2. HealthCare Academy
Objectives
At the completion of this lesson, the EMT Students will be able to:
Learn the functions of skeletal System.
Differentiate between Axial and Appendicular skeleton.
Differentiate between cranial and facial bones.
Describe the structure of vertebral Column.
Identify the bones forming thoracic cage.
Name the bones of upper limb.
Name the bones of lower limb.
List 206 bones of the body.
3. Skeletal System HealthCare Academy
Parts of skeletal System
Bones (skeleton)
Joints
Cartilages
Ligaments (bone to bone)
Tendon (bone to muscle)
5. HealthCare Academy
Axial Skeleton
Axial Skeleton supports and protects organs of
head, neck and trunk. It consists of:-
• Skull (cranium and facial bones)
• Hyoid Bone (anchors tongue and muscles associated with swallowing)
• Vertebral Column (vertebrae and disks)
• Bony Thorax (ribs and sternum)
7. HealthCare Academy
Appendicular Skeleton
Appendicular skeleton includes bone of limbs and bones
that anchor them to the axial skeleton. They are:-
• Pectoral girdle (clavicle, scapula)
• Upper limbs (arms)
• Pelvic girdle (sacrum, coccyx)
• Lower limbs (legs)
• Articulation-where joints meet, connect, and are formed.
17. HealthCare Academy
Hyoid Bone (1 Bone)
• Hyoid bone is also known as lingual bone.
• It is a horse-shoe shaped bone.
• Situated in the anterior midline of the
• neck between the chin and thyroid cartilage.
Hyoid Bone
Larynx
18. HealthCare Academy
Auditory Ossicles (6Bones)
Auditory ossicles are the
three smallest bones in
the human body.
The term “Ossicles”
literally means
“tiny bones” and
commonly refers to the
auditory ossicles, though
the term may refer to any
small bone throughout
the body.
19. Vertebral Column (26Bones) HealthCare Academy
Functions
o Axial support for the body
and balance.
o Protect spinal cord.
o Flexible motion.
20. HealthCare Academy
Cervical Vertebrae
• 7 in numbers
• Identified as C-1 to C-7
• First 2 are called atlas
and axis because they
perform different functions
21. Cervical Region HealthCare Academy
• Neck region.
• Protects the brain stem and the
spinal cord.
• Support the skull.
• Very mobile:-
o Is responsible for movement of the head.
o Allows for a wide range of movement
42. HealthCare Academy
• Femur is the largest, longest and
Strongest bone in the body.
• Head fits in Socket (acetabulum)
of pelvis.
• Neck is weakest.
• Greater trochanter.
• Distal: Lateral & medial condyles
and epicondyles.
• Patella: sesmoid bone.
