How to write a book report
1. HOW TO WRITE A BOOK REPORT?
This presentation will give you some clues for your reading process.
You’ll write your reports in class, just like you were having an exam.
You can use your books, dictionnaries in the exam. However, mobile
phones, smart phones and digital or web- based dictionnaries are
NOT allowed into the class. SORRY, but we have to collect your
phones and i-pods, i-pads when you come to the exam.
If you don’t want to have any trouble in the exam, you should do
some pre- exam studies. This presentation will help you in this
aspect.
While reading, we advise you;
Underline a quotation which you like.
Take some notes (to answer the questions we ask in this presentation
or to remember some important details.)
*we’re NOT going to use this kind of document in the exam but we believe, these
questions will give you an idea to study.
2. QUESTION 1: TITLE- AUTHOR
What’s the title?
What did you think the book was about, before reading? (you can
look at the cover of the book and guess.)
Who is the author (writer)? Can you tell a bit about
him/ her? (birth date, birth place, nationality etc. and also you
can state if he/ she educated himself/ herself or if he/ she went to
school. Give a little information about family.)
What are his/ her previous works? (write the name of some books.
which theme did he/ she used in them?)
3. QUESTION 2:
GENRE, LANGUAGE, BOOK’S THEME
What’s the GENRE of the book? (there are 2 types of
books: fiction and non-fiction. These types can be cathegorised under
the title “genre”.) For example;
Romance science fiction
Mystery thriller
Action tragedy
Comedy biography
Autobiography historical
Fantasy horror
*you can also include western and gothic.
4. What’s the THEME?:
Theme is the universal idea. A message or a lesson which the author
gives in books. Here are some examples;
Generation gap- experience vs. youthful strenght
Escape- escape from family pressures, escaping social constraints
Love- love maintains everything

5. What’s the LANGUAGE of the book?
Is it formal/ informal?
Does the writer use 1st person narrator or 3rd person narrator?
1st person narrator: author writes about his/ her own story or
experience.
Ex: autobiography, short stories, romance, horror
etc.
The Catcher in The Rye by J. D. Salinger,
Twilight by S. Meyer.
3rd person narrator: author writes about someone’s story. Ex:
biography, satire, romance, etc.
Animal Farm by G. Orwell,
Çalıkuşu by R. N. Güntekin
6. QUESTION 3: SUMMARY
Take notes while reading:
o main character (there can be more than 1 in some books. Did you
like the character? How did they change throughout the story?)
o sequence of events (you can make a list of events in order to ease
the summary. Don’t make a very detailed list; just take short notes.)
o comment on the theme (do you agree with the author about the
moral/ lesson? If you do, you should support it. You can give
examples and you can also use a quotation from the book.)
o comment on the ending (did the ending satisfy you? If you were
the author, how would you end it? What would you change in the
story?)
7. QUESTION 4: CONCLUSION
o What are the major strenghts and weaknesses in the book/
story?
o What’s your personal judgement? Did you like or dislike? Why?
Why not?
o Is this a book (which/that) you would recommend to your friends?
