OBSERVATION
CHAPTER ONE
Chapter one shows the indicators generated and the summary of all the tables in the publication. Table 1.1 shows key Indicators for
the year 2017 and 2018. The table also includes some ratios such as health facility population ratio, doctors /patient facility ratio, nurses and
midwives ratio etc. See chapter one for more illustration and understanding.
CHAPTER TWO
NUMBER AND TYPES OF HEALTH FACILITIES IN EKITI STATE AS AT 2018
Chapter two examines the number and types of medical and health facilities available in Ekiti State as at 2018. From the record made
available by the State Ministry of Health as contained in table 2.1, the State had a total of 364 government health facilities as at 2018,
comprising of two (2) tertiary, 3 specialist hospitals with one each in the senatorial districts, 18 general hospitals with at least one in each local
government of Ekiti State and government house clinic. Other health facilities were distributed across every local government of the State. The
State equally had 238 registered private hospitals. See fig 1 for further details
Table 2.2 shows that Ado local government had the highest number of health facilities being 146 (both government and private), this is in
tandem with the fact that Ado had largest population in the State. Ijero and Ekiti West had the second largest 39 (6.48%) both of government
and private health facilities. Ilejemeje had the least number of health facility of 16 and percentage of 2.66%.See fig 2 for more information.
In terms of Constituency and Senatorial distribution of the public health facilities for the year 2018 table 2.3 reveals that Ekiti Central,
comprising of Ado, Irepodun/Ifelodun, Efon, Ekiti West and Ijero had a total of 135 (37.09%) government health facilities, Ekiti North that
makes up of Ikole , Oye, Ido/Osi Ilejemeje and Moba local governments had a total of 106 (29.12%) of the health facilities .Also from the
same table, the number of health facilities being 123 (33.79%)were located in Ekiti South senatorial district comprising of Ekiti South West,
Ikere, Ise/Orun, Ekiti East, Emure and Gbonyin Local Governments in 2018 .Figure 3 and 4 gives further illustration of the distribution on
constituency and senatorial district basis.
11. xi
Table 2.4 gives details of registered number of private and approved patient medicine stores in the State by local government for the
year 2017 and 2018. The table shows that Ado local government had 28 registered private pharmaceutical shops and 227 approved medicine
stores as at 2017 which increased to 42 and 246 respectively in 2018. From the analysis table 2.5, it could be seen that some local governments
did not have registered pharmaceutical shops, yet all had approved patent medicine stores. Apart from Ado the State capital, local
governments like Gbonyin Ekiti South West and Ikere had 29, 29, and 27 approved patent stores respectively in 2017. However, there was a
sharp increment in the number of pharmaceutical shops in Gbonyin within a space of one year i.e. the number increased from 29 to 40 which
accounted for 37.9% increment Irepodun/Ifelodun did not have any registered pharmaceutical shop in 2017 meanwhile its approved number
of patent store also increased from 19 in 2017 to 33 in the following year.
The number of beds in the health facilities being a vital aspect of health statistics was also captured for the year 2017 and 2018.
According to table 2.5, a total of 2,984 beds that were in good condition were available in all the public health facilities in the State in 2017 but
the number dropped 2944 in 2018

CHAPTER THREE
HEALTH HUMAN RESOURCE
The publication also covers information on human resources being a major aspect in the health sector. From table 3.1, it was observed that health
personnel in government owned facilities were captured according to their cadres ranging from consultants, medical doctors, dental surgeons,
pharmacists, nurses/midwives etc. The table also speak about non-health workers like account staff, typists, messengers and others.
The data was also classified according to the type of health facilities where the officer’s functions being primary health facility (PHC), secondary
health facility/hospital management board (SHC/HMB), Ekiti State teaching hospital (THF) and State ministry of health. In all, the table revealed
that the State had 19 medical consultants, 133 medical doctors, and 20 dental surgeons
The table also show that there were 983 nurses/midwives in which female category takes higher percentage of 86% while that of male is just 14%. See
further details in table 3.1 and figure 5.
Table 3.2 shows the distribution of the available consultants in the 4 local governments where tertiary and specialist hospitals were found. Ado local
government where Ekiti State teaching hospital is located had the highest number of 7 consultants in 2017 as well 7 consultants in Ikere local
government for the two years.
Record of medical doctors who were viewed as being highly essential and in fact life wire in health administration and health care service were
captured in table 3.3.From the record, it was observed that out of 133 medical doctors that were in place in 2017 male were 107 while the remaining
26 were females. Also, secondary health facilities has the highest number of medical doctors of 92 (69.17%) followed by the number of doctors in
tertiary health facilities being (16.54%) and primary health has the least figure of 13 with percentage of 9.77% and Ministry has 4.51 in the year 2018.
Also is very important to note that the state had 20 dental surgeons distributed across the state health facilities.
Table 3.5 and 3.6 presents analysis of the Distribution of Nurses/Midwives by gender and local governments Ekiti East had the least figure of number
of nurses/midwives both in 2017 and 2018 while Oye local government had the second highest figure of 75 (6.87%) in the two years. Meanwhile, the
number of nurses/midwives who were female in 2017 was 843 (86.55%) the number which increased slightly to 848 (86.26%) in 2018.
Other major personnel considered here were pharmacists, community health officers and record officers. Reference to table 3.7 and 3.8 contained the
comparative analysis of some key health personnel by gender and by local governments. Area covered by the table includes consultants, doctors,

CHAPTER FOUR
HOSPITAL ACTIVITES
Chapter four examined activities carried out in the public health facilities in Ekiti State for years 2017 and 2018. The activities include In-patients and
Out-patients attended to, services rendered, discharges and deaths among others. All the information were also disaggregated by gender, facility and
local government.
Table 4.1 shows the distribution of out-patients attended to in the public health facilities by gender and type of facility in the year 2017. It could be
seen that, primary health facility had the highest percentage of out- patients being 130,033 out of total figure of 246,208 while secondary and tertiary
facilities accounted for (25.5%) and (21.7%) respectively in the year. In terms of gender distribution, 58% of the total out-patients were females while
the remaining 42% were males. Table 4.2 figure out-patients in primary, and secondary and tertiary health facilities totalling 102,440 which allocated
for 45.24% followed by Ikole with 7.24%. But Ise/Orun had the least percentage of 2.07% out of the total 226,435 out-patients in 2018.
The record of in-patient in government health facilities for the year 2017 was reflected in table 4.3. It reveals that the figures of in-patients that visited
primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities respectively were 14.9%, 40.5% and 44.6% of 225,53 being the total in-patients in the year. It was also
observed that the figure female of patients almost doubled that of male patients.
Considering table 4.4, Ado local government had the highest number of in-patients being 11, 554 (51.64%), this was followed Ikole (8.26%) and Ikere
(7.41%), Ilejemeje had the least being (0.60%).
Table 4.5 shows data on discharges of patients in public health facilities in both 2017 and 2018, It shows that out of total patients figure for (20,198)
discharged in 2017, (68.37%) were females and the remaining 31.62% were male but for 2018 female accounted for 91.62% and figure for male was
just (8.38%). This could be as a result of the fact that female patients were more than male patients in the facilities during the period. Going by the
type of facility, tertiary health facility had the highest percentage (86.13%) while secondary and primary had 3.28% and 10.59% in 2018. Going
through tables 4.6 which reflected on the number of discharges by type of facilities, one could observed that Tertiary facilities had the highest figure
14. BUREAU OF STATISTICS 14
9126, which accounted for (46.53%) followed closely by secondary (41.83%) and the least figure in primary that had (11.64%) in 2017. The percentage
of discharges in primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities in 2018 were given in table 4.7 thus, 15.17%, 39.03% and 45.80% respectively.
In respect of deaths recorded in the health facilities, table 4.8 reveals a total of 572 deaths in 2017 out of which number of deaths of males were 322
with percentage of 56.29% while the female counterpart was 43.71% and the figure for 2018 was 482 deaths recorded. Table 4.9 and 4.10 gives the
figures of recorded deaths in facilities in Ekiti State with tertiary facility having the highest figure of 328 (57.3%) and the least figure of 11 (1.9%)
recorded in primary health facilities in 2017. However, there was a sharp reduction in the figure in 2018, from 572 in 2017 to 482 in 2018 which
amounted to 15.7% reduction in the figure. Meanwhile, tables 4.11 and 4.12 summarise various activities in the hospital for the years under
consideration and their pictorial charts are also presented in fig 7 for further details.
Table 4.13 presents information about eye care services rendered in Ekiti State where a total of 929 patients were attended to in the tertiary facility in
the year 2017 with female taking higher percentages of 58.45. The same services were rendered in secondary health facility where 72 males and 100
females were treated for various eye problems, Record shows that 399 (40.80%) male out of 978 and 579 (59.20%) are female. Table 4.15 and 4.16
show more details.
