This slide is fruitful for those research scholars who are entering in the field of Music Research. Here clear explanation about concept of research, purpose of research etc, with easy examples related to music.

2. Concept of Research
Research is the process to generate knowledge through
scientific methods. It could be described as the art and
science of exploration, enquiry, experimentation,
measurement, data collection, documentation, analysis
and testing hypothesis. Through knowledge research
provides perspectives to the past and the present, and
opens up new directions for the future. It converts facts
and data into information, information into insights,
insights into theory and theory into knowledge. Subject
requires us to go beyond our personal knowledge and
experience through Research.
3. Research….
is defined as a scientific and systematic search for
information on a specific topic.
is careful investigation or inquiry especially through
search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.
a movement from the unknown to the known.
a systematic search for truth and knowledge.
through research, new and original information, ideas
about the world we live in, are obtained.
4. Purpose of Research
The main purpose of research is enlightenment of the
human mind and to find out hidden truths which have not
been discovered as yet. The purpose of research is to
discover answers to questions through the application of
scientific proceedings. All research aim at increasing the
available body of knowledge.
5. Purpose of Research
Develop New Theories - Bhatkhande ji developed the
theory of raga classification on the basis of Thata.
Testing Preexisting Theories – Origin and development of
Tabla instruments.
Solving Problems - Problem solving is also an aim of
research. In the field of humanities and social science
most of the researches are based on solving the problems
by providing solutions.
Confirming Facts - in the field of music lot of researches
have been proved and established the utility of Music as a
therapy.
6. Motivation in Research
Desire to get a research degree along with its
consequential benefits.
Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved
problems.
Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work.
Desire to be of service to society.
Desire to get respectability.
7. Characteristics of Research
Systematic
Gathers new knowledge
Logical
Accuracy
Research is patient and unhurried
Research requires courage
Verifiable evidence
Research is carefully recorded and reported
Research maintains rigorous standards
8. Importance of knowing how to conduct Research
The knowledge of methodology provides good
training especially to the new research worker and
enables him to do better research. It helps him to
develop disciplined thinking to observe the field
objectively. Hence, those aspiring for careerism in
research must develop the skill of using research
techniques and must thoroughly understand the logic
behind them. It enables us to make intelligent
decisions concerning problems facing us in practical
at different points of time.
9. Definitions of Research
Martin Shuttle worth – “In the broadest sense of the
word the definition of research includes any gathering of
data, information and facts for the advancement of
knowledge.”
Creswell –“Research is a process of steps used to collect
and analyze information to increase our understandings of
a topic or issue.”
Prof. M. Verma – “Research is an intellectual activity
which brings to light new knowledge and corrects
previous errors and misconceptions and ads in an orderly
way to existing corpus of knowledge.”
10. Cont…
Hyllegard, Mood, and Morrow - The main goal of
research is the gathering and interpreting of information to
answer questions.
Tuckman - Research is a systematic attempt to provide
answers to questions.
Finally it may be stated that research is often defined as
scientific thinking and an art of scientific investigation.
Research is thus an original contribution to the existing
stock of knowledge through objective and systematic
methods of findings the solution to a problem.
11. Research Methods vs. Methodology
A research method is a technique for (or way of
proceeding in)gathering evidence” while "methodology is
a theory and analysis of how research does or should
proceed". Research Methodology says that how to do or
conduct research systematically & scientifically. Research
Methodology not only provides the knowledge of various
types of methods & techniques for sampling, data
collection, data analysis & report writing etc, but also
guides that which particular method or technique for
sampling/data collection/data analysis should be used or
not & why should /shouldn't do so.
12. Cont….
Research methodology has many dimensions and research
methods do constitute a part of the research methodology.
The scope of research methodology is wider than that of
research methods. Thus, when we talk of research
methodology we not only talk of the research methods but
also consider the logic behind the methods we use in the
context of our research study and explain why we are
using a particular method or technique and why we are not
using others so that research results are capable of being
evaluated either by the researcher himself or by others.
13. Cont…
Why a research study has been undertaken, how the
research problem has been defined, in what way and why
the hypothesis has been formulated, what data have been
collected and what particular method has been adopted,
why particular technique of analyzing data has been used
and a host of similar other questions are usually answered
when we talk of research methodology concerning a
research problem or study.
