Unit 24 sound editing
1. Unit24: sound editing
When recording sound there is fictional and factual sounds but these both need to be
treated in different ways so that they appeal to the audience. First we need to know reasons
for why sound may need to be edited it is likely that you might get background noise in your
audio which you don’t want in as it ruins your audio clip you just recorded and you would
want this out of your audio as it would ruin it. Another reason why you might need to edit
sound could be that the audio was recorded in a studio but needs to sound like it was
recorded in a street or any other location that isn’t in a studio. Again you would need to edit
sound for example is there Is in appropriate audio in there like swearing which may not be
suitable for your target audience who is going to be listening to the audio. But there’s still
many other reasons why you might want the audio edited.
Fictional sound
An example of how fictional content is created is seen in the creation of the sounds for the
monsters in a quiet place where they are made by putting a Taser onto grapes then slowing
the audio down to give the effect of monster walking around near the characters. Also they
could have changed the pitch while editing the sound to make sure it is perfect for what it
needs to be used for in the film. This is very effective within the film as it causes a great deal
of tension while you are watching it because the sound is so strange and unordinary It gives
you the creeps. Because a quiet place is basically all in silence the sounds have to be perfect
so that when audio is in the film its purpose is clearly recognized in the filmand has the
right effects on the audience to make them feel how the producers want them to feel,
which is to be scared or confused by how strange the noise is that is coming from the
monster. Another fictional sound editing technique that can be seen being used in a movie
is the sound of the memory balls in Inside Out when they hit together and are getting
moved about. They used glass balls and recorded it into a boom mic until they were happy
and then went and changed the pitch of the noise in editing so that it matched what they
wanted it to sound like so it suited the filmand didn’t seem like it wasn’t meant to be there.
This gave the immersive effect to the audience watching as it meant that they were feeling
apart of the filmbecause all the sounds matched perfectly for what they meant to be. But
there’s also background noise that needs to be edit within a scene to make sure that the
scene works with it and a good example of this comes from the final fight scene in green
street where Tommy is hitting Pete on the floor and everything seems to go quite apart
from the sounds of him punching him. This drags the attention of the viewer to that exact
moment of the scene where they almost feel like they are actually standing right there
watching as there’s no other audio apart from the punching. This is possible because the
audio gain of the background noise has been dropped a lot to show just how important that
part of the film actually is and it needs your full attention. While recording your sound you
may have realized that you need your audio to sound like it is somewhere different for
example you might have recorded the audio in a recording studio but need it to sound like
it’s in a tunnel or something so you would have to change the overdubs of the audio so that
It gives that effect of being inside of a tunnel and doesn’t ruin the continuity of your project.

2. Factual sound
When you watch things such as nature documentary’s or animal programs they use a wide
range of ways to make the sound feel immersive and real for the person watching it. An
example would be using bushes to make the sound of thunder and lightning which will be
made louder during the editing process of it or even played at the same time as other sound
effects to make it sound thicker. In blue planet II during a scene where you are following a
cheetah who is stalking its prey in the bushes. You can see the city in the background which
means that they have added the audio of a city onto the clip to give that immersive
experience. Through the clip the sound of the city becomes quieter as the cheetah is about
to get its prey, doing this to the audio means that the viewer is getting dragged into the
scene creating tension as something is about to happen. This was all possible because of
simply just slowly reducing the volume of the audio in the scene. You have to keep the
sounds however in factual content really close to the original so that it doesn’t ruin the
continuity of the media that you’re watching and allows people to have an enjoyable
experience while they are watching this. Also editing sound can be manipulated to make it
sound like someone is saying something completely different from what they have said just
by cutting the audio and pasting it into different places to alter what they have said. This is
called ethical editing of factual material and is very important that people don’t manipulate
what others are saying as that could cause serious backlash on the person who they have
done it to. When you have recorded in a specific location you have to ensure that the
background noise which could be a busy city in the background doesn’t over power the
dialogue of the people in the clip this is important so it doesn’t make it hard for the
audience to hear what their saying, ensuring that this has been carried out right it allows
your production to be more enjoyable to watch for the people who are watching as they can
just Other sounds can be used that aren’t just weather related such as footsteps or horses
running for example to create that sound someone will record the sound of them hitting
horse shoes off the floor in time with the horse on the screen to create the sense that you
are actually there. They do this as they can’t possibly catch the perfect sound of a horse
running to add on top of a video clip

Task2
From my experience of editing sound for video I found that using logic on the mac
seems to be one of the simplest and efficient software you can use when you are
starting to edit sound. It’s also one of the most common pieces of software that is
being used as its easily accessible. However, if you have a PC not a mac it gives you
access to many other different types of audio editing software’s which may be
beneficial for the user in future as they could offer things that logic might not be able
to. Before there was the advantage of using software that has all the tools you need to
be able to edit your audio you would have to sit and physically cut the audio tapes so
that your audio played out the way you wished I play out. This would make it a lot
harder than just cutting it on the computer as that can take at most 5 seconds to
complete but cutting it physically may take a long time to do slowing down the
production speed of your product. Also to link in with that when working on the
computer there is a lot of shortcuts that you can use to make the editing process a
whole lot quicker and easier for you. One of these for example would be on logic you
3. can just press r on your keyboard to allow you to start recording sound instead of
needing to press the record button every time you want to stop and start the
recording. Another keyboard shortcut that is very useful when working on the mac on
logic is using cmd + c to copy a selected file that you want to duplicate and then press
cmd + v which will paste the file that you have just copied in logic. These commands
will also be able to be used on other computers and other software’s allowing you to be
able to get the job you need doing done quickly and efficiently. If you are using a mac
do work on sound you may be limited to only using logic which is good but there is
many other software’s that you can use to edit sound that may be more suited to you.
A disadvantage for logic is that you can only get it on a mac, and it costs lot of money to
get it as well which means that some people may not have the funds to get installed on
there computer.
When capturing sound, I just put it straight into logic as it is a simple method of
capturing sound as it goes straight onto your project in a very simple way. This is done
by only needing to press the R key on your keyboard to start a recording and then
pressing it again to stop the recording. The audio clip then gets sent straight into logic
where you can then edit your audio clip. However if you have your audio already
recorded you should put them all into a file that is all labeled so you can have it open
next to your project and then just drag and drop the selected sound file into your
project so you have the right one in there. This just makes the completion your project
a lot quicker and a lot easier then having to sit and find where all your audio files are.
When using logic you may need to cut and paste clips into you project and this is very
simple as there is specific key commands for this for example if you need to cut a piece
of audio in your project all you would need to do is press command + x on your
keyboard then select with your mouse the section you wish to cut. Using this simple
keyboard shortcut makes the process of editing your audio a lot quicker as you can do
that in a couple of seconds compared to having to look for the tool in logic then
applying it. Another useful keyboard shortcut to make your experience on logic easier is
Command + Arrow keys this allows you to zoom in and out on logic so that you can get
closer to audio files that you need to if you need to make a precise cut to one of them
so that they all run smoothly through out your project. These shortcuts mean that you
can do everything so much more quicker and can spend more time focusing on the
important parts of your project not the things such as just zooming in and out which
can now be done in the matter of a couple seconds now. When using logic you might
want to know how turn the audio gain down on a selected clip you have because it may
be to loud compared to the others this is done by selecting the clip you wish to use and
then pressing the I key so it brings up the panel on the left which you can see in the
image and then dragging to the left where it says audio gain to make your audio clip
quieter so it works with your project. This is an important tool as it means that you can
now make the clips fit a specific part you need without it sounding out of place making
your work more professional. For example, making someone quieter so that they sound
far away from the camera. (The photo below shows that)
4. Another example of sound editing in logic is doubling your audio tracks which is when you
play more than one tracks of audio at the same as others, so they play over the top of each
other. This can create effects such as giving the effect of a crowd of people talking or
shouting at the same time creating a chaotic tone or confusion.
This is very simple to do as all
you need to do is out the audio
tracks on top of each other so
that it gives that sense of feeling
that loads of people are talking
all at once in one big group or
even an argument.
When your wanting to makes sure your audio flows seamlessly throughout the duration of
your project you don’t want to leave blank spaces where there is no sound playing as it
means you are able to hear the cuts in the audio. So adding the background noise that is in
5. all the video clips to the empty parts where there is no audio, allows it to not sound like the
audio has ever been cut and creates a very smooth audio track.
When you’re in the middle of your project you want to make sure that you don’t lose your
work so making multiple saves of your work will help in order to not do that. This could
mean saving it onto your computer and onto a usb at the same time so that their multiple
versions you can go back to if you need to. Also, if you save the work onto creative cloud it
allows you to access that work from any computer you wish to which is a very useful tool for
if your moving around a building changing computer. If you’re on your computer and your
doing work sometimes it can be easier to open multiple screens at one time so that your
work becomes more manageable as it means you can access more files at the same time so
you can drag over work or follow instructions you need to follow. This benefits you as it
means that you are always hitting the required points that you need to allowing you to
make the project the best you can.
To make the background noise last all over
your audio clips without sounding like it
has been cut you are going to need to cut
a piece of your audio out of a clip which
has background noise in and then copy
that onto a spare section in logic. After you
have done that the noise won’t be long
enough for all your audio files so right click
and press repeat so that it stretches out
over all your audio files. This means that
you audio will be more professional as the
cuts in you audio won’t be noticeable and
it will be very smooth.
6. Editing sound to make it sound like something else is important as it gives a different feel to
your production for the people watching for example the lightsaber sound effect was found
by Ben Burtt when he walk past a switched on tv with microphone in his hand and it create
this weird sound that he really like so they used that for the movie as it matched what the
lightsaber looks like. This is just one example of many where people have gone to many
lengths to create sound for a film. Another example would come again from star wars for
Chewbacca as the way they got the sound for him was by showing a bear some food and the
bears reaction would express lots od different noises that they later used to play over the
top of Chewbacca in the film and that’s how they created them iconic sounds.
