Preston Department of Sociology, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98 1 95 INTRODUCTION Perhaps no component of social welfare is as highly valued as life itself. The years of life enjoyed by a population in a particular year are readily indexed by population size. However, a larger population is not generally considered to be better off simply by virtue of its greater volume of life. Like most other indicators of welfare, life is commonly measured on a per capita basis: either by average life expectancy at birth or by its close relative, the annual rate of death adjusted for age. There is a small element of arbitrariness in the choice of an index, since the socially defined age at which life begins is not uniform across populations. Regardless of the index chosen, it is clear that mortality conditions have improved dramatically in the past century. The improvements have been shared by all nations and by virtually all demographic and social groups. This paper briefly reviews the magnitude of these improvements, considers the factors that appear to be responsible, identifies certain remaining inequalities in the length of life, and examines some of the consequences of these developments. MAGNITUDE OF MORTALITY CHANGES Identifying precisely the average length of life is still impossible for slightly more than half of the world's population, since registration of death remains badly incom plete in many countries. The data problems are magnified when attention shifts to earlier eras of human history. But even for these periods, substitute sources of information permit the estimation of life expectancy within a reasonably narrow range. For prehistoric populations, the only source of information is skeletal re mains. The various estimates based on such data are summarized in Acsadi & Nemeskeri (1970). Their summary suggests that life expectancy in prehistoric popu lations was probably in the range of 18-25 years. Hunter-gatherer populations and others at an early developmental stage were almost certainly clustered into groups too small to sustain the acute infectious diseases that were later to present a persis tent scourge among more densely settled groups (Cockburn 1963). For this reason, the native populations of the New World were totally unprepared for the diseases brought by European colonists. Some have suggested that the absence of acute 1 63 A nn u. R ev . Randy Olson/National Geographic/SuperStock Learning Objectives After studying this chapter, you should be able to: • Explain what the field of demography and demographics is about and how demographers use concepts like birth rates, death rates, and fertility rates to study changes in population over time. • Discuss the range of population forecasts for the decades ahead and the factors that help explain the variation in those forecasts. • Explain the I 5 PAT concept and how it shifts the focus of the population-environment debate from one solely focused on human numbers to a broader discussion of the role of affluence and technology in environmental degradation. • Discuss the ways in which the combination of increased family planning services and improvement in the status of women in society helped the Asian nation of Bangladesh achieve remarkable reductions in fertility rates and population growth. Human Population Dynamics 2 CN CT CO_TX CO_BL CO_CRD CO_LO ben85927_02_c02.indd 63 1/20/14 2:32 PM InTroDucTIon Pre-Test 1. Beyond the availability of family planning and contraceptive services, demographers know that better education and opportunities for young girls and women can have a powerful impact on fertility rates. Survival was fragile, people died young, and populations stayed small. But humans were smart. Tribal bonds became strong, people learned to cooperate for the common good, and we survived those perilous times. Then, about 50,000 years ago, tool technology began to show rapid improvements. With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.

Enterprise Knowledge’s Urmi Majumder, Principal Data Architecture Consultant, and Fernando Aguilar Islas, Senior Data Science Consultant, presented "Driving Behavioral Change for Information Management through Data-Driven Green Strategy" on March 27, 2024 at Enterprise Data World (EDW) in Orlando, Florida. In this presentation, Urmi and Fernando discussed a case study describing how the information management division in a large supply chain organization drove user behavior change through awareness of the carbon footprint of their duplicated and near-duplicated content, identified via advanced data analytics. Check out their presentation to gain valuable perspectives on utilizing data-driven strategies to influence positive behavioral shifts and support sustainability initiatives within your organization. In this session, participants gained answers to the following questions: - What is a Green Information Management (IM) Strategy, and why should you have one? - How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) support your Green IM Strategy through content deduplication? - How can an organization use insights into their data to influence employee behavior for IM? - How can you reap additional benefits from content reduction that go beyond Green IM?
