The legendary JESSI
Joint European Sub-micron Silicon programme
 The pioneer JESSI (1989 – 1996) was the first EUREKA ‘strategic initiative’, and
set an ambitious precedent for clusters of the future.
 JESSI primarily focused on deeper co-operation between European semiconductor
companies to close the technology gap with the US and Japan.
 It shrunk whole computer systems onto single chips and helped three European
manufacturers Siemens / Infineon, Philips / NXP and ST Microelectronics into
the top ten ranking semiconductor fabricators in the world.
 For more than a decade, the EUREKA JESSI, MEDEA and MEDEA+ programmes
have made it possible for Europe’s industry to reinforce its position in semiconductor
process technology, manufacturing and applications, and to become a key supplier to
markets such as telecommunications, consumer electronics and automotive
electronics.

Patient friendly medical intervention

 Philips Healthcare MR will release new features in 2014:
- Motion compensation strategies during MR imaging
- Metal artifact correction methods to make images around metal
implants of diagnostic quality
 Entering Image Guided Intervention and Therapy solutions market (10
times larger than interventional imaging market alone)
 Significant additional annual sales volume over the next five years
is expected due this strategy and these improvements
 Developed a web collaborative platform relevant for multiple clinical
applications, e.g. 2 orthopaedic applications, still in development but 1
already CE marked by a SQI customer
 Radiotherapy equipment software will enter clinical evaluation at a
leading European Oncology Center by June 2014
 Half of the revenue and jobs by 2016 will be a consequence of the
work in MEDIATE.
 Ten leading Belgian and
Dutch hospitals signed
for Nexxis

MODELISAR
Setting a global standard in the automotive domain
Modelling and simulation is essential in the automotive industry. The MODELISAR
project developed a worldwide open standard (FMI) to integrate different simulation
environments in the automotive domain.
Start date: July 2008
End date: December 2011

Global approach/ customer & end user
involvement/ Seizing the high ground
BMW, Daimler and Ford started in Q2 2012 an initiative to establish FMI as the
standard for simulation model exchange between OEMs and suppliers.
These OEMs as well as Chrysler, Fiat, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Renault,
Toyota and Volkswagen signed at GAAG conference in Oct 2012 a
commitment to support this initiative.
Up to date, it was signed in addition by Audi, HKMC, Honda, Isuzu, PSA, Suzuki,
Tata, Volvo and Volvo Cars.

 Strong Clusters cooperation with e.g. the Republic of Korea and Canada

The future of EUREKA is digital
 Research and innovation in Europe has to become more global and
digital; EUREKA and especially the Clusters may act as frontrunners for
this development. Through their flexibility and adaptability, the
EUREKA Clusters are well equipped to consider more global
approaches and the involvement of customers and end users.
 For example, ITEA has a collective workforce of about 3,000 people,
and we generate around 70 ideas a year. A digital ITEA will have a
‘crowd’-workforce of around three million people worldwide, with
experts in our main domains. We will manage 70,000 ‘crowd-
generated’ ideas in a truly digital world. We need to understand how
to organise and finance such a digital ITEA.

  • 13. 13 MODELISAR Setting a global standard in the automotive domain Modelling and simulation is essential in the automotive industry. The MODELISAR project developed a worldwide open standard (FMI) to integrate different simulation environments in the automotive domain. Start date: July 2008 End date: December 2011
  • 14. 14 MODELISAR Global approach/ customer & end user involvement/ Seizing the high ground BMW, Daimler and Ford started in Q2 2012 an initiative to establish FMI as the standard for simulation model exchange between OEMs and suppliers. These OEMs as well as Chrysler, Fiat, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen signed at GAAG conference in Oct 2012 a commitment to support this initiative. Up to date, it was signed in addition by Audi, HKMC, Honda, Isuzu, PSA, Suzuki, Tata, Volvo and Volvo Cars.

  • 16. 16 The future of EUREKA is digital  Research and innovation in Europe has to become more global and digital; EUREKA and especially the Clusters may act as frontrunners for this development. Through their flexibility and adaptability, the EUREKA Clusters are well equipped to consider more global approaches and the involvement of customers and end users.  For example, ITEA has a collective workforce of about 3,000 people, and we generate around 70 ideas a year. A digital ITEA will have a ‘crowd’-workforce of around three million people worldwide, with experts in our main domains. We will manage 70,000 ‘crowd- generated’ ideas in a truly digital world. We need to understand how to organise and finance such a digital ITEA.
