(Jaume Sala). The initial definition of this project consisted on three questions: How can the city administration connect/combine own data sets within the existing IT structure in order to make multidimensional analysis? How can we (the government of Schiedam) combine these datasets with datasets from several stakeholders? And finally, what kind of new information can become available? The objectives of the project were the following: Implement a tool to achieve the visual representation of georeferenced datasets, analyze the possibility to combine multiple datasets in the same graphical representation, and propose a new datasets organization related to smart city indicators and geospatial data.

During the last decade several projects with respect to digital preservation have been funded in Europe by the European Commission and have delivered interesting results. Such projects include community building projects or coordination actions such as ERPANET, Delos2, and Digital Preservation Europe (DPE), but also research projects such as Planets, CASPAR, Shaman, Protage. In December 2009 a new call for digital preservation will be closed, so new projects may start in 2010. One result of all these projects and all the work done is that there is a growing community involved, more organizations and people are aware of the issues, definitely has enhanced the collaboration amongst institutions and universities in Europe, and with the last research projects some potential practical solutions are emerging that could be applied by institutions. How it all will work out in the end is still one of the big questions. For one thing it may have helped to create a good foundation for further collaboration, perhaps even without funding from the European Commission. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the main results of some of these projects, especially Planets, and what issues they try to resolve, and a brief outlook on possible future developments.

Humanities scholars work with unstructured data: information about human culture stored in books, archival records, audiovisual sources and other carriers of information. Traditionally, the data from these various sources were extracted and processed in the mind of the scholar. With the growing availability of these data in digital form, the tasks of extracting and combining information from various datasets becomes mediated by computational tools. In order to support scholars in working with digital data, a high level of transparency is required: scholars want to know exactly where the data originate, how they have been processed and manipulated, and what this means for their results and interpretation. In this lecture I will discuss our experiences in designing the CLARIAH research infrastructure for media studies research, focusing on the requirements regarding the transparency of data and tools.

I gave this presentation to the Sun PASIG (Preservation and Archiving Special Interest Group) in San Francisco, 2009. It gives an overview of the EU co-funded Planets digital preservation project and includes some early discussion of the plans to create a not-for-profit organisation to carry the technology forward beyond the end of the project in mid 2010.

This presentation, part of an extensive practical tutorial on logical and bit-stream preservation using Plato (a preservation planning tool) and EPrints (software for creating digital repositories), reviews preservation planning workflow, shows how to identify requirements using a mindmap approach and then how to upload the output to Plato to run experiments and produce results. The presentation was given as part of module 4 of a 5-module course on digital preservation tools for repository managers, presented by the JISC KeepIt project. Digital archivists from the Universities of Hull (UK), Stanford, and Yale currently are collaborating on an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded project. Born-Digital Collections: An Inter-Institutional Model for Stewardship (AIMS) will produce a common framework for managing born digital archives. Each digital archivist presents a short case study to cover areas of workflow for electronic records: collection development, accessioning, arrangement and description, and discovery and access.

This presentation was delivered during the joint DPE/Planets/CAPAR/nestor training event, ‘The Preservation challenge: basic concepts and practical applications’ (Barcelona, March 2009). It explains how CASPAR aims to solve, from the technical point of view, the problem of accessibility and intelligibility of digital data in the long term.CASPAR approach is presented as an implementation of the OAIS functional model, introducing CASPAR Key Components, i.e. the main building blocks which constitute CASPAR architecture, and giving an overview of their functionalities, their usage and their role in the digital preservation workflow. The objective is to clarify how the digital preservation workflow is realised within CASPAR architecture.

Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability. In this session, participants gained insights about the following: Most common types of AI categories and use cases; Recommended steps to design and implement taxonomies and ontologies, ensuring they evolve effectively and support the organization’s search objectives; Taxonomy and ontology design considerations and best practices; Real-world AI applications that illustrated the value of taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs; and Tools, roles, and skills to design and implement AI-powered search solutions.

With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.
