What is Career Exploration?
•Many of the critical choices individuals make about
their careers are made prior to entering the workforce
on a paid basis.
•Very early in our lives, our parents and teachers begin
to narrow our alternatives and lead us in certainto narrow our alternatives and lead us in certain
directions.
•The careers of our parents, their aspirations for their
children and their financial sources are crucial factors
in determining our perception of what careers are open
to us.

What is Career Exploration?, Contd.,
•The exploration period ends for most of us in our
mid-twenties as we make the transition from
college/university to work.
•From an organizational standpoint, this stage has little
relevance since it occurs prior to employment.relevance since it occurs prior to employment.
•However, this period is not irrelevant because it is a
time when a number of expectations about one’s
career are developed, many of which are unrealistic.
•Such expectations may lie dormant (hidden) for years
and then pop up later to frustrate both the employee and
the employer.

Five-Stage Career Exploration
Following the five-stage career exploration model will
help students connect their educational experienceswith
their future goals as they relate to academic and
career decisions. Students will:
 Identify values, interests and skills
 Select a major and possible future career and/or Select a major and possible future career and/or
educational paths
 Define and refine goals
 Become involved in experiences, activities and events
throughout their college years in preparation for future
career opportunities and aspirations

Stage 1: First Year - Realize your Potentials
Define academic and career goals; assess
skills, interests, and values
1. View what can I do with this major?

3. Become a student-affiliate member of a professional
organization
