A man asked Jesus what good deeds he must do to have eternal life. Jesus said to keep the commandments and love your neighbor. When the man said he had done this, Jesus told him to sell his possessions and follow him. The man went away sad because he was wealthy. Jesus then told his disciples it is hard for a rich man to enter heaven. James discusses the dangers of wealth, including pride, arrogance, and not trusting God. He warns against exploiting workers and hoarding wealth instead of using it to help others.

- 19. James’ Message concerning wealth (1) the Jews considered wealth to be an evidence of God’s acceptance and blessing but they ignored the covenantal responsibilities and warnings. (2) the wealthy Jews were often the very ones who persecuted the early Christians. 19

- I borrowed Madonna’s hit song title for today’s sermon. Here’s part of a music video Material Girl was supposed to be satire of the 80’s materialistic pursuits. Madonna even produced a video that she thought would tip her hand about the message in the song. She was wrong. It became one of her biggest hits! The reason Madonna grew tired of the track, which had arguably always been intended as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the power-obsessed 80s, is that almost everyone took it literally, and the “Material Girl” nickname would follow her around for decades. In 2015, said she never wanted to hear the song again.

- Trust- Jesus or money Pride- It defined him The Jewish people of that day believed that riches were an evidence of God’s blessing. They based this on the promises God gave the Jewish nation at the beginning of their history. It is true that God did promise material blessing if they obeyed, and material loss if they disobeyed.
- Wrong! Money is morally neutral. What you do to obtain it, what you do with it and attitude toward it determine its goodness or evilness.

- it plain that the problem addressed here is man acting independently and not being prepared to submit himself to God’s sovereign will. This problem of independence underlies all sin, for it was the final temptation to which Eve yielded in Eden (Gen 3:5). Eve ate the fruit because she wanted to be like God; she chose to defy God’s edict and so acted independently of Him. Sin, then, is essentially an act of rebellion against God, or expressed differently, an assertion of independence from God Self reliant- Making plans w/o God. Not trusting God.
