HISTORY OF IATA
IATA was founded in Havana, Cuba, in April 1945. It is the prime
vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable,
secure and economical air services - for the benefit of the
world's consumers.
The international scheduled air transport industry is more than
100 times larger than it was in 1945. Few industries can match
the dynamism of that growth, which would have been much
less spectacular without the standards, practices
and procedures developed within IATA.
At its founding, IATA had 57 members from 31 nations, mostly in
Europe and North America. Today it has some 260
members from 117 nations in every part of the globe.
The modern IATA is the successor to the International Air Traffic
Association founded in the Hague in 1919 - the year of
the world's first international scheduled services.
IATA OBJECTIVES:
As per the Articles of Association of IATA, the
main objectives are:
i. To promote safe, regular and economical air transport for the
benefit of the people of the world, to foster air commerce and,
to study the problems connected therewith;
ii. To provide means for collaboration among the air transport
enterprises engaged directly or indirectly in international air
transport services;
iii. To cooperate with the International Civil Aviation Organization
and other international organizations;
iv. To provide a common platform for travel agencies/tour operators’
v. To promote and develop international tourism.
HISTORY OF UFTAA
 In the 1960s at the dawn of mass tourism, a few tourism
professionals with great foresight saw the need of a global
umbrella organization for the travel agency industry.
 By merger of Federation international des agencies de
voyages (FIAV) and Universal Organization of Travel
Agents' Associations (UOTAA), the Universal Federation of
Travel Agents ‘Associations (UFTAA) was formed on
November 22nd 1966 in Rome.
 Its first President was an Italian, Giuliano Magnoni, later
followed by 24 leading personalities from all parts of the
world. The federation was later renamed United Federation
of Travel Agents´ Associations, still known under the same
well-established acronym UFTAA
•UFTAA’s mission is to be an international
forum where matters affecting the world
travel industry are addressed, representing
and defending the interests of incoming and
outgoing tour operators, travel and tourism
agencies before the governmental bodies,
suppliers and other entities of international
scope.
• It also aims at strengthening its members’
image and enhances the world travel and
tourism industry and a sustainable tourism
UFTAA’s MISSION

HISTORY OF ICAO
 The Convention on International Civil Aviation (also known
as Chicago Convention), was signed on 7 December 1944 by
52 States.
 Pending ratification of the Convention by 26 States, the
Provisional International Civil Aviation Organization (PICAO)
was established.
 It functioned from 6 June 1945 until 4 April 1947.
 By 5 March 1947 the 26th ratification was received.
 ICAO came into being on 4 April 1947.
 In October of the same year, ICAO became a specialized
agency of the United Nations linked to Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC).
Original version. Signed at Chicago on 7 December 1944
ICAO was originally created to promote the safe and efficient development
of civil aviation. One enduring aspect of the Organization's work over the
last six decades has been to help States improve civil aviation in their
country through projects implemented under ICAO's Technical
Cooperation Programme. Since its creation in 1952, the Technical
Cooperation Bureau (TCB) has been responsible for the execution of
ICAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme advising and assisting States,
donors, the private sector and other funding sources in all matters relating
to the development of safe and secure civil aviation.
To this day the Technical Cooperation Programme remains a permanent
priority activity of ICAO which complements the technical role of the
Regular Programme by supporting Member States in the implementation
of ICAO regulations, policies and procedures. The Technical Cooperation
Programme is conducted under the broad policy guidance of the ICAO
Assembly and of the Council. Subject to general guidance by the
Secretary General, the Technical Cooperation Programme is executed
under delegated authority by the Technical Cooperation Bureau (TCB),
under its Director.
ICAO STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES 2014-2016
 As the global forum for cooperation among its Member States and
the world aviation community, the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) sets and evolves Standards and
Recommended Practices (SARPs) for the safe and orderly
development of international civil aviation.
 Presently, there are over 10,000 such Standards and provisions
contained in ICAO's Annexes to the Convention on International Civil
Aviation.
 In its ongoing mission to support and enable a global air transport
network that meets or surpasses the social and economic
development and broader connectivity needs of global businesses
and passengers, and acknowledging the clear need to anticipate and
manage the projected doubling of global air transport capacity by
2030 without unnecessary adverse impacts on system safety,
efficiency, convenience or environmental performance, ICAO has
established five comprehensive Strategic Objectives for the 2014-
2016 triennium.

FIRST FREEDOM
SECOND FREEDOM
THIRD FREEDOM
FOURTH FREEDOM
FIFTH FREEDOM
SIXTH FREEDOM
SEVENTH FREEDOM
EIGHT FREEDOM
NINTH FREEDOM
THE FREEDOM OF AIR
 The freedoms of the air are a set of commercial aviation rights granting
a country's airlines the privilege to enter and land in another
country's airspace, formulated as a result of disagreements over the
extent of aviation liberalization in the Convention on International Civil
Aviation of 1944, known as the Chicago Convention.
 The United States had called for a standardized set of separate air rights
to be negotiated between states, but most other countries were
concerned that the size of the U.S. airlines would dominate air travel if
there were not strict rules.
 The freedoms of the air are the fundamental building blocks of the
international commercial aviation route network.
 The use of the terms "freedom" and "right" confer entitlement to operate
international air services only within the scope of the multilateral and
bilateral treaties that allow them.
The first two freedoms concern the passage of commercial aircraft
through foreign airspace and airports, the other freedoms are about
carrying people, mail and cargo internationally.
The first through fifth freedoms are officially enumerated by international
treaties, especially the Chicago Convention.
 Several other freedoms have been added, and although most are not
officially recognized under broadly applicable international treaties they
have been agreed to by a number of countries.
 The lower-numbered freedoms are relatively universal while the higher-
numbered ones are rarer and more controversial.
Liberal open skies agreements often represent the least restrictive form
of air services agreements and may include many if not all freedoms.
 They are relatively rare but examples include the recent single aviation
markets in the European Union and between Australia and New Zealand.
FIRST FREEDOM OF THE AIR
The Right Or Privilege, In Respect Of Scheduled
International Air Services, Granted By One State To Another
State Or States To Fly Across Its Territory Without Landing
(Also Known As A First Freedom Right).
SECOND FREEDOM OF THE AIR
The Right Or Privilege, In Respect Of Scheduled
International Air Services, Granted By One State To Another
State Or States To Land In Its Territory For Non-traffic
Purposes (Also Known As A Second Freedom Right).

International Air Services, Granted By One State To
Another State To Put Down, In The Territory Of The First

Because Only The First Five "Freedoms" Have Been Officially
Recognized As Such By International Treaty.

  • 65. HISTORY OF IATA IATA was founded in Havana, Cuba, in April 1945. It is the prime vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable, secure and economical air services - for the benefit of the world's consumers. The international scheduled air transport industry is more than 100 times larger than it was in 1945. Few industries can match the dynamism of that growth, which would have been much less spectacular without the standards, practices and procedures developed within IATA. At its founding, IATA had 57 members from 31 nations, mostly in Europe and North America. Today it has some 260 members from 117 nations in every part of the globe. The modern IATA is the successor to the International Air Traffic Association founded in the Hague in 1919 - the year of the world's first international scheduled services.
  • 66. IATA OBJECTIVES: As per the Articles of Association of IATA, the main objectives are: i. To promote safe, regular and economical air transport for the benefit of the people of the world, to foster air commerce and, to study the problems connected therewith; ii. To provide means for collaboration among the air transport enterprises engaged directly or indirectly in international air transport services; iii. To cooperate with the International Civil Aviation Organization and other international organizations; iv. To provide a common platform for travel agencies/tour operators’ v. To promote and develop international tourism.

  • 76. HISTORY OF ICAO  The Convention on International Civil Aviation (also known as Chicago Convention), was signed on 7 December 1944 by 52 States.  Pending ratification of the Convention by 26 States, the Provisional International Civil Aviation Organization (PICAO) was established.  It functioned from 6 June 1945 until 4 April 1947.  By 5 March 1947 the 26th ratification was received.  ICAO came into being on 4 April 1947.  In October of the same year, ICAO became a specialized agency of the United Nations linked to Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • 77. Original version. Signed at Chicago on 7 December 1944 ICAO was originally created to promote the safe and efficient development of civil aviation. One enduring aspect of the Organization's work over the last six decades has been to help States improve civil aviation in their country through projects implemented under ICAO's Technical Cooperation Programme. Since its creation in 1952, the Technical Cooperation Bureau (TCB) has been responsible for the execution of ICAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme advising and assisting States, donors, the private sector and other funding sources in all matters relating to the development of safe and secure civil aviation. To this day the Technical Cooperation Programme remains a permanent priority activity of ICAO which complements the technical role of the Regular Programme by supporting Member States in the implementation of ICAO regulations, policies and procedures. The Technical Cooperation Programme is conducted under the broad policy guidance of the ICAO Assembly and of the Council. Subject to general guidance by the Secretary General, the Technical Cooperation Programme is executed under delegated authority by the Technical Cooperation Bureau (TCB), under its Director.

  • 88. THE FREEDOM OF AIR  The freedoms of the air are a set of commercial aviation rights granting a country's airlines the privilege to enter and land in another country's airspace, formulated as a result of disagreements over the extent of aviation liberalization in the Convention on International Civil Aviation of 1944, known as the Chicago Convention.  The United States had called for a standardized set of separate air rights to be negotiated between states, but most other countries were concerned that the size of the U.S. airlines would dominate air travel if there were not strict rules.  The freedoms of the air are the fundamental building blocks of the international commercial aviation route network.  The use of the terms "freedom" and "right" confer entitlement to operate international air services only within the scope of the multilateral and bilateral treaties that allow them.
  • 89. The first two freedoms concern the passage of commercial aircraft through foreign airspace and airports, the other freedoms are about carrying people, mail and cargo internationally. The first through fifth freedoms are officially enumerated by international treaties, especially the Chicago Convention.  Several other freedoms have been added, and although most are not officially recognized under broadly applicable international treaties they have been agreed to by a number of countries.  The lower-numbered freedoms are relatively universal while the higher- numbered ones are rarer and more controversial. Liberal open skies agreements often represent the least restrictive form of air services agreements and may include many if not all freedoms.  They are relatively rare but examples include the recent single aviation markets in the European Union and between Australia and New Zealand.
