Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium grows on your ovaries, bowel, and the tissues lining your pelvis. It’s unusual for endometrial tissue to spread beyond your pelvic region, but it’s not impossible. Endometrial tissue growing outside of your uterus is known as an endometrial implant.

2. Endometriosis is the most common cause of
pelvic pain in women between age 10 and 50
years old
It is one of the top 3causes of Female
Infertility.
3. Endometriosis occurs when tissue
resembling the lining of the uterus (or
womb) grows outside the uterus on
other organs or structures in the
body. Most often, endometriosis is
found on the :
• Lining of the Pelvic cavity
• Tissues that hold the uterus in
place
• Ovaries
• Outer surface of the Uterus
• Fallopian tubes
Other sites for growth can include
the vagina, cervix, vulva, bowel,
bladder or rectum. In rare cases,
endometriosis has been found in
other parts of the body such as the
lungs, brain and skin.
4. Who is
susceptible?
The average woman is 27 and has several years
searching for the cause of her pain and/or
infertility before receiving the diagnosis of
endometriosis.
Approximately 176 million women and girls
worldwide suffer from endometriosis.
5. Main symptoms
• Painful menstruation
• Pain during/after sex
• Painful bowel
movements

• Chromic Pelvic Pain
and Lower Back
Pain
• Fatigue
• Diarrhea,
constipation and

6. Possible
causes of
Endometrios
is:
• Genetically inherited
• Issues in embryonic development
• Other causes may include stress, dioxins,
xenoestrogens are not valid concepts of origin, but
theoretically could aggravate symptoms
7. Treatments for
Endometriosis
1. Laparoscopy
Excision surgery only has 7%- 8% recurrence rate as opposed to ablation
that has a 44-60% recurrence rate (within 1st year)
2. Pain Medicines
Over the counter medicines as well as prescription pain relievers
3. Non- conventional Methods
Diet & Nutrition, acupuncture, exercise, naturopathy, aromatherapy,
osteopathy, chiropractic treatment, herbs etc.
4. Birth control pills/shot
Decreases the amount of menstrual flow which may decrease the
pain but does not eradicate the disease
8. Women at average endometrial cancer risk
At this time, there are no screening tests or exams to find endometrial
cancer early in women who are at average endometrial cancer risk and have
no symptoms.
Awareness is the key, at menopause, all women should be told about the
risks and symptoms of endometrial cancer and strongly encouraged to
report any vaginal bleeding, discharge, or spotting to their doctor.
Women should talk to their doctors about getting regular pelvic exams. A
pelvic exam can find some cancers, including some advanced uterine
cancers, but it is not very effective in finding early endometrial cancers.
The Pap test, which screens women for cervical cancer, can occasionally
find some early endometrial cancers, but it’s not a good test for this type of
cancer.
9. The way out
There is currently no cure
for endometriosis,
but there are treatments
that can help manage it
10. Awareness is the key
