This document discusses the profitable business of plantain and banana sucker multiplication. It outlines the simple steps to planting suckers, including obtaining hybrid suckers, preparing the field, planting in holes with fertilizer, and managerial measures like weeding and mulching. A cost analysis shows the costs of production for a 500 square meter plot, including suckers, manure, labor, and transportation. The analysis estimates a first year profit of 79,200 naira, and that profits will increase in subsequent seasons through sucker multiplication and sales. The document promotes agriculture as a good long-term business.

3. Conditions that should be met to achieve better
yield:
• The climatic condition of your area of interest.
• Source of your planting materials.
• The Land status must be put into consideration.
• Selecting the site.
• preparing the field.
• Mapping out of the field to achieve better spacing.
• selecting and preparing the suckers.

4. Steps in Planting The Suckers.
Step 1.
• Obtain hybrid and healthy sucker from
an actively growing plant.

5. Step 2.
• Wash off soil and peel off the roots to make it free from weevil or
nematode.
• you can treat with hot water( optional).

6. Step 3.
• Map out the field in your pattern preferably 3*3 meters spacing.
• Note: This depends on the availability of suckers and the fertility of
the soil.it could be lesser.

7. Step 4
• Dig a hole of about 2.5 feet depth.

8. Step 5.
• Apply fertilizer or poultry manure
(preferably)
into the hole, mix with small soil
and fill to the middle of the hole.

10. Managerial Measures:
In the first six months of the plant, proper attention should be given to the
plant so as to make sure weed does not take over the field.
• Apply another manure after the first weeding
• You can visit the field once or twice a month depending on your availability.
• Clean manually mostly with cutlass and not hoe so as not to destroy the
plant.
• Mulching should be encouraged during dry season for this will help to
reduce transpiration and the same time increase the soil nutrient.
• During fruiting, prop your plant to prevent it from lodging.
• Harvesting is done from ten to twelve weeks after flowering. This should be
done timely to avoid being perished or destroyed by birds.

11. Note:
• A plot of land measuring about 500 Sqms can take about 72 suckers
with spacing of 3*3 meters (10*10 feet).
Cost Analysis:
• Cost of production/sales.
• Cost of sucker = 300 Naira each ( Hybrid) Plot of 500 sqms takes about
72 suckers.
• 72*300=21,600

12. • Manure Application.
• 25kg feed bag of manure= 200 naira per bag.
• 18 bags to be used before planting, I.e. 1 bag for 4 suckers.
• 18 bags to be used after first wedding, I.e. 1 bag for 4 suckers. Total
number of poultry dung is 36 bags.
• 36*200=7200.

13. -Cost Analysis:
• General Labor(planting, weeding and manuring)=10,000.
• Transportation (poultry dungs and suckers )= 6000
• Miscellaneous= 2000
• Total cost= 46,800.
• A bunch of hybrid plantain sells for 1200 to bulk buyers.
• A bunch of banana sells for at least 2000 to bulk buyers. Assuming 30
suckers of plantain and 42 suckers of banana was planted. Then 30*1200=
42000.
• 42* 2000= 84000.
• Sum= 42000+84000 =126000
• Profit= 126000-46,800= 79,200.

14. At the end of the first planting season, a profit of about 77200 naira is
expected. It increases in Subsequent seasons because there will be no
need to buy suckers, the suckers multiply and one can start selling
them or expand further. Then you won't plant again for other seasons
but can apply some manures if you wish. Each stand might bring more
5-7 suckers. One can also transplant to more other plots if available.
