Feb 2014 – Date Engineering Manager,
Frontier Mining Projects
 Appointed Engineering Manager (2-13-1: Plant and shaft operation) to build up both the Star and
Sedibeng diamond mines and manage the engineering teams on both sides.
 Responsible for plant, shaft, surface and underground equipment, as well as production and trackless
mobile machine (TMM) equipment.
 Ensure that both sides are efficient in terms of production and costs and supervise the upgrade, start-
up and commissioning of both diamond recovery plants
 Accountable for seven small vertical shafts depths, from 350m to 750m
 Direct a work force of 85 employees, including mechanical, electrical and metallurgical supervisors
and subordinates.
 Planning to install inter-level ore passes and loading ore into skips at Star Diamonds on completion of
the development of 17 level station to increase hoisting capacity
Key achievements
 Activated the Dancarl shaft and increased hoisting cycle time and capacity; also drained Albert’s Shaft
and activated the 23 level development and stoping section whilst clearing Settlers on both levels to
optimise pumping capacity and water handling
 Reached peak production at Star Diamonds with only 160 employees
 Installed power factor correction units on the two sites and changed shift times to avoid Eskom peak
times, thus saving approximately about R300 000 on the electricity bill for each site.
 Introduced safety and compliance systems and implemented an hour-based maintenance system for
the site and TMM equipment.
 Implemented controls and management off all light duty vehicles (LDV’s) at both sites and upgraded
the sites’ hostels and living quarters.
2008 - 2014 Engineering Manager
Goldfields Twin Shaft, Westonaria

 Appointed the 2.13.1 Unit Manager, Engineering, to take responsibility for the Twin Shaft Complex
between 2008 and 2010 – a statutory appointment in terms of the Mine's Health and Safety Association
(MHSA) Act of 1992 to take charge of machinery and personnel.
 Supervised and directed a workforce of 250, including engineering supervisors, mine captains,
electrical and mechanical supervisors, the Control and Instrumentation (C&I) department and
subordinates.
 Appointed a 3.1A Shaft Manager accountable for Shaft Engineering and Operations for the full complex
and surface infrastructure; also as 7.2 Engineering Manager for Mechanised Mining to assist the
General Manager with Engineering maintenance and Fleet Operations.
 Took responsibility for 750 employees, two Unit Manager Engineers, four Engineering Overseers and
sixteen Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Supervisors between 2012 and 2014
 Restructured shaft resources and ensured legal compliance through the appointment of a Safety
Officer to conduct audits and head the shaft complex’s safety system.
 Defined the supervisor’s functions and responsibilities to control and monitor daily, weekly and
monthly objectives and restructured Maintenance Planning and the programme for stationary
machinery to optimise availability
Key achievements
 Upgraded the BMR rock winder control, i.e. the Alstom Cyclone Drive and increased ore flow from 60
000 tonnes to 175 000 tones.
 Restructured material handling and increased volume from 55 cars per shift to 85 whilst reducing the
cost of the rock winder rope and skip from R12.5 million to R6.2 million.
Key achievements as 3.1A Shaft Manager
 Project managed the diesel and lubrication dispensing projects, dealing with the contract,
procurement and civil, mechanical and electrical installations; control and instrumentation (C&I)
philosophy and C&I installation, i.e. Bradley Plc control and Scada at a cost of R6.8 million.
 Completed monitoring and information control of Twin’s ore hoisting and took ownership of the Optic
Fibre shaft installation, the leaky feeder shaft installation, i.e. Twin radio coms, and the installation
of CCTV surveillance underground and on the surface.
 Automised the conveyor belt system and start-up sequence; utilised the Scada visual information
system to generate computer control room shift reports; managed Twin’s HT reticulation, as well as
the installation of ABB HT switch gear and the ABB HT bus coupler.
 Conducted annual primary and secondary injection testing and took responsibility for load balance and
discrimination, as well as remote switching from surface through the optic fibre network
Key achievements as Engineering Manager: TMM
 Efficiently dealt with all trackless mobile machine (TMM) equipment; implemented Pragma on the Key
5 planned maintenance system and designed, negotiated and delivered the AARD personnel carrier
programme at a cost of R11.5 million.
 Also responsible for the new TMM fleet specs and purchasing at a cost of R132 million, as well as TMM
fleet production optimisation.
 Installed the new HT Ring Feed, a bio-carbon dispensing system and the design of a mega workshop,
working within a budget of R132 million.
2006 - 2008 Engineering Manager
Redpath, Johannesburg
 Appointed 2.13.1-Site Engineer for the development of a 94 level refrigeration plant and a vent shaft
deepening project.
Key achievements
 Civil installation of the refrigeration plant was completed ahead of the end date whilst the installation
of the HT sub-station was commissioned on time and within budget.
 Managed a Plant C&I Controls and Commissioning project and increased the brattice wall installation
from two to four per shift and achieved a record of no injuries or fatalities during shaft work.
 The bank steel work installation was successful and on time.
