One of the core principles of the agile movement was to shift the focus of software development to creating more valuable software, sooner. It can be expected that the managing of software in an agile environment would put value at its heart; over old, industrial parameters like scope, budget, time. Informed management decisions to maximize value cannot be made without collecting evidence of it. Enter the need of evidence-based decision-making, which is a great start in bringing the Scrum Stance to the managerial domain, leading to a new management culture, Empirical Management. Gunther Verheyen uses ‘Evidence-Based Management’ to go into an exploration of empirical management as the best fit for the age of agile. Gunther is director of the Professional Series at Scrum.org and a partner of Ken Schwaber.

In these past few years, agile methods became a vital part in the software development process, but are they really applicable for all types of projects and team sizes? A while ago, our company changed the way we approach project development because the team noticed that standard SCRUM-ish methods aren't fully compatible for us, so we developed our own, modified version of agile. In this talk, I will showcase how powerful this approach is and how you can use it to find problems, and eventually resolve them.

Leading a several thousand people organization towards Agile is not an easy task. It is a complex challenge where there is a very low predictability of success of your change initiatives. In this talk I will give you some theoretical background on how to successfully approach change in your company. I will exemplify this with the story of our agile change at Ericsson, one of the world’s largest SW companies. I will talk about our change initiatives, the desired and undesired things that emerged from them and how we acted upon them. This will help you understand the nature of an organizational change towards Agile and how to successfully approach it yourself.

Architecture efforts can be sidelined without the engagement and trust of software developers and project managers, yet architects do not always see collaboration and service as part of their role. Lack of collaboration and service on the part of an architect can result in an architect’s * uncertainty about whether and how well products are being used or delivering value * products and guidance being “worked around” rather than incorporated * rigid and less-than-effective use of stakeholder-related architecture practices This presentation illustrates the importance of partnering in the context of architecture. We define partnering as “the extent to which architecture stakeholders maintain clear, cooperative roles and maximize the value that they deliver and receive.” We will also discuss how to build on existing partner relationships to increase engagement and trust. This presentation was given at SATURN 2015 (http://www.sei.cmu.edu/saturn/2015)
