Uber is an American company that operates a ride-hailing app allowing users to request rides from drivers. It was founded in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick. The app connects riders to drivers who use their personal vehicles. Riders enter their destination and payment is automatic through the app. Uber takes 20% of fares and gives 80% to drivers. Uber has raised billions in funding rounds but owns no vehicles. As an HR manager, strategies to generate profits could include optimizing driver incentives and bonuses while continuing to invest in recruiting and developing talent.

13. Feedback on training.
“When I started of course I was shown how the app worked and that
was pretty much all there was to it. There was a cursory attempt to tell
me things that I knew more about than the person telling me that had
to do with customer service which should be an intuitive matter. They
have little or no sense that the customer is ever anything but god and
unfortunately a lot of customers behave in a manner that is distinctly
ungodly. Usually that is on weekend nights when the consumption of
alcohol in the city exceeds the consumption of water. That is the
problem with people trying to tell you how to do things that they
themselves have little or no experience doing, A chronic problem with
Uber is the notion of people trying to tell you how to work with the
public, this coming from people who spend their day in a cubicle or at a
computer and who have little or no contact with actual human beings,
much less behind the wheel of a car.”
- An Uber Driver’s Feedback
14. Performance Appraisal
• Uber takes feedback on drivers from customers. If feedback
is to be effective, it needs to be delivered and recorded in
real-time. Customers are asked to rate the drivers and the
service delivered by the drivers after their ride.
• Uber’s three main performance metrics are the driver’s
rating, how many ride the driver accepts, and how many
times a driver cancels a ride.
• Uber provides incentive in the form of business grants to
the drivers for accomplishing a particular target. For
example a driver gets Rs 6000 BG for earnings of 2300.
