YOGA (MEANING AND NATURE)
Unit-2 (PhilosophyAnd PsychologyOfYoga)
MEANING AND INTRODUCTION OF
YOGA:
 Yoga (योग) is a group
of physical, mental, and spiritual
practices or disciplines which
originated in ancient India .
 Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which
means ‘to unite or integrate’, yoga is a
5,000-year-old Indian body of knowledge.
Yoga is all about harmonizing the body
with the mind and breath through the
means of various breathing,exercises,yoga
poses and meditation.
 ACCORDINGTO MERRIAMWEBSTER
DICTIONARY:A system of physical postures,
breathing techniques, and sometimes
meditation derived fromYoga but often
practiced independently especially in Western
cultures to promote physical and emotional well-
being .
 Yogas chitta vritti nirodha is Patanjali’s definition
of yoga. It means that yoga is the removing of the
fluctuations of the mind.
Yoga is the stilling of the mind until it rests in a
state of total and utter tranquility, so that one
experiences life as it is: as Reality.
Patanjali'sYoga Sutras
 The literal translation of yogas chitta vritti nirodha is
as follows:
 YOGA = to yoke, to join, to unite
 CHITTA = consciousness
 VRITTI = fluctuations
 NIRODAH = quieting of
 It’s quite impossible to remove the fluctuations of the
mind because the mind is always thinking — that’s
what it does.
 However, what the author of
theYoga Sutras (Patanjali) is teaching us here has to
do with a method of quieting the mind, which is a
system of practices that leads us to mental peace.
According to Vishnupurana - Yoga: Yoga is the
complete union of Jeevatma and Paramatma.
According to the Bhagavad Gita - Siddhasiddho
SamoBhutva Samatvam Yoga High means to
have harmony in all the duality like sorrow
happiness,profit-gain,enemy-friend,cold and
warm.
According To Budhhism :Kushal
Chittagaggata Yoga: means concentration
