Gender Equality and Covid 19
MDG 3 and SDG 5
Women Empowerment
Relationship between Gender Equality and
Women Empowerment
Gender Equality and Women Empowerment:
Global Scenario
• Gender is socially-constructed roles and responsibilities that
societies consider appropriate for men and women.
• Gender Equality is the measurable equal
representation of men and women, equal power
and opportunities for men and women.
• Gender equality does not imply that men and
women are same but they have equal value
and should be accorded equal treatment.
• Across every sphere, from health to the economy,
security to social protection, the impacts of COVID-19
are exacerbated for women and girls simply by virtue of
their sex.
• Women play a disproportionate role in responding to
the virus, including as frontline healthcare workers and
carers at home.
• Women’s unpaid care work has increased significantly
as a result of school closures and the increased needs
of older people.
• Gender-based violence is increasing exponentially.
Many women are being forced to ‘lockdown’ at
home with their abusers.
To build a more just and resilient world it is imperative to
ENSURE WOMEN’S EQUAL REPRESENTATION IN ALL
COVID-19 RESPONSE PLANNING AND DECISION-
MAKING
• Eliminate gender disparity in all levels of education
For the universal realization of gender equality, it may be
necessary to address certain areas like:
• Violence against girls and women
• Men’s and women’s unequal opportunities in the labor
market
• Gender-based discrimination in law and practice
• The unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work
• Women’s limited control over property and assets
• Women’s unequal representation in public and private
decision making
It is important to promote the total and equitable
participation of both men and women in efforts aimed at
improving poverty reduction, food security and
sustainability of rural development.
Gender equality in education, employment, and political
participation as these are very important vehicle for
women to reach their empowerment and to exert
their rights.
• End all forms of discrimination against all women and
girls everywhere.
• Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and
girls in the public and private spheres, including
trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.
There are still gross inequalities in access to paid
employment in some regions, and significant gaps
between men and women in the labour market.
Sexual violence and exploitation, unequal division of
unpaid care and domestic work, and discrimination in
public decision making, all remain huge barriers.
• End to discrimination against women and girls everywhere.
• Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health,
and affording women equal rights to economic resources
such as land and property, are vital targets .
• Encouraging more women leaders across all regions will
help strengthen policies and legislation for greater gender
equality.
• Feticide and infanticide
• Violence against women
• Access to healthcare
• Professional obstacles
• Political participation
• Access to education
• Educational attainment
Why Gender Equality and Women Empowerment ?
In 2019,women only held 28 per cent of managerial positions
worldwide.

• Women Empowerment and Gender Equality are
seperate but closely related concepts.
• Gender equality means that men and women have
equal power and equal opportunities for financial
independence, education, and personal
development. ... Women's empowerment is a critical
aspect of achieving gender equality.
• Targeting gender equality and women empowerment is
not only important from the perspective of realizing
women’s rights but is also for smart economics.
Economies grow faster when gender equality is
advanced; less people remain in poverty, and overall
well-being increases.
• Guaranteeing the rights of women and giving them
opportunities to reach their full potential is critical not only
for attaining gender equality, but also for meeting a wide
range of international development goals.
• Empowered women and girls contribute to the health and
productivity of their families, communities, and countries,
creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone.
• Gender equality is a human right, but our world faces a
persistent gap in access to opportunities and decision-
making power for women and men.
• Globally, women have fewer opportunities for economic
participation than men, less access to basic and higher
education, greater health and safety risks, and less political
representation.
• Globally, no country has fully attained gender equality.
Scandinavian countries like Iceland, Norway, Finland, and
Sweden lead the world in their progress toward closing the
gender gap.
• The greatest gender gaps are identified primarily in the
Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.
• However, a number of countries in these regions, including
Lesotho, South Africa, and Sri Lanka outrank the United
States in gender equality.
