Satkhira Flood Situation-2011Short briefing onCauses of flood and damage assessment Rishilpi Development Project
Introduction Bangladesh is situated in the south Asian sub-continent. Because of its unique geographical location and topography, it is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. Approximately 20 to 25% of Bangladesh’s territory is inundated during the monsoon season. Such flooding provides fertile agricultural land and the floodplains in the country are densely populated and intensely utilized. On the other hand, at least 50 to 70% of the country’s territory is exposed to intermittent extreme flooding that has far-reaching negative impacts on the national economy.. Rishilpi Development Project
Country situation Heavy monsoon rains have caused several major rivers in Bangladesh to burst their banks, displacing thousands and affecting nearly a million people in all Nine river monitoring stations out of 73 operated by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) across Bangladesh have reported dangerous water levels and another 19 say more flooding could be imminent. ( Source: DMB 29 August 2011) Rishilpi Development Project
Satkhira : Cause of flood The heavy monsoon downpour, and onrush water from upstream (Jessore area) by synchronization of flood-peaks of the major rivers are generally considered to be the main causes of the floods. Rishilpi Development Project
Satkhira flood : Underlying cause Some underlying factors also deserve serious consideration as possible contributors to the recent floods: ,[object Object]
Change in the base level of the rivers due to	local sea level rise and subsidence, River bed aggradations due to siltation and damming of rivers, ,[object Object]
	deforestation in the upstream region,
 	Unplanned embankment for shrimp culture
Population growth Rishilpi Development Project
