The document discusses staffing levels and full-time equivalent (FTE) calculations for the hematology department. It details that there are 4 full-time positions for hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis testing across all three shifts, plus two 16-hour per week part-time positions across all shifts. Additionally, there are 4 full-time special coagulation positions that work Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm. It provides the calculations for determining the annual hours and FTEs for full-time staff as well as part-time staff.
2. Department Employees
• Hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis – 4
full time positions for all three shifts and two
positions totaling 16 hours per position for all
three shifts
• Special Coagulations – 4 full time positions
that run from 7a.m. – 3p.m. Mon – Fri.
3. FTE Calculations
• 1 person x 8 hr/day x 5 day/week x 52
weeks/year = 2080 hrs per year
• 12 shifts per day: 2080 x 12 = 24,960 hours
per year
• 2 part time positions: 8 hours x 16hrs/week x
52 weeks/year = 832 hours per year
• 832 hours x 6 positions = 4992 hours per year
• Special coagulation: 2080 hrs/yr x 4 8320
hrs/yr

Notes de l'éditeur
The particular department this system will focus on will be the hematology department. This department focuses on three primary areas of testing which are: hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis. There are two subspecialties which are special coagulation and immunology. The lab operates 7 days a week and 24 hours a day for routine and stat testing. The special coagulations part of the lab operates Mon. – Fri. from 7-3 (Laboratory Service Departments, 2012).
There are calculations that can be run to justify the amount of hours needed to run this department. This can be done using (FTE) Full Time Equivalent calculations. Based on this there are 3 departments that run 24 hours a day. This would require 4 full time positions for all three of these departments per shift and 4 positions that would require 16 hours for each department per shift. (How to Calculate FTE’s, 2012)
