Scanning and reproducing solid models for manufacturing no longer requires costly, time-consuming middleware or costly tools to be effective. New solutions like Geomagic’s new scan-in-CAD software, SPARK, and handheld scanners from FARO are revolutionizing the design process. Together, these solutions are allowing engineers to design and produce physical products more quickly and less expensively than ever before.
Join representatives from FARO and Geomagic as they discuss how to quickly acquire scan data from physical objects, process the information and create solid models for final production or other downstream processes. All attendees are eligible for a free trial of Geomagic Spark.

6. About FARO
FARO is the world’s most trusted source for 3D measurement technology. The
Company develops and markets computer-aided measurement and imaging devices
and software.
Products Include
•
•
•
•
Articulating Measurement Arms: Edge / Gage
Laser Trackers: Vantage
Laser Scanners: Focus3D
Software: CAM2 / SCENE
7. Laser Scanning with FARO
Type of digitization that uses laser systems to
capture data without touching the part.
• Includes white and blue light systems, as well as
laser line probes, used with portable CMM’s.
• We will focus on those types of probes that can be
used in tandem with an articulated arm (e.g. Laser
Line Probes (LLPs)
8. Laser Scanning with FARO
How Scanning Works
• A Laser Line Probe (LLP), a non-contact scanner,
attached to a seven-axis FaroArm
• Laser projects a line onto object surface
• Camera determines the location for each point
along the stripe
• Points are rendered in a point cloud
9. Laser Scanning with FARO
A scan with an LLP will produce a point cloud, which is just a large 3D group of
points that correspond to the geometry measured.
•
Point clouds can be exported to CAD and turned into models
•
They can also be used for inspection
10. FARO Edge ScanArm
The World’s First “Smart” Arm
•
Integrates seamlessly with Geomagic SPARK
•
Integrated touch screen and operating system
•
Wireless connectivity
•
Lightweight LLP (2.7 oz)
•
Fast data capture: 45,000 points per second
12. APPLICATIONS
Non-Contact Inspection
Inspect soft, deformable or complex shapes; perform cloud-to-CAD comparison, rapid
prototyping, reverse engineering, and 3D modeling
First Article Inspection
Easily measure and compare prototype parts to nominal data
CAD-Based Inspection
Measure directly against CAD data; see real-time deviations from nominal
Reverse Engineering
Digitize a part or object to create a fully-surfaced CAD model
14. About Geomagic
• We make the real, digital. And the digital, real.
• Leading 3D software for scanning, design, inspection and interaction
• 15+ years 3D leadership; over 17,000 global customers
• Acquired Sensable Technologies in April, leaders in organic design software and haptic)
virtual touch) devices
