vouchers for VW special-
ists, car accessories and car parts
while the Car of the Show winner re-
ceived a gorgeous hand crafted wood
and metal trophy. Harvey’s VW
Dealers brought out a New Beetle to
go on display alongside its vintage
brethren. Kilkenny native Kevin
Reade, himself a VW enthusiast and
member of www.Eircooled.com ,
was DJ for the day. Kevin’s 1970’s
ex-RTE VW van now boasts a full
array of DJ equipment so was perfect
for the day.

5th year student in St Joseph’s Col-
lege Borrisoleigh, is the only Tipper-
ary contestant to reach the
All-Ireland beating over 1,000 con-
testants to reach the final.
TeenStars, sponsored by the Irish

LIMERICK City is cooking up
something special for the June
Bank Holiday weekend as part of
Limerick National City of Culture
2014. ‘Culture & Chips’ is a food
carnival taking place in the city
centre in a specially transported
1920’s Spiegeltent.
Frites, chips, potato wedges or
French fries – whatever you call
them, there is little to rival the
mighty chip. Humble in stature,
there are few foods that hold such
affection in the hearts (well, bellies)
of so many. Curly or thick-cut,
wedged or crinkled, made tradition-
ally from potatoes but so often from
many other vegetables now too, it is
high time we celebrate the chip…
Limerick City has decided to do just
that, and has announced details of
the Culture & Chips food carnival
taking place over the June Bank
Holiday weekend. An authentic spe-
cially transported 1920’s Spiegeltent
will be erected in Arthur’s Quay
Park for the duration of what prom-
ises to be one of the best weekends
of the year.
Saturday afternoon May 31st sees
the World Chip Championships tak-
ing place to find the best-tasting
chip on the planet. This will be an
open contest to all cooks with a pas-
sion for the frite, each hoping to cut
the mustard and take home the inau-
gural title.
The Culture & Chips Spiegeltent
will host a Culinary Carnival ban-
quet on the evening of Friday May
30th. Pull on your best bib and tuck-
er with a menu created by Chef Paul
Williams of Canteen using locally
sourced produce from the region
with matching wines and craft beers.
Saturday morning will see children’s
theatre take over the Spiegeltent
while Sunday morning promises a
breakfast with a difference.
The Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow
will be resident in the tent on Thurs-
day May 29th, while ‘Pommes in
the Park’ on Saturday promises to
delight with a fantastical evening of
cabaret and chips.
Jack L will bring his special brand
of entertainment to the Spiegeltent
on Sunday night June 1st, with the
weekend wind-down on Monday
afternoon courtesy of Salon du Chat
to the sounds of the Brad Pitt Light
Orchestra.

the Irish Chamber Orchestra are pre-
senting Carmen in the Milk Market
on Thursday and Friday; TomCat
Street Festival takes place on the
streets and in the hostelries of Tho-

host of other events, food trails and

Tipperary Green Business Network
have launched a Poster Competition
for Primary Schools in Tipperary.
The competition, which has been
funded by North and South Tipperary
County Councils, under LA21 Local
Agenda Grant 2013, aims to get
children thinking about green
business. The theme of the poster is
‘How could you make a business
green?’ and all Primary Schools in
Tipperary are eligible to enter.
The launch was attended by a number
of businesses from Tipperary Green
Businesses Network, representatives
from North and South Tipperary Co.
Councils (Deirdre Cox & Mary
Carroll) and children from nearby
Scoil Ailbhe who were accompanied
by a teacher from the school, Siobhan
Power as well as the manager of the
Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre,
John Kennedy.
In welcoming the assembled guests,
the Chairman of TGBN, Patrick
Lambe, said that it was never too
early to get children thinking about
green business, noting that ‘these
children were the entrepreneurs of
the future’. Deirdre Cox,
Environment Awareness Officer with
North Tipperary Co. Council said
that the competition was a great
opportunity for teachers to engage
their students in thinking about
questions relating to green business
and agreed that it was never too early
to get children involved in thinking
about how businesses could go green.
She added that in her experience, ‘it’s
the children who teach the adults –
children are very informed on green
issues’.
Brian Moloney of Biofinch Ltd,
Thurles told the group about his
vessel composting system, which
turns food waste into garden compost
in 6 weeks. Biofinch Ltd are
sponsoring a prize of one of their
composters valued at €600 to the
overall winning school in Tipperary
in addition to the other prizes of book
tokens for the winning school and
pupil. Sean O’ Farrell of Cloncannon
Biofarm in Moneygall spoke of the
importance of biodiversity and what
Cloncannon Biofarm does in
furthering education on this. Sean is
sponsoring a trip to his farm for 20
students for the overall winning
school.
There are lots of valuable prizes of
book tokens and membership of
Birdwatch Ireland for the winning
schools and pupil in North and South
Tipperary and for the overall winning
school in Tipperary. All the winning
posters will be framed and returned to
the schools. Schools have been

Poster competition for Primary Schools
What is FMS and SFMA? Functional
Movement Screen and Selective Func-
tional Movement Assessment are based
on an exercise philosophy and corre-
sponding set of resources which has
resulted from sound science, years of
innovation and current research. These
movement screens ultimately result in
exposing a previously undiagnosed
dysfunction in a players/athletes move-
ment pattern that could be affecting
performance or be setting up that indi-
vidual for injury or recurrent injury.
Once the dysfunctional pattern is deter-
mined, we at Premier Clinic are trained
to implement strategies based on cor-
rective functional movement and selec-
tive functional movement principles to
negate the dysfunctional movement
that the individual displays. The cor-
rective strategies will involve very spe-
cific exercises which will maximise
brain re-training regarding movement
recruitment and muscular interplay.
Ultimately these corrective strategies
target the exposed problem and will
effectively restore proper movement

North Tipperary Hospice Movement’s
Fire Walk Fundraiser
On Saturday night 6th April, the rain
subsided for a unique event where 38
brave adrenaline seekers walked bare
foot over 20 feet of hot coals. Friends
and family and supporters were there
cheering them on to achieve the im-
possible and walk on fire. To say that
the atmosphere at the Abbey Court
Hotel was ‘fiery’ is a complete un-
derstatement. The car park which was
literally on fire, was the chosen venue
for the North Tipperary Hospice
Movement’s Fire Walk Fundraiser -
“Firing It Up In North Tipperary -
Anything Is Possible”!
Master Firewalker Brian Moore of
Peak Potential conducted a two hour
seminar to all 38 participants prior to
the walk in order get them in the
‘mind over matter’ way of thinking -
channelling their energy and over-
coming their fears. Outside, Drum
Dance Ireland were playing bongos
and drums to entertain supporters
whilst the fire was burning, creating
an electric atmosphere before the
brave firewalkers came out.
At 9.30 the Firewalkers came out
charged up and ready to go, one by
one the volunteers daringly walked
across the burning coals. Mid-way
through, the coals were topped up
before non-other than ‘Feet of
Flames’ Irish dancing star Bernadette
Flynn walked across! Chief Fire Of-
ficer Dave Carroll was the final walk-
er of the night; he thankfully didn’t
need to call on his Firefighter col-
leagues to quench his feet!
The North Tipperary Hospice Move-
ment is delighted that their Firewalk
event has so far raised almost €8000,
which was pledged in sponsorship on
the night. The event has been hailed a
great success by the Kay O Dono-
ghue of the North Tipperary Hospice.

Martha Davis has an excellent beliefs
inventory outlining 50 irrational ideas that
are connected to negative self-talk. You
have to score on each of these under the
headings one. 1. Somewhat agree. 2. Agree.
3. Disagree. Some of the irrational ideas she
lists are ‘it is important to me that others
approve of me’, ‘I hate to fail at anything’,
‘when I don’t get what I want, I get mad’, ‘I
find it hard to go against what others think’,
‘it upsets me a lot when I make mistakes’, I
worry a lot about what people think about
me’. Martha then takes each of these 50
irrational ideas and tests them for their valid-
ity. She offers a realistic appraisal of some
of these. To carry such irrational thoughts is
a great burden and will spoil your happiness.
I would recommend that you borrow this
book and photocopy this inventory. It will
give you a very accurate idea of your nega-
tive beliefs.
Chapter 3 of Bourne’s workbook gives an
overview of a recovery approach, exploring
the physical, emotional, behavioural, men-
tal, interpersonal, whole self, and existen-
tial-spiritual aspects. Many of these are
explored in these articles, but the book is
more comprehensive. Like Martha Davis’s
book, it also outlines relaxation techniques.
We are motivated to practise these tech-
niques because he shows with clarity how
beneficial they are in reducing anxiety.
These exercises, for example, result is a
decrease in our heart and breathing rate,
lowers our blood pressure, reduces our body
tension and oxygen consumption, slows our
rumination, and increases our alpha wave
activity in our brain. Alpha Brain Waves are
a sign of relaxed activity in your brain. Al-
pha brainwaves are defined as between the
frequency 8 Hz – 12 Hz, and are the domi-
nant brain wave activity when your body
and mind are relaxed. If you have ever felt
relaxed after meditation or yoga, you have
experienced alpha brain waves. The more
stressful beta brain waves are the opposite of
alpha brain activity.
Series 4, no. 20. Anxiety. Appropriate
intimate relationships lessen anxiety. The
inner child and the emotional re-experi-
encing of childhood.
In the context of anxiety, Bourne has an
interesting section on support in our intimate
relationships, which helps to fight anxiety.
He looks at 10 facets of an intimate relation-
ship, which are interesting. These range
from having common interests to common
values, such as friendships, education, reli-
gion, finances, sex health and so on. He
stresses the need for a sense of romance in
the relationship and the ability to keep this
alive throughout the years. There must also
be compatibility between relative needs for
being together and having one’s own space.
If there is a mismatch between these, the
relationship will not meet individual needs.
In other words if one partner needs a lot of
individual space and the other needs a lot of
togetherness, the result will be disharmony
and intimacy is damaged. This will add to
stress levels, especially in the partner who
values togetherness. An intimate relation-
ship also involves support for each other’s
growth, and willingness by both to nurture
and support each other in growing and
changing. This involves a high level of self-
esteem, tolerance, and the absence of a sense
of control.
Love is in the eye of the beholder, the saying
goes. So in the initial stages of a relationship
partners tend to idealise each other. As the
relationship progresses their individual im-
perfections and shortcomings begin to be
recognised. Intimacy involves accepting and
tolerating these flaws and imperfections.
This more realistic view should be accompa-
nied by affection, warmth and friendliness
expressed in words and behaviours such as
hugging and cuddling, and sharing of feel-
ings. The ability to share feelings (being
vulnerable) is a key ingredient to a good
intimate relationship and involves good
communication, whereby partners listen to
each other, hear what is being said and are
empathic to each other. All of these charac-
teristics of a good intimate relationship
should be cemented by strong mutual trust,
which is built up over time.
I have great respect for the anxiety-busting
techniques mentioned throughout this series,
but my overall conclusion is that an emo-
tional re-experiencing of childhood stuff
has a more lasting effect than any other. That
is a big statement, and one likely to be chal-
lenged. Yet, again and again I have seen
self-esteem grow and fears and anxieties
vanish when a sufferer is able to travel the
emotional road. This is not always easy,
because it involves touching the inner child,
and not everyone can do it. Some do not
even understand what it means. But, it is
extremely beneficial and healing to bring out
and recognise our inner child, who may be
an angry child, a lost child, a lonely child, a
happy child, a hurt child, a shamed child,
and so on. We then become the loving inner
parent, not the critical one or the protective
one. Some people suffering from anxiety
never reach that stage, and people whose
feelings are frozen cannot even understand
the concept of the inner child. I find working
on the inner child to be the most fruitful way
of dissipating anxiety.
The inner child represents our emotions, and
by seeing and loving the inner child we can
release our emotions, and break the protec-
tive shell that we have built as children.
Freezing our emotions and creating the shell
may have been necessary to protect our-
selves in an abusive environment as chil-
dren. However, when we grow to adulthood
it is counterproductive. It is easy to see how
freezing our feelings and building this shell
can foster anxiety. Our tears are a symbol of
our feelings, and when we weep for the inner
child, our tears melt the ice and the shell and
we become whole and anxiety free.
