Explicitly, ‘The Dutch Seventeenth Century’ and ‘The Dutch Golden Age’ are pseudo-synonymous and refer to a particular era of Dutch history. Implicitly, the ‘Golden Age’ moniker is contested due to the fact that the geopolitical and economic expansion came with great costs, such as the slave trade. A simple two-word phrase can carry strong contestations, and entire research fields, such as post-colonial studies, are devoted to them. However, these sometimes subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) differences in voice are as yet not often represented well in AI systems. In this talk, I will discuss how the Cultural AI Lab is working towards creating AI systems that are implicitly or explicitly aware of the subtle and subjective complexity of human culture. I will highlight the different research strands and activities that look at AI from different angles as well as how we engage with our user communities to create synergies between the technology and the daily practice of cultural heritage professionals. Libraries, museums and archives – so-called memory institutions – are undergoing intense technological transformations in the way they catalog, preserve and publish cultural heritage information. The timeline, scope, and outcome of this technological advancement seem to be very different in these fields, due to the different mission and structure of these institutions. However, some of the underlying tools, specific goals, methodologies and data models seem to be shared among most of the cultural institutions who are invested in technological advancement. In this informal, open discussion and Q/A among the panelists and with the audience, the participants will engage in an exchange of use cases in their own specific fields, trying to find a common ground where cultural heritage institutions can collaborate to establish standards that are valid for all cultural expressions.

This White Paper is commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in an effort to build a common platform for all the stakeholders – large, small; witting, unwitting – in the preservation of audiovisual heritage to consider the urgency of collective action in a fast-moving and increasingly strange world, a world where concerted efforts to preserve and share our information and knowledge are now more important than ever. The White Paper is intended for circulation in October 2017 among leaders of cultural and educational institutions participating in the 2017 FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Mexico – and at that meeting to help a new international thought leadership group to articulate, perhaps starting with the 10 key points below, an international research and action agenda and certain funding priorities for our audiovisual cultural heritage sector, broadly defined, over the next 10 years.

This paper is based on work by Clara Freer, Ian Dennis, Alan Lane and Niall Sharples on the assemblage from Bornais. Excavated by N. Sharples from 1994 to 2004. A large settlement located on the machair plain of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Occupation found to spread over five mounds with most mounds contemporary during the Norse period with about 50 – 75 people occupying the site. It was Occupied from at least 5th century AD through to the 15tb century AD. Our objectives were: # Understand the nature of platter production # Consider manufacturing constraints (including the amount of clay in weight used, the temper, size, styles and different forms found on the Bornais excavations) # Investigate their use as baking plates, how effective they are and to examine their durability # Investigate gendered production through an examination of the size of the finger print impressions found on platters from Bornais # Examine and compare our platters to the ones from Bornais
