Motivation is the foundation of all athletic effort and accomplishment. Without your desire and determination to improve your sports performances, all of the other mental factors, confidence, intensity, focus, and emotions, are meaningless. To become the best athlete you can be, you must be motivated to do what it takes to maximize your ability and achieve your goals.
2. INTRODUCTION
Motivation :- Motivation is derived from the word ‘Mover’
which means the‘move’. Motivation is the process by
which a man is inspired to seek the goal.
“Motivation is an internal factor that arouses, directs, and
integrates a person’s behavior”- Murray.
“Motivation is any condition that might energise and
direct our actions”- Crooks.
Types of Motivation :- It is of two types:-
1 Internal Motivations
2 External Motivations
3. 1-Internal Motivation :- This motivation is within
an individual and guides them to perform better
to satisfy ones own personal feeling. Internal
motivation depends upon basic needs like
biological needs, social needs, psychological
needs and personal needs etc.
4. 2-External Motivation :- This Motivation depends
upon environmental factors. External motivation
has great impact on an individual performance. It
is of various types:-
5. i-Reward :- Rewards are of various types and help in
achieving the goals like cash prize, trophy, job, social
status etc.
ii-Punishment :- Punishment has its own impact on
performance to certain limit. Punishments are of various
types like physical punishment, blame social withdraw,
economical punishment etc.
6. iii-Active Participation :- Active involvement
develops leadership qualities which encourage
one to do continuous progress.
iv-Equipment and Surroundings :- Modern
equipments and healthy surroundings act as
motivating factors for high performance.
7. Motivation Techniques in Sports :- Motivation factors in
sports are like :-
(i) Healthy Environment :- Healthy, clean and hygienic
environment motivates the players to participate to
maximum level.
(ii) Good Apparatus and good playfields :- Good quality
apparatus and good playfields improve the performance
of player.
(iii) Coaching and Guidance :- Coaching and guidance
during activity has an important role in performance.
Good coaching skills improve the performance. It should
involve good teaching methods.
8. (iv) Interaction Between and Team-Mates :- A
healthy interaction between own team-mates
improves performance during competition.
(v) Safety Means :- Proper safety means help
players to perform to optimum level thus,
performance is improved.
(vi) Competition :- Healthy and good sports
competition is a motivating factor for improving
performance.
