How to Write a Five
   Paragraph Essay

Introduction


     The introduction gives the
     reader a brief outline of your
     essay. The first sentence in
     your introduction is called “The
     Hook”.
The Hook             1st Sentence

  The hook sentence grabs the reader’s
  attention and makes them want to read more.
  The hook is an interesting fact from the writer’s
  research. It can be…


          • A question…
          • A quote…
          • An exclamation…
Thesis       (Main Idea)- Second Sentence




 The thesis can be an opinion or a fact.
 However, it must be well written and specific.
 It gives the reader a clear idea about the
 writer’s essay.
Subtopics   Sentences 3, 4, and 5


  These three sentences
    are examples that
   support your thesis.
Transition    Sentence 6




  The transition sentence
  prepares the reader for
  the next paragraph.

The Body- Paragraphs 3,4,and 5


    The body contains three paragraphs.
    Each paragraph must have a topic
    sentence that restates one of the
    supporting ideas mentioned in the first
    paragraph. Each paragraph expands
    on each subtopic mentioned in the
    introduction. Don’t forget a transition!
Conclusion- Paragraph #5
   The conclusion restates the thesis and the three
   supporting ideas in a powerful way. It’s also
   referred to as the “So what?” paragraph,
   meaning “What have you learned?”
