2. PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.

3. FILMING
Filming was definitely the least fun part of the process, I
enjoyed the shots I was able to film in the studio, but outside
filming it by myself, trying to find locations and props was
difficult, but I made do.
For the first shot in the video with the phone and the shots
with the box, I filmed those in the studio and used LED lights
only to light the scene, which worked quite well because I
liked the idea of having one predominant light source coming
from one side of the screen and the other half fading into
darkness.

4. TECHNICAL
Most of the video was shot on my phone, just a basic HD
1080p phone camera, nothing special. The focus was quite
bad on it, but I was able to fix that by lowering the brightness
of the shot before shooting it, which was fine because I knew
I was going to colour correct in premier anyway.
I used a tripod and a studio camera for the box and phone
shots, which for allowed me to smoothly swipe up and down
the frame and on the box opening shot especially it allowed
me to quickly swipe left to right smoothly which I liked.
All the footage shot on my phone was handheld, besides a
few shots which I just propped my phone up against
something and entered the frame so the shot was steady.

5. LOGISTICAL
We booked a studio for around November 1st (I think), which
allowed me to shoot the phone and box scenes.
Outside of college, I searched but couldn’t find any locations
I liked, so I shot the rest of the video in my house, besides
from a few b-roll shots which I took just while walking around
in random locations. Most weren’t included, but a few were.
When taking the b-roll footage I mostly waited until it was
about 5-6pm so it wasn’t fully dark yet, but it wasn’t bright
like during the day either as I read online it would make
Day4Nnite colour correction look better.

6. PERSONNEL
The shots I filmed in the studio, Luke helped me with, but
everything else I filmed by myself. I had originally planned to
get help to film outside of college but that didn’t pan out.
Having to film most of it by myself forced me to think of
creative solutions to shots I had planned that wouldn’t be
possible filming solo. I used more handheld shots and shots
where I just propped the camera against something so I
could enter the frame without it looking shaky.

7. PLANNING
The planning definitely helped with coming up with the vibe
and certain shots for the video, but I did go off the planning a
bit because I had originally planned to film it with help, so
some of the shots I thought of, were with that in mind.
So when coming to film solo I had to adapt and change shots
up a bit, but the general premise that I had in the planning for
the video is still there.

8. EDITING
Editing was definitely the best part of the process for me.
I started by putting all the footage I shot in order, then
gradually just removed and swapped around shots until I had
a cut I liked, then I began making creative edits, such as
intercutting footage together and editing.
Every shot in the video has been colour corrected and
finding the exact colour I wanted on the colour wheel was
quite fun. I mostly used the Day4Nite and FujiFilm black and
white colour correction options with slight tweaks of my own.

9. WHAT WENT WELL

1. I was happy with the way the first shot in the video turned
out.
2. I think the way some of the colour correction turned out
was also good, I think I could still improve it with more
time, but overall I like it.
3. The shot in the video where they open the box and the
camera swipes from one latch to the other, I’m very
happy with the way that looks.

10. WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE? [3
EXAMPLES]
1. I had originally planned to get help from somebody, but
that didn’t pan out due to schedules, so I had to film
everything by myself which definitely proved challenging.
2. Finding locations to film was difficult as most places near
where I live didn’t really have the vibe I would have liked
for the video.
3. I had filmed a lot of footage, but when coming to edit I
found there was some shots that just didn’t work or the
video was better without, or some I just didn’t like, so
finding the best footage to use took some time.

11. NEXT STEPS…
What are the main things you’ve learned from this project?
Pick a minimum of 5 to discuss…
1. I learned how to edit in premier pro, which I didn’t know
before.
2. I learned about setting up lighting for shots, which I’d
previously had no experience with.
3. I learned a lot about the fundamentals of music videos, I
don’t think I’ll be able to watch a music video again
without knowing how and why everything was done.
4. Syncing images to music more accurately.
5. Learned about how to create a narrative within the walls
of a music video.
