INTRODUCTION
 A baggage handling system (BHS) is a type of conveyor system
installed in airports that transports checked luggage from ticket
counters to areas where the bags can be loaded onto
airplanes.
 A BHS also transports checked baggage coming from airplanes
to baggage claims or to an area where the bag can be
loaded onto another airplane.

FUNCTIONS
BHS perform the
following functions:
5
•Detection of bag jams
•Volume regulation (to ensure that input points are
controlled to avoid overloading system.
•Load balancing (to evenly distribute bag volume
between conveyor sub-systems)
•Bag counting
•Bag tracking
•Redirection of bags via pusher or diverter
FORMS
6
Destination-coded vehicles (DCVs), unmanned carts propelled by
linear induction motors mounted to the tracks, can load and
unload bags without stopping.
Automatic scanners scan the labels on the luggage.
Conveyors equipped with junctions and sorting machines
automatically route the bags to the gate.
A reliable, trouble-free way to realize a reduction of up to 30% in
labour costs
MAIN JOB
A baggage-handling
system has
three main jobs:
7
•Move bags from the check-in area to the
departure gate
•Move bags from one gate to another during
transfers
•Move bags from the arrival gate to the
baggage-claim area

PROCESSES
8
Between check-in (CI) and baggage make-up (MU), there are four
different basic processes, that is
 Early Bag Storage (EBS)
 Identification
 Sortation
 Hold Baggage Screening (HBS).
9
10
Arrange trolleys according to the flights load.
Check security sticker of the baggage and
segregated as per the destination.
The bag is sent through an X-Ray
Check the types of baggage(i.e. hardcase,
soft baggage, fragile baggage etc.) and then
align.
Reconcile baggage and load in trolley.
Dispatch baggage to aircraft for loading.
Inform RAMP staff about trolley count,
baggage count and baggage weight.
At Level 3 a more detailed picture is
taken with a CT-scanner
The X-Ray picture previously taken is
analysed by a trained human operator.
It may be that the bag is directed to
another Xray machine, where it is again
examined. If the bag is not cleared at
this stage, it is sent to the level three
screening.
machine and the picture
is automatically scanned. If the bag is
not cleared, it is sent to the level two
screening
In case the bag is rejected, an operator will
examine the picture in the level four
screening . If the bag is still suspectable, it is
sent to the last level of screening where the
bag is removed from the system and
manually investigated in the presence of its
owner.
