Major Overall SCC Responsibilities:
 Work in a diverse culture with a strong international student population and
students from many ethnic, economic and social backgrounds

educate and motivate students in regards to remaining in college and its effect on

 Report to the Dean of Health Occupations, Physical Education, Athletics and

 Supervise and manage Shoreline Community College’s Gym and Fitness Center

SCC Team and Program Successes:
Shoreline Community College had won 7 NWAACC Region Championships from the
mid-1960s until January of 2007. Shoreline won 6 regionals from January of 2007 to
November 2013 under Athletic Director Doug Palmer’s guidance and supervision.
 Men’s Basketball – Won NWAACC Northern Region for 2nd time in school history
 Women’s Volleyball – Won back to back NWAACC Northern Region titles for the
first time in school history
 Men’s Soccer – Won NWAACC Northern Region for 2nd time in school history
 Softball – Won NWAACC Northern Region for the 2nd time in school history
 Women’s Soccer won back to back NWAACC Northern Region Championships
for the first time in school history.
 Women’s Soccer finished 3rd in the NWAACC Final Four twice in back to back
years
 Men’s Basketball – Went 3-1 at NWAACC Men’s Basketball Championship for
the best showing in school history (Consolation Championship, 4th place)
 Baseball – Recorded 23-23 record in 2013, the first .500 record for baseball team
in 23 years
 Men’s Tennis finished 2nd in the NWAACC Championship 3 times in 7 years.
 Women’s Tennis had doubles champions in the NWAACC for the 2nd time in
school history
 Athletic Department tripled fundraising efforts under Doug Palmer’s guidance and
work
 Athletic Department graduation and retention rates improved during this period
 Athletic Department generated $4,000,000 in revenue for the college annually
while costing the college about $600,000 for a 3.4 million dollar profit.
 All SCC athletic teams were able to have “Live” internet game broadcasts of
home games plus a “YouTube” site devoted for storage and viewing of all home
games and many away games
 Developed athletic academic clubs to honor student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or
higher. Green Club (3.00 GPA to 3.49), Gold Club (3.50 GPA to 3.99), Dolphin
Club (4.00 GPA)

 Supervise 9 sports to include: Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Men’s

  • 3.  Supervise campus recreational and intramural programs  Research and pursue outside grants for physical education, recreation, wellness and athletics as available  Maintain and develop campus athletic, physical education and recreation facilities and work with Director of Facilities on long term projects and plans to enhance athletic and recreational facilities  Work with the City of Seattle Parks, City of Shoreline Parks and Recreation and the Shoreline School District to use outdoor facilities for SCC Athletics  Work with and support students in athletics, physical education, intramurals and recreation, student government and general population  Work with SCC student government on the athletic budget each year to garner and maintain resources for varsity athletics, intramurals, wellness and recreation for the campus  Report each year to the SCC Board of Trustees and upper administration of the college the FTE generation athletics brings to the college and revenue generated by athletics for the college (estimated $4,000,000 at last count)  Ensure Title IX regulations are followed and prepare Federal Title IX report each year  Work with academic counselors to monitor and maintain athletic eligibility and academic progress to finish a degree or certificate at the college  Hire and supervise coaches, part-time intramural instructors and other employees plus orient and mentor new employees to the department  Evaluate full-time and part-time staff on an annual basis  Support college endeavors at public events such as festivals, award presentations, ceremonies, scholarship drives, etc. to develop positive community relations  Facilitate contracts and development between the college and the local community for use of facilities and programs at SCC  Represent the college for athletic meetings and external gatherings with outside groups  Provide leadership for curriculum development of Physical Education classes by full-time and associate faculty  Develop and administer fundraising plans for department, teams and other specific groups inside department to support scholarships, travel, equipment, etc.  Develop and maintain class schedules along with teaching assignments for PE faculty and Recreation instructors  Write and edit manuals for student-athletes, coaches and other members of the department staff to educate and remind of proper athletic policies and procedures  Supervise and manage Shoreline Community College’s Gym and Fitness Center  Maintain and develop athletic website along with separate websites for intramurals, vitality and wellness  Mange and develop social media platforms to market and promote athletic, recreation/intramural and wellness programs
  • 4. SCC Team and Program Successes: Shoreline Community College had won 7 NWAACC Region Championships from the mid-1960s until January of 2007. Shoreline won 6 regionals from January of 2007 to November 2013 under Athletic Director Doug Palmer’s guidance and supervision.  Men’s Basketball – Won NWAACC Northern Region for 2nd time in school history  Women’s Volleyball – Won back to back NWAACC Northern Region titles for the first time in school history  Men’s Soccer – Won NWAACC Northern Region for 2nd time in school history  Softball – Won NWAACC Northern Region for the 2nd time in school history  Women’s Soccer won back to back NWAACC Northern Region Championships for the first time in school history.  Women’s Soccer finished 3rd in the NWAACC Final Four twice in back to back years  Men’s Basketball – Went 3-1 at NWAACC Men’s Basketball Championship for the best showing in school history (Consolation Championship, 4th place)  Baseball – Recorded 23-23 record in 2013, the first .500 record for baseball team in 23 years  Men’s Tennis finished 2nd in the NWAACC Championship 3 times in 7 years.  Women’s Tennis had doubles champions in the NWAACC for the 2nd time in school history  Athletic Department tripled fundraising efforts under Doug Palmer’s guidance and work  Athletic Department graduation and retention rates improved during this period  Athletic Department generated $4,000,000 in revenue for the college annually while costing the college about $600,000 for a 3.4 million dollar profit.  All SCC athletic teams were able to have “Live” internet game broadcasts of home games plus a “YouTube” site devoted for storage and viewing of all home games and many away games  Developed athletic academic clubs to honor student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or higher. Green Club (3.00 GPA to 3.49), Gold Club (3.50 GPA to 3.99), Dolphin Club (4.00 GPA) Athletics:  Supervise 9 sports to include: Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Men’s Tennis and Women’s Tennis  Work within a moderately funded program to maximize program potential  Hire and supervise athletic coaches plus orient and mentor new coaches  Raise Funds – Ticket sales (both game and seasonal), concessions, sponsorships, signage, fundraising events  Help develop and support individual team fundraising events and campaigns  Gain approval for all newly developed fundraising projects through the Financial Service Office and the SCC Foundation
  • 5.  Maintain Title IX compliance in all aspects of athletics and other areas of department  Develop and maintain a brand for “SCC Athletics” that creates an identity for the department and can be recognized on the campus and in the community  Brand athletic department with program and team logos for recognizable identities on the campus, the local area and regional community  Market and promote athletic program to local and regional areas plus national exposure when possible  Work with coaches on recruiting visits of student-athletes to “Meet and Greet” potential player and family  Public speaker to local and regional area to promote athletic department and college  Develop social media plan and implement the use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Foursquare and other platforms for marketing of athletic programs and other programs for recreation and wellness  Prepare media releases and distribute to local news and community blogs, Facebook and other social media sites that athletics or the college uses  Update and maintain campus athletic website and campus athletic news page  Update and maintain Recreation, Intramural and Wellness websites plus the Vitality Program Facebook page for the college and the local community  Developed Green, Gold and Dolphin Academic Clubs for student-athletes with 3.00 GPA or higher and promote winners to campus, community and regionally  Developed athletic budgets and presented to Student Government for approval  Merge college athletic budget, student athletic funds and fundraised monies into one usable budget to meet the needs of the department  Supervise and maintain over 50 athletic related budgets in three major fund sources plus several minor funding sources.  Approve travel and purchasing requests by teams  Approve sport team schedules and schedule games as necessary  Hire and work with officials for all team home games  Maintain supervision for gym and fitness center to ensure safe participation  Work with SCC Foundation on college events such as Homecoming and the Foundation Breakfast plus coordinate athletic fundraisers with the Foundation.  Work with City of Shoreline Parks and Recreation, City of Seattle Parks and Shoreline School District on renting and reserving outdoor facilities for SCC practice and games  Supervise game management at all home games  Facilitate physical upgrades for athletic game management to include clocks, shot clocks, scoreboards, rented facilities, field surfaces, game tables, etc.  Reconcile and deposit tickets and concession sales from games and events  Building scheduler for physical education, athletics, recreation/intramurals, student clubs and rental groups  Develop and administer summer camp programs and continuing education classes as fundraisers for the athletic department  Attend summer fairs to market and promote summer athletic camps to community
