In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Different Conventions of a Real Media Product There are many different conventions of a real media product; They are: Advertisement Draws attention to the Music / Song Illustrates the song Appeals to a visual audience Expresses an individual's emotion's Tells us a story Markets an image Promotes the artist / single / album Persuades audience to buy - CD / Download Raises the audiences awareness or profile of the artist group To make an artistic statement in a lifetime Product Placement And lots more…
Advertisment Magazine Advert (when finished) Firstly our media product uses the convention of advertisement. We have created a magazine advert that will promote our product to the general public. However due to a non-existent budget we were unable to promote our music video in any other form of advertisement. This is a disadvantage to us as many real media product would have the money and marketing team to advertise in a number of ways, Such as: buses, bus stops, t.v, internet, radio, etc.
Lip Synching Many real media products use lip synching, and as this is considered to be a key convention for music videos we also used some lip synching. The majority of the lip synching in our music video is done by Arif. However there are two lines of the chorus at the end of the song where we used the other two band members, Lewis and Sheik to also lip synch.
Bands and Instruments Just like lip synching, many real media products also use the traditional convention of including a band or instruments. In our music video we have a band scene and a guitar solo scene. We also developed on the guitar solo scene by adding different effects to make it as unique and memorable as possible. A traditional guitar solo would just be the guitarist stepping a few steps towards the front of the band. However our guitar solo that we included was the guitarist on stage on his own with different lighting and background effects. The guitar solo that we used in our music video is shown in the YouTube clip in the bottom right form 2:00 to 2:30.
Settings Another convention of a real media product that we used was to use lots of different settings. We had shots in the snow, shots in a class room, shots on a street, shots on a field, shots in a drama room, and other settings. By using all of these different locations to film in it shows to the audience how active the band members are and it helps the pass of the song.
Settings - Continued Here are some more screenshot of the different setting we shot our music video in.
Expresses an individual's emotion's Another convention of a real media product that we used was expressing an individual's emotion. In many real media products they use this convention. An example off the top of my head is Jason Derulo, What If, (link to youtube video). This whole song and video is about what he could have done differently. In our music video we uses a lot of shots to express Arif’s emotions, in particular about school. Throughout the video we see him causing mischief, sliding across school tables, tying someone's shoelace to the table, breaking into the music room, doing flips on school grounds and bulling other kids. He is trying to make school a more fun place. One of the first shots we see our video is the shot of all the school kids sitting in the classroom really bored. So throughout our video we try and get him to express a more exciting emotions. However we then have a final shot of snow falling down on him, this shows, ‘what goes around comes around’. This is a screen shot of the school kids bored in the class This is a screen shot of the snow pouring down on Arif
