The EU is highly dependent on raw materials crucial for industry and competitiveness. Securing sustainable access to raw materials, especially critical raw materials, is important for the EU economy. This topic aims to scale up raw materials production technologies and demonstrate innovative and sustainable production to strengthen European industry and meet energy and climate targets. The top institutes receiving raw materials funding are Fraunhofer in Germany, VTT in Finland, KU Leuven in Belgium, and TU Delft in Netherlands. Relevant networks include the EIT Raw Materials, the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials, and ERA-MIN. This study identifies the key organizations involved in raw materials research.

Raw materials Innovation Action
The EU is highly dependent on raw materials that are crucial for a strong
European industrial base, an essential building block of the EU's growth and
competitiveness. Securing the sustainable access to raw materials, including
metals, industrial minerals and construction raw materials, and particularly
Critical Raw Materials (CRM), for the EU economy is of high importance.
The challenge for industry is to scale-up promising raw materials production
technologies and to demonstrate that raw materials can be produced in an
innovative and sustainable way in order to make sure that research and
innovation end-up on the market, to strengthen the competitiveness of the
European raw materials industries, to meet ambitious energy and climate
2030 targets and to gain the trust of the EU citizens to raw materials sector.
Methodology
Stage 1: Mapping of research projects: The CORDIS database was
searched using pre-selected keywords across the full suite of FP7 and
Horizon 2020 programmes and relevant projects identified
Stage 2: Mapping of key Institutes to receive raw materials funding: The
research projects from Stage 1 were comprehensively searched to discern
whether there was evidence of research institutes involved in multiple
research projects. The top performing institutes involved in multiple
projects were identified.
Stage 3: Analysis of “networking” groups: A range of EU networking
groups in the raw materials research area were analysed as part of Stage
3. Participants in networks which were also “top performing institutes”
from Stage 2 were identified.
