9. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) provides emergency response services throughout the country. FENZ embraced
the disruptive force of cloud technology, choosing the Microsoft Azure platform, to give its crews unprecedented access to
data through mobile information hubs on fire trucks. With real-time situational awareness, crews make better decisions,
improving their ability to fight fires and save lives. FENZ is realizing its vision for digitally enabled first responder protocols
and transforming public safety services in New Zealand.
FENZ turned to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to optimize
operations and deliver enhanced, cost-effective public service.
By adopting Microsoft cloud technology, FENZ also gets set to
benefit from the latest IT trends, including the Internet of Things
(IoT), machine learning, and predictive analytics. For the data
hub, FENZ used a Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Enterprise cluster
and replicated the hub to the Azure environment at the
Microsoft datacenter in Australia.
It then wrapped the data hub with Azure API Management and
Service Bus layers to provide the fire trucks with connectivity to
different data sources. This information is disseminated to the trucks
through multiple bearer services—a service that allows transmission
of information signals between network interfaces. These include 3G,
4G, satellite, Wi-Fi, Land Mobile Radio Network, and LoRaWAN (a
low-power, long-range wide area network) for IoT scenarios.
