- 2. Learn how to get the most out of Library Search Remember to sign in first so that you can: • Access full text resources • Save your references • Save your search • Request books
- 3. Resources on Library Search include… Books Journal articles Newspaper articles Items are either ‘Available Online’ or ‘Available’ in the library (or both).
- 4. Request a book using Click and Collect If a book is only available in the library i.e. no electronic copy, you can borrow it using our Click and Collect service. When the book is ready to collect you will receive an email at your university live.mdx.ac.uk account. Click on the link in the email to select a time slot for collection. Click on the book title and then click on ‘Request’. Click and Collect https://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/clickandcollect
- 5. Many resources are available full-text online Click on ‘Available Online’…. ….you will then see a link to a database which provides access to the resource that you want. This is a database that the library pays for – in this case Business Source Complete. Click on the link…. ….then click on the PDF or HTML icon to access the journal article.
- 6. If you see Citation available… …it means that this resource is not available online or in the library. However it is usually possible to obtain it using our Inter Library Loan Service. Click on ‘Citation available’… …and then click on ‘Request by Inter Library Loan’ and follow the instructions. You will need to register the first time you use this service. - 7. Save your favourite resources Click on the ‘pin’ symbol to save a resource. Once a resource has been saved, the ‘pin’ symbol is crossed out and the resource will be saved to a folder at the top of the screen. This is your ‘Favourites’ folder. Click on the ‘pin’ symbol at the top of the screen to view your saved resources i.e. Your ‘Favourites’.
- 8. Once the ‘Favourites’ folder is open you can…. ….see a list of the resources you have saved. Signing-in to Library Search means that they will remain in your Favourites folder until you choose to delete them. To email details of the item to yourself, click on ‘…’ and then ‘Email’. Click on ‘Add Labels’ to tag items.
- 9. Save your search When you have carried out a search, click on ‘Save search’. Your search and any refinements that you have used such as date or subject will be saved in your Favourites folder….. ….click on the ‘pin’ symbol to access your Favourites and then select ‘Saved searches’. Click on a saved search to run the search again. Click on these symbols for additional functionality e.g. set up an alert for a search. You can also unpin the search to delete it.

- Welcome to Library Search Extras. If you have not seen ‘Library Search Getting Started’, please watch that first as that will give you a basic overview of Library Search. - In this presentation we will learn how to get the most out of Library search. Please remember to sign into Library Search each time you use it so that you can: Locate the available copies of print books in the library Access full text resources Save your references Save your search Request books for collection using our Click and Collect service
- You will find a range of resources on Library Search including journal articles, books and newspapers. The first example on this page is a journal article. If you click on ‘available online’ you will go directly to the page where the journal article can be downloaded. The second example is a book. This is available as a printed book in the library and also as an ebook. Where it says ‘Available at Sheppard Library Hendon’, this means it is a print book located in the library. Where it says ‘available online’, this means it’s an ebook which you can read online and in some cases download chapters to keep. The final example is a newspaper article which is available online via the link shown.
- If a book is only available in the library i.e. no electronic copy, it is possible to borrow it using our Click and Collect service. To do this search for a book as normal. If the book is physically located in the library, with no electronic version, then click on the book title. This will take you to another screen where you can click on ‘Request’. When the book is ready to collect you will receive an email at your university ‘live.mdx.ac.uk account. Click on the link in the email to select a time slot for collection. - Many resources in Library Search are available full text online. In this example we are looking for a journal article on project management which available online to read. To access the article, click on ‘Available online’. You will then see a link to a database which provides access to the resource that you want to read. This is a database the library pays for, in this case Business Source Complete. Click on the link and then click on the pdf or HTML icon on the next page to access the journal article.
