College business administration majors, jazz violinist Lisa Tejada and drummer Ruben
Keys became owners and general managers of Club IT after graduating in 2000.
Club IT is a newly remodeled club of 6,000 square feet of fun and energetic space, a
600 square foot dance floor for combinations of creative steps and synergistic movement, and
high ceilings of ambient lighting. Club IT can serve up to 220 seated customers with appetizers
and short order entrees from their kitchen and a bar with four pour stations.
Club Mission and Primary Clientele
Lisa Tejada and Ruben Keys Mission for Club IT as stated within their mission
statement (2011), "We, Ruben and Lisa, offer you live music, DJ's, dance space and refreshments
that suit your lifestyle. You are our friends, and we seek to build a community that meets
regularly at Club IT” (Club IT, About Club IT section, para. 4).
Club IT caters to everyone who listens to Country, Alternative, Rhythm and Blues, HipHop, Latin, Jazz, and Folk music, and those looking to enjoy an entertaining and fun experience.
Club IT’s primary clientele are local bands, independent artists, world DJs, New York City
bands, and San Francisco bands.
Information Technology Resources and Management
Club IT uses intranet resources to assist the staff with organization on food, beverage,
and supply ordering, sales, finances, employee information, and historical data. By using an
information system (IS) to collect, analyze, process, store, and disseminate information for all
club specific purposes. Hardware, software, database, and network all make up the computerbased information system (CBIS) used to support various aspects of club business.
Club IT uses application programs such as the human resources information system
(HRIS) to manage and organize their employee personal data. A transaction processing system

(TPS) supports the clubs collecting, processing, storing, and monitoring sales transactions.
Additionally, collects, monitors, stores, and processes supply orders, food orders, and beverage
orders. The owners and management uses an inferior enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
to operate and manage the club daily.
Using an office automation system (OAS) such as Microsoft office to support managers
and staff with clerical work activities daily. Assisting in developing documents using word
processing and other desktop publishing applications, schedules using electronic calendars, and
communication methods using an e-mail system and voice mail system. Using a functional area
information system (FAIS) to summarize data, prepare reports, and process payroll, and an
expert system to help with credit card approval analysis. Last, using a management information
system to produce customer history, a summarized report consisting of each customer’s sales
transaction data. All these systems currently utilize by Club IT are inferior in comparison to
other organizations such as larger companies (e.g. Space Ibiza, Fabric, and Pacha Ibiza), and can
be dramatically increased to improve business.
Competitive Advantage: Innovation Strategy
According to the book five organizational strategies exist, Introduction to Information
Systems Second Edition, titled Strategies for Competitive Advantage to try and counter Porter’s
five competitive (R. K. Rainer, Jr. and E. Turban, 2009, p. 40-41). These strategies are: Cost
Leadership Strategy, Differentiation Strategy, Innovation Strategy, Operational Effectiveness
Strategy, and Customer-Orientation Strategy.
Innovation Strategy is the strategy of choice worth pursuing for implementation by Club
IT. Being a newly remodeled club with ambient lighting and fun energetic musical sounds to go
with is ideal to introduce new products and services through entertainment. By adding new

features into existing products such as original custom mix drinks and custom food recipes that
only Club IT can authentically produce, rare exported beers and liquors that only Club IT
provides locally, and providing entertaining fashionable services not offered at any of the clubs
within city limits will strategically raise the competitive edge for Club IT within the “night
scene.” These innovative ideas will contribute to reflecting Club IT’s unique identity.
Implementing an original unique floor layout to produce entertainment original only to Club IT
will significantly distinguish Club IT from any club worldwide separating it from all the rest.
Like many innovative products and services throughout history, Club IT’s innovation strategy
will revolutionize the club industry to a new level of entertainment not yet seen in the day or
nightclub scene.
Conclusion
There still exist many information systems that an IT intern can implement during an
intern’s internship to justify the internship. Pursuing and implementing a superior enterprise
resource planning (ERP) system to correct the lack of communication among the functioning
information systems supporting the entire club would be beneficial trumping the current system
being used. Implementing an inter-organizational information system (IOS) that can connect the
club with its suppliers will quicken business transactions efficiently. An electronic commerce
system enabling Club IT to conduct business-to-business (B2B) electronic commerce
transactions with suppliers and business-to-consumer (B2C) electronic commerce transactions
with customers is ideal and promising. A report generator (RPG) application is important and
could serve very useful in every functional area of Club IT. These systems all justify bringing in
an IT intern to assist in upgrading the clubs current information systems, technology, and install
new systems.

By adding new original custom mix drinks and custom food recipes that only Club IT can

providing entertaining fashionable services not offered by any other club within the club’s city
limits is part of the innovation strategy. Acquiring an original unique floor layout to produce
entertainment only Club IT will significantly have will separate Club IT from all existing clubs.
These innovative ideas along with many others will reflect Club IT’s unique identity and allow
Club IT to have a distinguishable reputation to increase their market value in all aspects of their
business.
