Here Comes the Bride
Genesis 24
Allegorical
 Abraham is the Father
 Isaac is the Son
 Eliezer is the Holy Spirit
 Sarah is the Nation of Israel
 Rebekah is the Church (Bride)
 Laban and relatives the old family (World)
7
Let the Allegory begin
Abraham has a task for Eliezer
The Father has a task for the Holy Spirit
Find a bride for my beloved son
8
Holy Spirit’s Job
John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict
the world concerning sin and righteousness and
judgment:
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I
will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of
truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear
witness about me.
9
Who is Rebekah?
The bride of Christ who is the church
Ephesians 5:25–27 Husbands, love your wives, as
Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the
washing of water with the word, so that he might
present the church to himself in splendor, without
spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be
holy and without blemish.
10
Type of bride
2 Corinthians 11:2 For I feel a divine jealousy for
you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to
present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
11
Where does the Bride come from?
Mesopotamia is a type of the world.
The family of Nahor
Old family
They are Gentiles.
Gentiles are to become part of the family
12
The Old Family’s response
Wait 10 days.
10 horns for the kingdom Daniel and Revelation
Matthew 25:1–2 Then the kingdom of heaven will
be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went
to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were
foolish, and five were wise.
13
Bring the bride
home
John 3:29 The one who has the
bride is the bridegroom. The friend
of the bridegroom, who stands and
hears him, rejoices greatly at the
bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this
joy of mine is now complete.
14
What has the beloved son been doing?
John 14:1–3 Let not your hearts be troubled.
Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s
house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I
have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again and will take you to myself, that where I am
you may be also.
15
The Culmination
Let us rejoice and
exult and give him
the glory, for the
marriage of the Lamb
has come, and his
Bride has made
herself ready; it was
granted her to clothe
herself with fine
linen, bright and pure
Revelation 19:6-9 16
Here Comes the Bride
Genesis 24
Our Text
Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And
the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And
Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his
household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put
your hand under my thigh, that I may make you

swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and God of
the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son
from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom
I dwell, but will go to my country and to my kindred,
and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

Good Question
Perhaps the woman may not be
willing to follow me to this land. Must
I then take your son back to the land
from which you came?
Genesis 24:5 (ESV) 21
Reasoned Reply
Don’t take Isaac there
God made a promise
God will be with you
Do your best
Genesis 24:6–8 22
One the road
Ten camels with provisions and gifts
Made it to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor
Distance of about 400 miles
Took 3 to 4 weeks
Stopped and prayed
23
Genesis 24:12–14 (ESV)
12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show
steadfast love to my master Abraham.
13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the
daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
14 Let the young woman to whom
I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your
camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know
that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”

Beautiful Rebeka

25
Shocked by answered prayer
The man gazed at
her in silence to
learn whether the
LORD had
prospered his
journey or not.
Genesis 24:21 26
Time to give God the glory
Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master
Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast
love and his faithfulness toward my master. As
for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the
house of my master’s kinsmen.
Genesis 24:26–27 27
Spread the news
Genesis 24:28–31 (ESV)
28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother’s
household about these things. 29 Rebekah had a brother
whose name was Laban. Laban ran out toward the man, to
the spring. 30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets
on his sister’s arms, and heard the words of Rebekah his
sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man.
And behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
31 He said, “Come in, O blessed of the LORD. Why do you
stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place
for the camels.”
28
Food can wait
I am Abraham’s servant. The LORD has
greatly blessed my master, and he has
become great. He has given him flocks
and herds, silver and gold, male servants
and female servants, camels and donkeys.
Genesis 24:34–35 29
On a mission from God
But he said to me, ‘The LORD, before
whom I have walked, will send his angel
with you and prosper your way. You shall
take a wife for my son from my clan and
from my father’s house.
Genesis 24:40 30
Not Much For Small Talk
Now then, if you are going to show
steadfast love and faithfulness to my
master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I
may turn to the right hand or to the left.”
Genesis 24:49 31
The men of the house speak
The thing has come from the LORD; we
cannot speak to you bad or good. Behold,
Rebekah is before you; take her and go,
and let her be the wife of your master’s
son, as the LORD has spoken.”
Genesis 24:50–51 32
What did he do?
Genesis 24:52–53 (ESV)
52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words,
he bowed himself to the earth before the LORD.
53 And the servant brought out jewelry of silver
and of gold, and garments, and gave them to
Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her
mother costly ornaments.

Almost Home
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field
toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and
saw, and behold, there were camels coming.
Genesis 24:63 35
Hearts Racing
And Rebekah lifted up her
eyes, and when she saw
Isaac, she dismounted from
the camel and said to the
servant, “Who is that man,
walking in the field to meet
us?” The servant said, “It is
my master.” So she took her
veil and covered herself.
Genesis 24:64–65 36
They are married
Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his
mother and took Rebekah, and she became his
wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted
after his mother’s death.
Genesis 24:67 37
Our Take-Away
