Q) What is an Internship?
A) Ask this to Google and it says :
"An internship is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees, called
interns, to work at a firm for a fixed, limited period of time. Interns are usually
undergraduates / Postgraduates / PhD students, and most internships last for any length
of time between four weeks to 12 months".
Lets make it simple for you,
Its a job before the actual job, peek into your career before it actually starts or explore
various domains and choose the best one for you.

During that period, you will have some real responsibilities, you will learn new skills and
utilize your existing ones and probably get paid.
Q) Why you should do an internship ?
A) Lets break it :
Because work experience matters : Getting experience will do wonders
and boost your confidence during your actual job interview.
Apply your classroom knowledge into real life situations : They give
you a way to utilize your theory knowledge, and expand it, by applying it in
solving real life problems.
Find your career path : Internships gives you an opportunity to find your
"to be good at" thing. Its like a test run before you actually start you career and it
also helps you to take decisions and save many years your life.
Opens the next door : The experience that you gather and contacts that you
make will help you in the long run. Also the letter of recommendation will do

wonders during your campus recruitment.
Earn College credits and Money : Some college have made internships
compulsory, others will make it soon. This not only helps you to earn credit
points but also helps you to earn money.
Q) When should you do an internship ?
A) Companies hires intern round the year. So, whenever you get time, go for it.
Q) Who gets an Internship ?
A) Generally, the student who gets an internship has,
Grade Points (40%) - GPA matters very much as it shows the quality and kind
of student you are since high school.
Related Project Experience (40%) - The related research projects in which the

student has shown significant contribution in past.
College Name (10%) - The brand value of your college name matters.
**Luck (10%) - This 10% is compulsory and matters the most.
Q) How to Get an Internship?
A) There are generally two ways :
Procedure 1:
Apply with your Curriculum Vitae (CV) in websites where various companies / institutes
advertise their internship requirements, then wait in the queue like others and get
rejected (90%).
Procedure 2:
Contact them directly through email or LinkedIn, Find out their requirements, Tell them

what you can offer, and get selected (if lucky). This is a tried and tested method.
NOTE:
The real winners never go through the “front door”.
No one gets an extraordinary opportunities by taking the same approach that
everyone else takes.
It’s amazing to me how many people want to land their dream jobs, yet they
expect to get them by submitting a resume online.
That’s not how it works. The name of the game is noticing the ‘unspoken rules’
around you, and giving people what they want before they have to ask you.
Pick a boss, not a company : Finding and Having the right mentor is the real
key. It can save you from years of wasted time and effort.
You can apply for internships at various academic institutes or at reputed companies and
startups.

[UPDATED] 13 points about How to get an Academic
Internship

Students in their second and third year of engineering dreams of getting an internships at
the premier Indian Institute of Technology (known as IIT). These internships are mainly
research oriented which might sometime give you some stipend and research publication
at international journals. Thus, adding a few lines in your CV which will in future help
you in getting placed or pursue a career in your area of interest.
This blog has every small details that one should keep in mind before applying to these
college professors, to increase their chances of getting selected without much hardwork.
Your should start applying for summer as well as winter internships throughout the year,
but chances of getting selected will be maximum right after the current batch of
summer/winter interns leave. This is the time which the professors/ mentors will start
their search for a perfect intern for the next semester break. So, stop thinking much, read
the points and share your internship experience with us.
So, here it goes :
First, create a List of Colleges where you want to apply e.g.( IITs, ISI
Kolkata/Chennai, NITs , IIEST Shibpur, Jadavpur University etc.)
After that, go to their respective Websites -- Department Page -- Faculty List
Page where the contact details (email ids) of every faculty will be present. [ For
Computer Science students kindly note every college has a IT department also,
so apply in both the departments]

NOTE: Every Professor will have an college email id and an Area of Interest. If
possible try to find out their personal email id ( @gmail.com ) that is not given
in their website. It is because some professors don't generally open their college
email ids. So, for this you need to do some google search.
Write an application and mail them along with your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and
Transcripts specifying your area of interest (If any).

Make your Application short, easy to read and understand. They don't have
whole day to read your application. Try not to use fancy words.
Try to make your CV look decent. Do some training in your related field of
interest if don't have to write any thing in your CV, don't put in your family
history in there. Always be to the point. [ Sample CV ]

Try to mail them around 6 AM or 10 AM or 1 PM or 5PM of a Working day.
Chances of your application getting seen will be more.
Note to whom you are sending the application, don’t write Respected Sir/
Madam. Specify either 'Sir' or 'Madam', usually most of the professors are male
so while copy pasting the mails remember to change the Sir to Madam.
Send individual mail to everyone . Don't send it in a bulk to everyone.
Remember to write Thank you and Regards with your full name below.
Keep sending mails once in every two months until they accept you or reject you
completely. Best time to apply : February onward ( for summer internships )
and mid August onward ( for winter internships ).
Make a habit of checking your mail after every 3 hours when you apply for an
internship.
If they reply back positively, please don’t ignore them.

Example :
SUBJECT : Application for Summer Undergraduate Research Internship
2016
Respected Sir,
I am Your Name, a 3rd year B.tech student at Your College Name in the department
of Computer Science Engineering.
I am writing this application for the Summer Undergraduate Research Internship
program 2016 and would like to work on a project under your mentorship at IIT
Kharagpur.
My past experience is in the fields for IoTs, Sensor Networks, Image Processing and
Pattern Recognition, details is in my CV attached below.

I am comfortable in the areas of computer science.
Therefore, it is my request to kindly give me a chance to work on a project and expand my
practical knowledge.
Thank You and Regards,
Your Name.
Please find the attachments below :
1. My Curriculum Vitae .
2. Marksheet ( 1st sem to 4th sem ).
3. Recommendation Letter from Your College.

If you do not have prior experience in the pre-requisites they need, read the
subject from Youtube and try to make a PROJECT on it. This is enough to
convince them that you have practical knowledge over the given domain.

Company Internships :
Getting a company internship is a bit difficult, unless you are from
top tier colleges. So, before you apply to any Company or Startup
for internship, make sure you are done with few academic
Internships or worked on projects under some college
professors or done some industrial training in your related field
and you must have the skills required for that internship. This will
really help your application. In this blog you will find few
important points which you need to remember while applying at
your dream company.
I understand you are on a hurry, but the most important
thing in an internship is "Patience" . Be ready to get
weary, because completing the internship is not going to be
that easy. I am not trying to scare you, but just a piece of

advice from experience. So, be prepared.
If you are in first or second year of your engineering, then I
would suggest you to have some experience on the latest
technologies and be regular with 'competitive coding'.
Check their requirements and what you can learn from

Here are some internship experience at startups and
well as at fortune 500 companies. More links are provided

The recruiters or HR managers will then select your CV
first so, make sure it matches with the requirements they

a demo application format to get an idea about how to
approach them.
After your CV is selected, mostly they (Startups) will mail
you directly regarding a telephonic interview.

Reputed Companies that come to your campus to offer
internship position don’t directly mail you, they contact
the College Training and Placement Cell. The Training
and Placement Officer (TPO) will most probably select the
top 5-10 students of a department based on merits or

procedure varies from company to company.
After you clear their Aptitude Exam , you will be called for
an Personal/Telephonic interview.
In the interview they will be mainly interested to know
about your past projects and work experience. Subjects
like Data Structure, Algorithms, Operating Systems and
DBMS are very important.

Another way is to contact the HR Managers of Companies
is through LinkedIn. Almost every professional HR
managers are always active in LinkedIn. So build your
profile, Connect with them, if lucky you may get a chance
some day.

Winter is coming and now the days will be cold and short, but this winter doesn’t have to
suck if you know what you want to get out of it. Its time to show employers how hungry
you are to get a winter internship and figure out what your goals are in getting an

You know that you could be productive, gaining useful work experience which will in
shape your future and help you getting placed in top MNCs. So leave the couch and think
about what industries, areas and subjects interest you. Winter break is an especially good
